I'm PID tuning the JBardwell F4 build. This is also the quad with the RCX 2306 motors on it, which I will eventually be doing the comparison to the RCX 2207. But first we gotta see how this quad flies, and see how these "cheap but powerful" motors perform.

Hey Joshua. I noticed the twitching almost immediately. I'm not saying I have eagle eyes or anything, its just a familiar site because I had the same problem. I started from the outside and worked my way in. New motors, escs, added caps to clean up battery noise, tried different soft mounts, hard mounts, I tried all kinds of tuning solutions, yada yada yada, After nothing work I bit the bullet and swapped out FCs and it all went away. I could hard mount everything, use the original motors and ESCS and it all the twitching went away. I'm 97.3% sure I had a faulty gyro. The manufacture responded me with "well when you have a faulty gyro it usually fails like blah blah blah" so they did nothing for me. This was just my situation and I hope yours is different, but you should be prepared for the worst and be ready to spend many hours disassembling and reassembling your quad.

Unfortunately I got a Joshua Bardwell flight controller with a bad gyro. ru-vid.com/video/%D0%B2%D0%B8%D0%B4%D0%B5%D0%BE-zeAUH9JNN8o.html. I troubleshot the hell out of it to the point that I finally swapped the flight controller into a completely different known good quad and the issue followed the flight controller. I was pretty bummed out.

I've found the best tool for that is setting Blackbox recording to the actual PID frequency, and just dong short flights (since that fills up memory fast). Do boring flying without hitting anything, and gyro spikes are incredibly easy to spot. Hopefully that helps and doesn't involve a lot of disassembly - trying to tune around gyro problems just shows you how big a tuning envelope there is, but mostly convinced me that I can fly junk that is miles off (single digit P values, really high I values, etc.) if I work at it, but flying good stuff makes life easy.

I'm increasingly convinced that setting Anti-Gravity gain to 5 (5000) and ignoring it from there is a good SOP. I've done this for the last 7 quads I've tuned, and I'm realy happy with it.

Your tuning vids are so entertaining and informative, jb. I did experience Some twitches like this, and after a bit of troibleshoot, i found a motor being a bit loose. Tightened the screws and it was solved.

For one of my builds twitches were caused by noise in RC signal. It's not really a noise, just a steps between 2 RC signal levels. Setting higher D setpoint weight (>1) amplify them a lot. Was solved for me by enabling RC interpolation.

The defaults are a little confusing right now tbh. But I think the dterm being in the 30's is because the dterm is a lot less effective with bounce backs when in complete measurement mode. My recommendations are to turn on dynamic filter turn on Anti-gravity. Then disable all notch filters but leave biquad on dterm. If your racing I recommend you leave setpoint weight off but also disable rc interpolation to sharpen up response on pitch and roll to bring them inline with yaw and throttle which have no interpolation anyway. (This produces a very direct control feel that is less affected by dterm and it's sensitivity to weather and temperature changes, you also have a true interpretation of the control links delay and can fly accordingly.) For freestyle however I would reduce dterm to 22 pitch and 20 roll and Then increase setpoint weight to 1.0 with a transition of arround 0.2. From then on you should adjust setpoint weight until you feel like the quad is responding on the pitch and roll similarly to yaw a throttle. ( This will produce much smoother flight, flips and rolls but will feel less direct but more responsive on consistent flying moves it largely ignores microcorrections).

This is good stuff. The only thing I disagree strongly with is setpoint transition. I really prefer transition of 1.0 if at all possible.

Regarding the twitches I think it's possible to see them by enabling the crosshair in the OSD. Fly in a straight line towards a fixed object and you can see the crosshair moving away from the object and back.

I'm using holybro tekko32 escs(wrath32 clones) and can confirm they are really great. My smoothest build. Gives better HD camera footage that my other 450 build with soft-mounted gimbal. FPV feed is absolutely noise-free.

