Some planets would take a long time to get to by ship and its not like in star wars or star trek we dont have that kind of technology. I think what Elon meant is : You have 2 options in life. Live for the present and accept whatever the future is OR Live for the future with the aim to find an alternative place to live in case somthing goes wrong.Theres nothing wrong with both options, he just chose the latter coz thats what motivates him daily.He has the brain and money to do it. I think that is pretty simplistic thinking; if love evolved out of a physical need to breed, then we'd never have the art of Leonardo da Vinci or the music of Mozart, nor countless other things that comprise the higher nature of mankind and are inspired by love. If you watch anime like Macross you can always try making a giant city-like pod housing people while also having parks, trees, etc. Have it all regulated as we venture the solar system and elsewhere. Replicate it for space colonies on planets, etc. As much as I would love natural Earth, it's also interesting expanding outward.

Elon gave me my first job out of the USMC. That move made me what I am today 22ish yrs later. Elon was also the ONLY person at that company that listened when I found a major issue that needed to be fixed. The hubris of everyone else ignored this glaring issue. I admire some of what Elon Musk has done. His perspective is broad in some senses, but very limited in others. Before we start trying to colonise other planets we need to learn how to employ technology in a way that doesn't pollute and destroy our own. Until we've learned that we're not qualified to become earth's emissaries to the rest of our galaxy. Right now we're polluting immediate space with a heap of space junk. We still haven't learned to consider the consequences of our actions. Do we still have time to learn? Maybe. If we can survive the immediate consequences of our lack of foresight. You are correct: we are on a dangerous trek after years of unbridled consumption of fossil fuels and resulting climate change. Our hope for mankind: Taylor Swift. I think he sees it for what it is taking into consideration that there has been innumerable cataclysmic extinction level events throughout history. Just in the past 150-180 thousand years there have been 16 (if I'm not mistaken) on average every 9,500 years or so that were so devastating that if one of similar destruction would occur today the whole of our civilization globally would come to an abrupt end and our species reduced by ~85-95% in terms of population. Not to mention that everything we've built with our modern technology would more or less be wiped from the surface of the Earth with only the Ancient pyramids and other ancient structures constructed in similar ways in South America, Asia and to a lesser extent Europe/Britain (think Stonehenge) left standing within a thousand years from today. Meaning the few who would survive would have to start again from zero. So, it probably is a good idea to populate other planets while we still have the technology to do so. That would mean we could quickly (in relative terms) recover here on earth once a cataclysmic event occurs again (which is inevitable) here through communication with our interstellar colonies.

You factor in how long it takes to get to Mars (supposedly our best shot) combined with the number of trips necessary to take all the necessary supplies to support even a minimum sustainable population, and I don’t see it as happening. The main reason around the world that the number of people are declining is due to the laws that the governments created. The make laws in relationships that are baised against men. Men all over are learning that it is better for themselves to work on themselves and not get involved in a marriage that 60% fail and 80% of those failures are initiated by the women. Then the man in majority of the cases has to pay unreal amounts of money for alimony and child support. Also if governments are concerned about the decline of people than why are they so supportive of abortion. The governments aren't concerned about populations, they are concerned about taxes and more money for themselves. Many other reasons are also inplace as to why there is a decline in populations but most of those reason fall back on governments and the laws and agendas they push.

It doesn't matter what's coming. I don't want to live on any other planet. I believe it's our job while we are here to create, build and construct in a positive way,. An engineer builds bridges, an artist paints pictures, a doctor attempts to cure, and Elon is working on humans surviving whatever happens to our planet. We all have different jobs to do, and while I'm alive I will create in as positive a way as I can, and the rest will take care of itself. I don't worry about what will happen in the future and simply be as aware as I can be of today, with gratitude that I had some time on our beautiful Earth and that there are people who live and create in positive ways.
Thought provoking, as a relatively fit pensioner I feel that people like me should be encouraged to continue to contribute to society to help reverse the current trends. It may be just tree planting and making positive environmental improvements but it is better than doing nothing.
I`m planting lots of fruit trees for myself, wild birds, and people of the future, and I plan to root at least 50 cuttings by next spring to leave at a church food pantry dropoff. I`ve already bought 50 solo cups and I`m practicing rooting methods. That was the only thing I could think of to make a lasting contribution and it may save or at least improve lives in the future.

