Thank you again for yet another excellent video on the Qu series. I'm new to digital mixers and and the concept of using matrices. It's my understanding that among the many uses for a matrix there are creating separate mixes of channels for front fills and subwoofers. In other words, you may not need or want to include all the same sources (instruments) in the front fills or the subwoofers as you have in your master mix feeding your main left and right speakers. And this is apparently something that a matrix can do. I have the A&H Qu-16 which, as you mentioned, does not have the matrix feature though. Can you use the mix masters (Mix1-10) to accomplish the same thing? Any tips on doing that? Thanks.
@soundadvicewithrob3083
@soundadvicewithrob3083 Год назад
Thx. Glad you found it helpful. To be clear you can only assign outputs to a matrix so there is no ability create a different mix using a matrix. That’s what an aux/mix is for - creating “separate mixes of channels”. Now if you decide you still want just an exact copy of an output (the intention of a matrix) then yes you can simulate it on a qu16. On the mix you choose set all faders to unity including the master. Then set all channels in that mix to postfader. That mix will now follow and be a copy of your LR. It’s as close as you can get to a matrix on a qu16

The major challenge with this equipment is the ability to connect and assign the “Mix” outputs to about 6 (six) speakers connected to the back of QU-32 mixer. Currently l was able to hear sound via the R/L - Main outputs but not via the Mix Output ports numbered #1 through #10. I followed pages 39 and 40 of the instruction manual, still there was no sound outputs from the 6 (six) speakers connected to the mix outputs #1 through #10. I am sure that l am doing something wrong. Does anyone has a RU-vid Tutorial link on this subject matter or any other video tutorial on how to apportion multiple speakers to the 10 (ten) mix outputs ports of the QU-32? Any assistance would be appreciated. Thank you.

@soundadvicewithrob3083

The closest you could get would be to set the mix to post-fader. Reducing any LR channel would then be reduced in that mix. Matrix (also set to postfade) are the only other way to have a second output that directly follows LR

Hey Rob! I had a weird question… i’m trying to see if there’s a way our church’s livestream could sound wider; giving the sense that the mix is stereo even though it’s technically mono. I had two thoughts - but one of the ideas would require more work. I’m currently using Mix 5-6 for the livestream, and piping it to Matrix 1-2. I did it this way because, since I do not have an available separate mixer to EQ the channels, I decided that Matrix 1-2 would allow me to have some type of shaping by using PEQ and Compression. Since everything coming into the Matrix is technically a Mono signal, panning at the Channel level, only helps to choose where I would like to place the sound, not really give it any depth or spacial sound. Sooo…. Here are my thoughts.. Should I run Mix 5-6 to Matrix 1-2 AND 3-4, so that I can pan hard left and right? Then I would use Matrix 1 & 4 as my stereo mix for the livestream. OOOORRRR… the harder route.. Use Mix 5-6 & 7-8 then pan 5-6 Left, and 7-8 right. That way I can use Matrix 1-2 as a Stereo channel for my mix? I know this method would require a lot more work in balancing the audio, but it also might give me more depth and separation to create a wider sound… I just wish Matrix 1-2 were two separate faders, and had the ability to hard pan 1 to Left and 2 to Right.
@soundadvicewithrob3083
@soundadvicewithrob3083 2 года назад
Hi there...some interesting ideas for sure. Both sound valid in concept its just a matter of finding out if you get "enough" of the result youre looking for based the work required (certainly with your second option). Here's the first thing I'd try... are you using ambient /room mics? Assuming that you are, I would start by changing their location to be as opposite as possible in your space. Put one close up front and one as far back as possible. If one is far right put the other far left. Then start playing with the mix of those two locations. You might be surprised. Next, reverse their locations. You might find the one closest to the drummer needs to be on the opposite side etc. Let me know
@kainoaliu
@kainoaliu 2 года назад
Thanks, Rob! There was a point that I was using a single shotgun mic towards the back of the room, but at the time I didn’t think about proper placement or distance. I’ll get two mics setup this time, and try different setups and see which one would yield the best results. Still in the trial and error stage, so I’ll see what happens.
@kainoaliu
@kainoaliu 2 года назад
Hey Rob! So I took your advice on setting up crowd mics, and what a difference it has made. It’s not exactly where I want it just yet, but it’s a start! Currently, I have Mix 5-6 going to Matrix 1-2. I did it this way so I could have a little more EQ control over the mix, since I don’t have much channel EQ control because I share the board with our in-house L-R Mix. I then go from Matrix 1-2 to my Zoom F6, which connects to my iPad for Switcher Studio. I’m too far away from the board to use the USB out feature, so XLR works best at the moment. On the Zoom F6, I have one input panned hard left, and the other panned hard right (I’m thinking of changing this to 3/4 pans instead). So…. here are my thoughts.. To get the directional and width I am looking for, it sounded like I may need to separate the vocals and instruments into two different mixes. Soo, I’m going to try using Mix 7-8 for the purpose of width of sound, then use Mix 5-6 for more directional. Hoping this will help bring more separation and width.

