Thanks Adam. Your channel is a buzz. I am not a machinist or turner or anything mechanical, but the skill-set is fascinating. And when you make a cock-up, or strike trouble, you show and explain. So good for the hobbyists and the young people starting their careers, and the ignorant (no offense - ignorance is just lack of learning)! And some experienced pro's, I imagine. And their comments are good to read. You're a champ in my opinion. And you have a lot of pleasure in front of you restoring that machine and I hope you enjoy all of it. Cheers, from NZ! Love your channel, man!

So cool to be able to see the inside of the machine while it's running to see how everything works. It's amazing to me how complex and yet at the same time how simple some of the mechanics of these machines are. Thanks for the look and can't wait to see how the project progresses.

Its amazing that the vast majority of this older heavy duty machines where made here in the Ohio valley area. The amount of industrial equipment that came from the Cincinnati, Pittsburgh, and Detroit triangle from the early 1900's all the way to the late 1980's when stuff started moving out of the US to China and other places. It is nice to see someone save some of this old equipment from the scrap yards. It's a shame how much has already been destroyed.
@PoignantPirate
@PoignantPirate 4 года назад
Most of our major industrial production was in that area because it was so far from the coastline but still had reasonable access to water shipping via the lakes and the Ohio river. It was a great combination for making it a difficult target for WW2/cold war airstrikes while still being relatively easy to move material around between different factories and out to the final delivery sites.
@DeepPastry
@DeepPastry 4 года назад
@@PoignantPirate ... While distance from coast may be a nice thing to have, it was more an unintended bonus. The reason was raw materials and the fuel to turn them into useful metals and the ease of transportation. Coal and iron ore are nearby, and the lakes and river mean you can move heavy loads cheaply. Which is why most of the steel mills and metal foundries were right there as well. Add a couple centuries where the cost to transport the castings, plates, etc were very prohibitive kept everything close.

You never just get the one shaper, it would be cruel. Shapers are social machines, and they like company. Now they can socialize about all the metal they cut over the ages. Be careful with those rear chains, at some points they looked like there was a little bit too much slack in them. The worst chain failures happen when a chain gets from slack to taut with a sudden jerk from the load accelerating rapidly. Whatever the chain is rated at, it's for static loads only. Much more substantial chains could be easily snapped by this machine if it were to really get going downhill. In fact, it's probably better to restrict chains to pulling/lifting only and secure the load on the uphill side using slings and ropes, which are going to be able to handle dynamic loads much better.

@quiescentnexus
@quiescentnexus 4 года назад
@@Highstranger951 6500lbs, or just shy of 3t. At the end of the downwards slide it was traveling at 0.7.-0.9 m/s (measured by playing frame-by-frame, at 60fps it's quite easy) and got decelerated by the chains within 0.15-0.20s. This exerted a force of approximately 52000N, or slightly over 230000lbf. This was *definitely* in excess of WLL of those chains and almost certainly above 2x WLL, at which point even most brand new certified hoisting chains are fully expected to just snap with zero advance warning. There you go, "smart guy". Adam himself wasn't in danger here because he kept his distance, but the shaper could have broken free and most likely fallen off the side of the ramp.
@quiescentnexus
@quiescentnexus 4 года назад
@@truckguy6666 There are no chains in this video that I'd call "big ass", not by a long shot. The one used for pulling, on the chain hoist side, was perfectly good for the job, but absolutely not "big ass" in my opinion. I've had my share of exciting rodeos as well, you see. I told Adam to use a sling or a rope instead of the two quite puny chains that held the rear of the shaper onto the trailer. The ones that stop the shaper at 9:35 and bounce it back up a bit. They barely held, according to some back-of-the-envelope calculations I made in another reply in this thread. Check them out. The reason for my recommendation is that chains subject to excessive shock loads (such as being rapidly tightened by a heavy moving object) can snap *extremely* violently, sending pieces of broken links at high speeds in random directions. People get killed by those. Slings and ropes, on the other hand, have a larger capacity to stretch, fail gradually, provide visible warning signs when damaged and failing, and don't throw shrapnel. Thus, a sling is safer for holding back a load that could get going on its own.
@Highstranger951
@Highstranger951 4 года назад
Remigiusz Marcinkiewicz it’s approximately 6200 Lbs according to the spec sheet and a ton is 2000 lbs so it’s over 3 tons. Your math is bullshit because you didn’t factor in mass. There is no possible way unless the whole machine was lifted and dropped letting the chain bear the load. Did you factor in friction? If so, explain how because I doubt you were there. Cure your ignorance.

Seeing that thing start to roll and pick up speed down the ram was RAD! My respect for doing that all by yourself. I'm looking forward to see this thing run - especially together with the G&E on, say, a production job! That'd look awesome, I bet, two rams moving back and forth next to each other - just like in the good ol' days :D

hi, I am a retired machinist with a lot of large lathe experience. Every thing except welding I have done. Over the years I have worked my way up the ladder to surface grinding, programing wire EDM and sinkers.Its nice to see not much has changed over the years. thank you.

That is one heavy machine. Good job getting it off that trailer by yourself and getting it inside your shop.

Thank You, Thank You, Thank you. The tip on Ozark Tool Manuals made my decade Adam. Have been looking 8 years for a manual for my Atlas Craftsman Lathe to replace the old water damaged and rotted one that came with it. I am ecstatic. God bless you.
