Thanks for the expository explanation. I have a QU 24 and I have been self learning all of the set up and this webinar has made my understand of the QU 24 Mixer more robust.
Seasons Greetings, Merry Christmas, Happy, Healthy, Safe New Year 2021..!! Salutations de saisons, joyeux Noël, bonne année 2021 en bonne santé et en toute sécurité .. !! 😊🎄🎁✨
I've been told you can pair up the channels to make 16 stereos as well as 32 mono. I'm asking cause I'm using it as an all-in-one mixer, for my synths, workstations and samplers, and drum machines.. Yes, some of my analog is mono that fine.. But I own a lot of stereo with cool fx. my current Daw is Flstudio Controller/mixer/processor
Hello. Just bought a Qu-32 and we are having troubles integrating it with our DAW Propellerhead Reason 9. The Mackie protocol goes fine until 16 chanels ( 2 groups ), but when we try to implement the 3rd and 4th group, the banks become linked together. The faders and strip buttons from the 3rd and 4th group also trigger the corresponding ones int the 1st and 2nd. Is there anything we a missing? Kind regards Anze
Hi Anze, we have not tested Qu-32 with Reason, so this is something we would have to look into. It would probably be best if you could send us an email to support@allen-heath.com and we will be able to assist you more easily. Thanks. Harry.
This is a very succinct presentation on the QU! Amazing! Quick question about the outputs. I'm running a QU32, and for the life of me I can't figure out the outputs assignment. For example I understand that output 1-2 is the LR on the mixer. What output pairs correspond to the outputs on the mixer? Like which output corresponds to Mix 9-10? Or am I looking at it wrong? Thanks a bunch!
Hello Sam, The physical output sockets of the mixer are fixed and you can find to which mix are assigned by following the order. Outputs sockets 1 and 2 are Matrix 1. L&R are output sockets 11 and 12. Mix 1, 2, 3 and 4 are mono and mix 5, 6 and 7 are stereo so they will require 2 output sockets each. These are all labelled at the back of the mixer. Rafael
Great tutorial, clear as pure water. One point that I have noticed using the QU16 for the studio is that the levels are quite low, I have to turn the gain full to get a decent recording level on Pro Tools, is this ok or I am missing something? Regards.
Hi 100dB - Glad you found it helpful! What you are seeing with level here is the difference between dBu and dBFS (more info here - support.allen-heath.com/Knowledgebase/Article/View/1121). The USB streaming is directly from the core, so there is a large headroom there that avoids any clipping, it's also worth noting you are still getting all the available information (by boosting this level pre-stream you would get a louder signal in the DAW but no extra data). It's easy to normalise signals in post, and you could also trim the direct output up by +10dB in the routing (but again, you wouldn't be getting extra information, just a bigger waveform!). Thanks, Keith.
Hello Nikhil, Any DAW will work fine with the mixer. No driver is required if you're using a Mac computer. However, you must install the drivers if you are using windows, they can be downloaded from our website: www.allen-heath.com/qu-series/qu-16#software Kindly have a look at the following article for your reference: support.allen-heath.com/hc/en-gb/articles/4403019846033-Qu-How-do-I-route-audio-to-and-from-my-Qu-mixer-and-a-DAW- Thanks, Rafael
Thank's very much for the webinar. Is it possible to map the eq dedicated encoders in the mixer, to the eq parameters in the DAW? thoes they follow the selected track in the DAW? (pan,... as well) Thanks!
Hi Josep, Unfortunately, it is not possible to use the channel strip controls for DAW control, as these are still controlling the select audio channel. The MIDI fader strip selection is independent to the mixer channel selection. Thanks! Alex
Hi Maiorta, there are currently no plans for support of Qu apps on Windows devices, but I will log your request for consideration in future. Thanks. Harry.