And on wraith 32 one other thing I noticed is that the motors ar warmer with the filters on then with the filters off I'm running wraith32s on 4 of my builds and always recommend them on my build tutorials, if you start knowing them you never go back

Hey Bardwell from the future, I can tell you the twitches are typical of low D gain and you see them more when flying slowly straight. Higher your D-gain again and it should disappear ... (I'm at 10:00... didn't see the end). Its a good way to see when your D term is high enough I think. I had a quad that made it on 25-30 had to get back to stock. Maybe I'm wrong in your case

I have the same issue with the twitches during flat flight with my thumbs off the stick but mine is like a pretty decent wobble and I can defiantly see it in fpv

Interesting you drop D gains- I normally do that... BUT..... I then re-check motor temps then remove as many filters as I can(esp. PT1 and 2 notches)... if motors are cool then I continue to tune P and then re-raise D to smooth out propwash.... often find that motors are cooler with similar D numbers after completing this process... ie.... I've have less filtering giving me cooler motors (my assumption is that this is because the PID loop is responding much faster & accurately and not delayed causing wasted energy ) - this is on builds that have minimal noise in BBOX when I check the raw gyros (softmounted + caps for elec noise) Also I find that on true X builds need the P gain numbers to be a lot closer to one another, not so far out (I don't tune with gopro tho) I've had them being far apart induce weird mid-throttle oscillations

I can't wait for part two because I also have mid throttle oscillations... Soft mount FC, or even sticking on double side tape won't help so I am curious what Joshua will come up with to fix his problem.

I have the same exact twitches in my HD video, not to be seen in FPV feed. I have been trying to get rid of those for weeks. Changed motors, props, tuned the living hell out of my quad. Which is fitted with a Matek F405 (the first one). I'm 95% sure it is the Matek. Hoping two things here Joshua: that you will find a solution, that is NOT the FC ;). Oh, and I also have an iFlight frame, the XL5 v2 in my case.

How stiff are the arms of your frame? Sound pretty much like a structural problem if the frame is the only thing besides the board you didnt change.

It's stiff as far as I can judge. I just have a second one in the mail, which I will build all most the same, but different FC. Will see what happens :).

I personally had a ton of trouble tuning 32 bit escs, swapped back to old school multishot and it fixed my issue.. I cant quite figure those 32 bit setups out yet :) fly around the issues like the old days?

Weather might be better where you are, but it's freezing, windy and snowing here in the UK! I might still have to get a flight or two in though, avoiding landing in the snow as none of my quads are waterproofed...

One thing I notice about BF vs. Kiss is that the BF HD footage is not as clean. It's like there are always small oscillations or stepping present. I think it may be something inherent to BF.

Ye I noticed d term used to be at 20 ish for both and after like 3.1.7 they bumped d gains up in the 30s, when I built my quad with emax 2306 2400 kvs, it sounded terrible with the high ds, lowered and lowered them till on 22 and 20 and sounds and goes way better, 🤙🏻

hi josh could you please give me some info on how to calibrate the rssi in a laforge V4 I got the main and diversity module how many MW on the VTX power ? how many feet away from it during calibration ? antennas on the modules or off ? basically all the stuff they don't cover in the manual thank you enjoy the weather still waiting for spring in Colorado I miss flying a lot

OY! I have the Wraith 35A v2 in the mail and was literally about to buy the RCX NK2306's in minutes. I've been agonizing over what motors to get. NK2207? NK2306? Their 2206 V3's? I just can't spend more than ~$16/motor and everything else in that class that has a big bearing and nut instead of c-clip is like $22-24. Looking forward to the follow up videos!

Hi Joshua, I just builded a quadcopter for my graduation project but the problem is that when I did the flight test, the quadcopter is trying to lean to one side. It does not fly vertically as I move the stick. I tried different way of fixing the problem: 1. Re-calibrating the ESC. 2. Re-calibrating the magnetometer. 3. Re-calibrating the accelerometer by flattened the flight controller (FC) as much as possible. I did the test again by moving the throttle slowly until I reached half throttle, but unfortunately It leaned to one side until it crashed into the trees but thanks to god that nothing has been damaged only the propellers and I changed them. I don't know what is the problem exactly. Can you suggest any solution to the drifting issue. I tried to analyze the blackbox data but I could not as I'm not an expert and all these things are new to me. I'm going to graduate soon and I'm afraid that this project are not going to be finished. Note: - I'm using a PWM connection while calibrating in clean flight. - I'm not attaching a camera to my drone. - I'm using F6-ia6 receiver and transmitter. (Mode 2)

I'm running these motors on a couple of builds now and haven't noticed any issues with them. I'm far less likely to notice tiny twitches, but the motors always come down stone cold.

how does changing the weight affect your tune? If you have tuned your quad without a gopro, and then add the gopro, or if you tune it on 4S, then put on a 6S battery. Has anyone ever discussed this?

Adding weight has the effect of reducing gains slightly. Not literally, but the quad flies as if it has slightly lower gains. Going to 6S has the effect of raising gains significantly.