In my 60's, been hearing the world is gonna end my entire life. People should STOP saying that because it really damages children who have their entire lives to live. However, I do believe it's much safer to have multi planets with human life. If humans are going to survive, that's the only way. The possibility of one planet getting extinct is in the future but not every planet with life. So how do we get there and make this happen????
There are two possibilities here. 1. We start to colonise other planets before we have even learnt how to look after this one, in which case we will mess them up too 2. We first learn how to live sustainably and in harmony with this planet and the other life on it, in which case we will realise what a gift we have in this planet and that there is no need to colonise other planets for no purpose other than ego boosting. This is possibly why we have never detected alien life. Those aliens that are ego boosting will inevitably eventually wipe themselves out before being able to expand far. Those aliens that live sustainably and in harmony with their planet have no need to try to make contact with other civilisations.

The logical and most simplest solution is to take care of the planet we have and not pollute and poison ourselves to death. I’m almost 70 now, born in 1955, wow I’m so fortunate as the world was a different place as I grew up compared to now. We did stuff and had fun, no cellphone, no computer, very little pollution or global warming. Change was slow, not like now. The earth is a mess now, way over populated. I live in a big city and it’s a ******* mess now, crime, pollution, climate, pretty soon you will need to reserve a time Togo to the grocery store, I have to reserve to go to lakes and parks now, what a ******* mess.
Born in 1943 and I agree with you. Life was great in those years….all the freedom we had as kids,,,,choices of which gorgeous beach to go to….which park to visit…..riding buses as not all had cars. I respect Elon's vision. He's absolutely right. We're a species with amnesia. The planet has seen 6 extinction events. Our species has been devastated and the surviving children have rebuilt. It has happened many times. Every time our species rebuilt we lost all of the knowledge of our previous existence. And had to start over. Elon wants to help us avoid reliving the past and start a pretty incredible future!

Even if we are to do everything right and treat this Earth very well, the sad fact is eventually, this little planet we call our home, isn't gonna be sticking around forever. At any point, an asteroid big enough to devastate the Earth could wipe all of us out, and if that doesn't happen, there's plenty of other space anomalies like a very strong solar burst, gamma rays, and black holes. Not to mention we also have our own potential self-destruction from a war-gone-wrong or malfunction, or climate change, or whatever else, and well if we somehow luck out on those fronts, our Sun will eventually expand and ensure Earth's demise, possibly swallowing it up before finally burning out and turning into a white dwarf star, basically a dying/dead star expending the last of its remnant energy away. So the fact is, we have to figure out a way to dip Earth at some point if we care to exist long-long term. It might not be our lifetime to worry about it or anytime soon, but if we simply wait and hold back until it's too late and constantly put it on the backburner, it might be too late. We need all the time we can get when it comes to solving some of these complex problems. The Earth's time is limited, and all life on it will perish in time. The question is - will Humanity have been the ones wiped out on Earth, or will humanity live on and tell its tale to anyone out there still? I personally think working to achieve a goal of ensuring that humanity can live on beyond our planets finite time is a fairly good idea, especially if you like the idea of our species continuing on that is. Because one day, we will have to face the fact that Earth will meet its end. Will Humanity still be around when that happens, or will we simply perish along with the Earth, with the rest of the Galaxy never knowing we were even here or of our stories? We have the chance to ensure our stories are told, Earth is never forgotten until the end of time, and our people live on. I like to think that's what we're meant to work towards.

I don't know if I ascribe any sense of morality to this. No point in senselessly causing harm, but Earth is just another insignificant spec and Homo Sapiens is just another species on it. HS will become extinct at some point, and it won't be the first species whose excretions will have caused its own extinction. Something else will rise to take its place until the sun eventually dies. It sort of depends on the lens through which you view the world.