Thanks Harry. Those apps are a critical part of the Qu ecosystem that us, Windows users, are simply missing out on. Hopefully Allen and Heath can take advantage of developer tools like the Windows Bridge for iOS to port their strong app code from iOS to Windows: developer.microsoft.com/en-us/windows/bridges/ios
"Currently no plans"? Haha, well.. you've just alienated half your audio clientele. The X32 and M32 are better products anyway, and they can be used with windows and mac. Hell, even presonus is on board with windows now too. Plus, presonus finally decided to join the rest of the world, and use motorized faders. Watch while Allen and Heath just fade away.
I am using Mix 1 for my in ear monitoring system that is capable of stereo output. Can the QU send stereo mix to my in ear and can I Pan my instrument output to my in ear monitor using one (1) XLR? Thanks
Hi Gari, It is not possible to send a stereo signal out of the Mix 1 socket on Qu. However, if your IEM system supports AES input, you could use the AES output assigned to a stereo mix bus. Alternatively, you could use a Stereo Mix output which would use two XLR cables for left and right. This will then allow panning independently to the LR mix. Thanks! Alex
Is there a fairly simple way to route the logic click track to the headphone out on the mixer? I'm tracking our rehearsal and don't want it coming thru the mains. Thanks. Great video!
Hi Randal, In Logic, you can view the click track in the mixer view by showing all tracks. You can then send this channel to a specific USB return for the Qu and the click can have its own channel on the mixer. For example, if you assigned the click in Logic to USB output 3, this will place the click on CH3 on the Qu. If you'd like further assistance setting this up, please go to support.allen-heath.com to start ticket. Thanks! Alex
@@AllenandHeathUK In the mixer, can I set up a mix for the headphones? I'll need the click channel and some of the others. Thanks. I love the mixer so far. I have that and a Soundcraft UI24R, after a little while, I'll keep the winner and sell the loser. ;)
I'm trying to use my QU16 with my MPC LIVE on firmware 2.10. I keep getting an error on my MPC : "ERROR: 44100 may not be a supported sample rate on the external device Code -22" Is there a way to change my sample rate in QU-16, or would this be an MPC LIVE setting I should change? thank you!
Hi Tera, The 48kHz sample rate of the Qu-16 is fixed and can't be changed. If this is a setting you can change on the MPC, then try changing it to 48kHz and see if that solves the problem. Go to support.allen-heath.com for further assistance with the Qu. Thanks! Alex
Hi Richard, The Qu USB B interface is supported on the latest MacOS. The A&H MIDI Control Driver is currently supported on Big Sur, but we're not anticipating a new version of the driver to be required to enable support for the latest MacOS. Thanks! Alex
This board is a no-starter for me unless/until Windows is supported. I do like the features, but StudioLive 32 is a direct competitor as far as I can see... and they are more Windows friendly.
Hi, THX for the good webinar! I still have 3 questions about the q-16 in DAW-environment: 1.) Does MIDI over TCP-IP provide any advantages compared to USB? Maybe regarding speed or precision? 2.) Is there a way to make the faders of the mixer also control Aux-Send-levels in my Pro Tools Session (i.e. Reverb-Sends)? 3.) At my work (theatre) we have tried to send CC-commands from a DAW to control the Live-Fader-movements (not custom layer), but I assume that's not supposed to work with this console? Is it possible that this function could be implemented in a firmware-upgrade? Kindest regards, Markus OSX 10.10.5 PT 12.5.2
Hi Markus, There are other variables that can affect speed or precision, so my advice on which to use would be whichever is most convenient! Of course for longer cable runs, you would need to use CAT5e. The other two questions relate to the complete MIDI Protocol for the Qu series (www.allen-heath.com/media/Qu_MIDI_Protocol_V1.9.pdf). The DAW Control Driver translates these 'RAW' messages to controller messages, but you can use them directly too. If you need further info on this, just submit a ticket at support.allen-heath.com. Cheers! Keith.