Is it possible to use the matrixes as regular aux out if you run out of outputs
@soundadvicewithrob3083
@soundadvicewithrob3083 2 года назад
Great question. Yes and No, due to the differences. An Aux output is an independent layer where all of the channels can be mixed for a custom output. A Matrix is simply a copy of the assigned output. You do have some processing (eq etc) but there is no way to mix individual channels when using a matrix. That being said if all you want is a copy of an existing output as an “extra” output then go ahead and use a matrix.

Unfortunately there is technically no way to seperate the stereo mixes into mon channels. There is however a workaround. Using the PAN knob you can choose to push each channel within a mix to full left or full right. For instance, Select Mix5-6 then choose any channel that is part of the Mix. Setting the PAN to full left will make that channel appear in Mix5 only and pushing PAN to full right will make that channel appear in only Mix6. This as close as you will get using the QU series

@@soundadvicewithrob3083 But a matrix, by your own description, can be a mix of mixes. A good use case for live streaming might be where you want to include the sounds of big ambient instruments, which you mightn't want fed back through the house speakers. On our old ZED-428 we had such a condenser mic on its own group. Then we could dial up the gain as required and not risk feedback howl.

Can I use the Matrix for Subs
@soundadvicewithrob3083
@soundadvicewithrob3083 Год назад
Great question. Technically you *could* use a matrix for subs depending on what output(s) you route to that matrix. It would be a bit of a waste to route LR to a matrix for subs because you would need to EQ all of the signal out of that signal above what the subs are intended to handle. You would be better to route a dedicated Aux/Mix output to subs and only send the instrumentation that is best for subs (kick, bass gtr, low synth pads etc)

Yamaha DM3 or QU16 best for small band
@soundadvicewithrob3083
@soundadvicewithrob3083 Год назад
Wow great question but with lots of variables to be considered. First the question is like asking Mac or PC…. Or Ford vs Chevy. Personally I’m and A&H guy and have been for many years. It where I’m comfortable and typically my first choice. Second there are lots of pros and cons for both of these boards, so it really depends on your needs, and how you like to work. Last, its almost not a fair question because we’re not really comparing apples to apples. The DM3 is brand new this year (or past year) while the QU16 is now more than 10yrs old. Technology changes fast in this business, however the QU is still a very capable piece of gear and I still use them regularly. Sorry I can’t give you a simple answer to this one. I suggest you rent them both and find out which works better for you. Have fun!

@@soundadvicewithrob3083 i think its routing but not sure. Basically wireless shure mics where connected to two channels, suddenly yesterday to today started the Qu 32 and those two channels changed for some reason to PC L and PC R being both channels linked together

Sounds like you may recalled a scene that had those 2 channels setup differently. Are you able to simply change them back to your wireless mics

Are you using an external stage box or is everything physically connected directly to the back of the mixer?

Matrix vs group/sub outs?
@soundadvicewithrob3083
@soundadvicewithrob3083 Год назад
These are two diff and in fact opposite functions. A group/subgroup output allows you to group together several “inputs” eg. Channels etc. A Matrix allows you to combine outputs eg. Mix1 + Mix2 + Mix 4. The most common use for a matrix is simply a “copy” of an existing output such as LR

What about if you want to put PA subs/bass bins through a Matrix?
@soundadvicewithrob3083
@soundadvicewithrob3083 11 месяцев назад
Can be done. However it depends on what output you feed to the matrix. If it’s LR then you still need some processing to eliminate the frequencies that are not for the subs. Some would prefer to feed the sub via an aux where you only send the inputs you want in the subs from the start rather than removing stuff after the fact

Could you please do a video showing how to do this please? Both via matrix and via Aux mix. How do you route it from an Aux mix to the subs?
@soundadvicewithrob3083
@soundadvicewithrob3083 11 месяцев назад
@@dcgreen1987 Simply take the output jack for the aux mix and run that into the power amp that’s driving your subs

The subs are active, no power amp.

The plural of matrix is matrices, not matrix.

Disappointing. The MATRICES can't be split as a mono even though you have four physical outputs.
@soundadvicewithrob3083
@soundadvicewithrob3083 Год назад
Right. The closest you can get is assign 2 outputs to the matrix and push one hard left and the other hard right. In theory you can then get 4 mono outs
