Molto bello questo brano classico...e Joan Sutherland è superlativa nella sua splendida esecuzione . Un caldo grazie a Lhoengrin O ...sempre attento nelle scelte da presentare ...Elsa Asta.
if you compare with Arleen's... Arleen stops to hit the high note, she breaks the line... Joan incorporates the high notes in the vocal line as if they are nothing... this is true legato (which later Sutherland did not produce that flawlessly for vocal health reasons)
Lohengrin O Sutherland’s baroque had great taste... Unfortunately her later work had some horrible taste... her and Boynage completely destroyed Di Tale Amor
Sutherland was ultimate Alcina. Technically it is super recording and I love this version. But dramatically I prefer her recording from Venice 1960. It is available in YT but unfortunatelly in bad quality.
Who conducted this performance? It’s interesting how when she calls on the spirits to come to her aid (2:20 to 3:00), there’s no music. As if really alone; the voice shines dramatically with thrust and power. She brings these baroque pieces to life, instead of the modern approach to this music and the “historically informed” performances that imo tend to kill the drama.
On one level of course, this is incredible. And live is staggering. I know it's been said before with Sutherland, but as a mad scene, I just never hear a character behind the gleaming notes. There isn't a living breathing human trying to contend with their suffering and the perils of world. It's far too elegant, prim, and aiming either at prettiness or display. We should be glimpsing into the human soul...
Great moments of opera the same feeling I get from her Lucia or from Price's Aida... Great singing but I don't sense anything. Unlike with Callas where the singing may not always have been velvety but I sure made you understand and feel every single word 💓