Hi Aron, Yes, it is indeed possible! The USB sends can be configured on the Setup > IO Patch > USB Audio page on your Qu and any mix can be assigned to one of the sends. For example, if you assign Mix 1 to USB 1 on this page, selecting USB 1 in your software will be sourcing its signal from Mix 1. Thanks! Alex
@@AllenandHeathUK thanks Alex, incredibly helpful. May I ask if there's an easy way of selecting USB 1 on a mac?? Where would I select it, for example if I'm using obs for streaming
Hi Aron, OBS will take the first two USB sends when you select the Qu as an audio device. So anything you assigned to USB 1 & 2 on the Setup > IO Patch > USB Audio page will be routed to OBS. Thanks! Alex
I require from a interface unit to put my live songs recorded in a flash stick, mixed with my Qu-24 to be mastered in stereo with a Pro Tools/First in my iMac?
Hi Lixo, This sounds perfectly do-able! If you would like some assistance in getting it up and running please send us a ticket through our support system on our website. Here's the link --> support.allen-heath.com/ Kind Regards Alex
THANKS FOR THIS GREAT VIDEO, JUST E QUESTION: how can i connect an external outboard processor on QU-16? i'm trying to connect that on different channels, but don't works... Please can you explain me if you know something?
Hi Aleks, Please see our knowledgebase article on this here: support.allen-heath.com/Knowledgebase/Article/View/1167/201/qu--outboard-gear Thanks! Alex
Has Anyone had any trouble with the QU24 and Cubase 10.5 ? It's running very unstable and has become unusable.. I've tried everything recommended by customer service and now they tell me that the mixer may be broken and needs repair.. Worked fine before I updated Cubase... Any ideas? Thank you! Do they even make new parts for these units?
Hi Nicholas, I'm sorry to hear you're having trouble. Have you started a ticket at support.allen-heath.com already? If not, please do this so that we can help work out why this is happening. Thanks! Alex
Hi Evan, The Qu-SB can indeed be used for both DAW Control and USB audio streaming, exactly in the same way as our Qu-32 console as it uses the Qu-32 core. This means, with the addition of a remote stagebox, you can stream up to 32 input channels to your DAW via the USB B interface. Thanks! Alex
@@AllenandHeathUK thanks so much. I'm about to buy one of these. 👍 I want to do portable tracking on the go, but also wanted the flexibility to leave in a project studio.
Hello, I just bought the qu32 and I set up everything with my daw but no sound comes out of the speaker either the main speakers or the alt speaker So please if you can help me please if there is any set up missing Thanks
HI Aly, check out the KB article below regarding routing audio to and from your DAW. support.allen-heath.com/Knowledgebase/Article/View/1142/201/how-do-i-route-audio-to-and-from-my-qu-mixer-and-the-daw If you still have issues drop me an email to support@allen-heath.com Mike.
Thank you so much for this webinar it really helped me out a lot. Were you ever able to create more webinars because I am trying to run the QU 32 on a iMac and my DAW is studio one professional. I don’t necessarily know the inns and outs to make that work.
Hi N-FINITY, Glad you found it helpful! We will indeed look at creating some more studio focused webinars in future, which would include updated DAW's and perhaps some others we haven't covered before :) Thanks! Keith.
Hi , I need some help ,I've downloaded the latest Qu driver for windows and followed your instructions very carefully, connected my qu16 to pro tools , running windows 10 and as soon as I click ''QU ASIO Driver'' in the play back engine box my buffer size window disappears and I keep getting a message saying, ''the current play back engine does not support a sample rate of 44.1 kHz'' plus another pop up saying, ''your audio device is configured with an unsupported buffer size'' Any help would be greatly appreciated to get me up and running.