Ditto (although with Siskin32 ESCs - PT1 Dynamic & D-Term Filtering only) - might be that the faster response on 8k/8k means the motor isn't having to compensate quite as far and even if there are some spurious changes the overall requested RPM change isn't as big and stays easier to adjust, thus power draw is staying more consistent.

I've had motors run cooler after removing some filtering. I think there is a situation where the latency caused by the filtering screws up the D term phase and causes MORE heat instead of less. Is this possible??

Has anyone been working on self-adjusting PIDs? It seems like the gyro can detect bounce back better than humans. Maybe a pid tuning mode you can run for a couple flights then turn off and adjust by hand for feel and preference. Or an algorithm run on black box data...

I think most improvement has been in the sophistication of the PID controller so default PID flies well on more quads.

Hello. I'm having trouble correctly setting up my drone pid. when I do an acrobatic and I will resume acceleration the drone vibrates on the axis of the roll. What could it be?

prop wash refers to the "dirty air" left behind by your propellers. so if you spin around quickly to change direction you're flying through your own prop wash while still moving backwards for a little. People just say prop wash when referring to oscillations from prop wash.

Jb I'm getting them twitches also, but I can see mine when I punch it a little, I think it happening past half throttle. I had it do it on one fc and then when I flew yours it started doing it also. Can't figure out what's going on with that

Hey Josh, I have a king Kong 90gt and it drifts forward really hard every time I try to fly it. I've tried everything I can think of to correct it. I am flying in angle mode. I have watched a ton of vids on everything related to drifting, accelerometer, tuning, etc... Is it possible my fc is bad?

I have two quads all buttered up. One is MAGIC, the other, flies better on BF3.2. No silver bullet....... yet.

I cannot for the life of me get a sdcard to read in the jb f4. I've tried every betaflight build available. Every setting that has to do with blackbox and the sdcard. Bought the transcend and SanDisk 16g cards, formatted them with the recommended program. Pretty frustrating.

Hello . Maybe you can give me some advice here .. I just finished a build using the remix frame and the JB F4 flight controller .. every time I tried to do a save and close with version 3.3 . I got the following error .. unrecoverable failure of serial connection, disconnecting .. I reflashed reinstall 3.3 .. still had the same problem .. I went back at 3.25 and all is good .. Racedayquads told me it must be a betaflight thing .. I see in this tuning video you are using version 3.3 on your flight controller .. so first I was willing to wait for 3.3.2 .. because there are a couple options I would like to utilize in 3.3 .. so I'm wondering have you ever heard of this and do you know if there is a fix for this .. please let me know because I enjoyed soldering this flight controller it made the work very easy and clean .. I would like to eventually run 3.3 .. thanks

That just means that the FC disconnected the serial connection before the configurator did. It doesn't actually mean anything has gone wrong. Just ignore it and reconnect.

Okay thanks maybe I'll give it one more shot .. but I was running into the problem where it did not want to save my changes .. and I never get that with beta flight 3.2.5 .. whereas with betaflight 3.3 .. I got that every time I hit save .. which kind of tells me it has to be something with that version not the flight controller .. maybe this coming up weekend I'll try to bump back up and see what happens .. thanks

The Emax are objectively better motors, but the 2700kv were such battery killers, I find it hard to trust the 2400.

Sorry JB, I meant my post more like 'correct me if I'm wrong'? The default PIDs looked nice. So if we start with defaults and end with defaults. It that tuning?!?! Lol just joking. Because that is how 100% of my tuning goes... I always feel better with the defaults. I started this game in BF 3.x, and only get to fly 5 or 6 packs a week.

It depends largely on power to weight ratio. So a Tiny Whoop weighs nothing but has really high PIDs because it has weak motors.

My guess for these twitches at straight forward flying would be that an ESC is starting to desync. Although those Wraith should be awesome... I'll give 30% to an ESC and 70% possibility to a motor not dealing well with lower throttle.. Oh, and DAL 5046 Cyclones? I had almost the same twitches at straight cruising with them! Hello Joshua, I had read some time ago on Oscar Liangs blog (oscarliang.com/setpoint-weight-transition-derivative-error-measurement) that tunning with D set point weight to 1 can mask bad tune and it is advised to tune with 0. What experience about this do you have?

I don't fly with setpoint weight to 0 so I don't tune that way either.

Thanks for the answer I appreciate it. I tried setpoint of 1 but even with RC interpolation I am getting very "stair like" D gain on sharp maneuvers in BB log. Is it expected behavior?

Agreed..to be fair the twitch is on a prototype Matek FC supposed to be released at the end of march..