Hi! This pop-up will only appear in Pro Tools if the project sample rate doesn't match the sample rate of the playback engine. As the Qu USB B interface uses 48kHz sample rate, the project must be set to this in Pro Tools first. You should then be able to select the Qu as the playback engine. If you need further assistance, please go support.allen-heath.com to contact our support department directly. Thanks! Alex
Hi! You can indeed do this! There is a USB B interface on the back of the Qu which can stream up to 32 sends and 32 returns to a computer (this varies slightly depending on what model you go for). This doesn't impact the normal operation of the mixer so you can simultaneously use it in a live sound environment too! Thanks! Alex
Hello! We already have a few on youtube plus some others from our users, here are some: ru-vid.com/video/%D0%B2%D0%B8%D0%B4%D0%B5%D0%BE-UcaSKkFJ94g.html ru-vid.com/video/%D0%B2%D0%B8%D0%B4%D0%B5%D0%BE-s_zYfI0CV48.html ru-vid.com/video/%D0%B2%D0%B8%D0%B4%D0%B5%D0%BE-yC7kyENOM-o.html You can also follow the MIDI Control guide and the MIDI Protocol for QU: www.allen-heath.com/media/AH-MIDI-Control-V2.00-Help.pdf#page=5 www.allen-heath.com/media/Qu_MIDI_Protocol_V1.9.pdf Thank you, Rafael
Hi Dimuthu, The Qu USB B Interface works with any software that supports ASIO or WDM devices, and this means it works with most DAWs. I have tested the Qu with Ableton Live specifically and it works well. Thanks! Alex
Hi Fdcg94, You can indeed! The best way to do this is in MIDI Environment under the Clicks and Ports page. For DAW Control, you would use this page to send DAW Control ports 1-4 to the Monitor object. For your keyboard, this should also be displayed as a separate port which you can send to the Input Notes. I hope this helps! Thanks, Alex
Hi Tharif, If you're having trouble getting the Qu set up with Cubase, please go to support.allen-heath.com to start a support ticket and we can go through the set up with you. Thanks! Alex
Hi Steve, connect the mixer to the PC with a USB A-B cable, then install the Qu Windows ASIO/WDM driver from the Qu software downloads here: www.allen-heath.com/key-series/qu-series/#tab5 You then need to select the Qu ASIO/WDM driver for playback and recording in the audio software you are using. For info about routing audio to and from your software check out the knowledgebase article we have here: support.allen-heath.com/Knowledgebase/Article/View/1142/0/how-do-i-route-audio-to-and-from-my-qu-mixer-and-the-daw Hope this helps. Thanks. Harry.
Hi Mr.Carter, Are you using the DAW control to send messages to and from Live? The setup notes are available here : www.allen-heath.com/media/DAW-Control-Setup-Notes-V1.40.pdf Hope this helps! Keith.
Hi! The Qu-32 USB B interface is compatible with most DAWs. For control, as long as the DAW supports the Mackie/HUI protocols, DAW control should work fine. If you have any trouble configure the Qu, please go to support.allen-heath.com for assistance. Thanks! Alex
This video would be great if not for the person talking smacking their lips or clearing the food from their teeth every couple seconds. At 1:00 he only gets out 2 words, um and so, in between 2 smacks. 😳😳😳 I just ordered the QU-32 and really looked forward to this video, but had to shut it off after less than 2 minutes as the sound drove me nuts. This is a video about "sound" after all. There must be a more professional speaker Allen & Heath has on staff that can do these videos.
Hi Kevin, maybe your headphones/monitors are quite sharp in the high frequencies.. ? Even if not, here a little tip: just use a system-EQ next time! ;)
Hey I use a QU-16 for my home recording studio. I really like the intergration of being able to use it as a control surface for pro tools as well as for tracking of vocals and the on board eq, compression, But I have some external hardware compressors that I like to add to my signal chain but I have attempted to do this and I have not been able to do so yet. Please if you could help me understand how to achieve this?
Hi Base Note, Sure! You can use one of your mix outputs to send a USB return from Pro Tools to a compressor, then return the compressed signal either on a mono line input, or one of the stereo inputs. Finally, this can then be routed back into Pro Tools via the USB stream. Hopefully this helps, but if you'd like a more detailed walk through, please email support@allen-heath.com and I'll list the steps for you. Cheers, Keith.
Hi there, there isn't the option to connect an X-Touch directly to the Qu. The motorised faders on the Qu are fantastic and work very well in conjunction with most DAWs. Best regards, Aiden
Hi JDPRO, Number of channels available on ASIO is different for the different models. So; Qu-16 is 24x22, Qu-24 is 32x30 and Qu-32/Qu-Pac/Qu-SB are all 32x32 (they all use the same Qu-32 core!) Cheers, Keith.
