I bought another shaper! This video shows my journy up to North Alabama to pick it up and haul it home. On my way back I stopped by Randy Jones' place to pick up another smaller machine attachment and take a shop tour.
The Good of the Land Festival is coming up this October 26th 2019 in Temple Texas and will be held at the Texas Early Days Tractor & Engine Association. I plan to be there as well as many other RU-vid creators. Please come out and visit! It's going to a great time! Tickets available at thegoodoftheland.com
Also, the following weekend November 1st and 2nd will be the Soule Steam Festival in Meridian Mississippi at the Mississippi Industrial Heritage Museum. I plan to be there on November 2nd all day and invite my viewer out for this event to visit. It's an awesome place to see! Full line powered machine shop on display as well as steam engines. Other RU-vid creators will be there including James Kilroy, Clarke Easterling of Windy Hill Foundry, and Gary Cude.
I have a new Amazon store where I'm slowly adding many of the tools and products I use in my own shop. Amazon.com/shop/abom79

Nice to see a Beaver mill! I used to work for Beaver the manufacturer of the Beaver Pal, we closed in the 90's taken over by Mikron machine tools.I was an electrical engineer and built CNC Beaver parts master machines mainly, at their Norwich plant in Norfolk UK. I miss the smell of hot chips and coolant lol.

It was great to see the mill! You can see my logo is the same mill, I have a couple of videos of my PAL up on my channel if you are interested. There will be more in future too. Cheers, Craig

Always put a twist in the straps. So the straps don't "FLY" . When straps fly or flap around in the wind they loosen up. From my experience as a truck driver.
@turningpoint6643
@turningpoint6643 5 лет назад
You beat me to it HS. Same experience earned in the same place. Straight straps without that half twist on each side will always vibrate in the wind and start to wear themselves out. That simple half twist makes a huge difference.
@jonathanschrader7881
@jonathanschrader7881 5 лет назад
Hi... I was in the service hauled ammo for artillery we used 4" wide straps 2 per row (about 4500lbs of cargo) but it usually was 2 per row but we had them flat not twisted because it would tear them? So you would put more tension on the straps by twisting them? Then racheting them.
@turningpoint6643
@turningpoint6643 5 лет назад
@@jonathanschrader7881 You don't need them twisted if there already against or supported by the cargo. It's only when the straps are out in the wind and unsupported will they start to vibrate. It's that high speed vibration that quickly wears the straps out. With any deck truck on the highway check out how many have that half twist in the straps just above where they hook into the deck perimeter or above each tightening winch. It's only the inexperienced drivers who won't do so. The military from what I've heard have there own way of doing things that may or may not be based on logic. :-) But that half twist won't tear up the straps. The tension loads are still transmitted through the strap in the normal way, and it reduces those vibrations by a lot.
@jonathanschrader7881

K thanks was curious I do 4wheeling and Idk if I had been setting myself up and ur right bout the army.. The pls 16 ton 10 wheels detriot 2 stroke 54" michelins and a trailer yeah ... The 2 straps was probably for when we wreck with 155mm he lmao

If you know any firemen, see if they can hook you up with a old fire hose. When I was truckin doing heavy haul had some peices and used them as edge protectors for chain or straps.

Flat straps have a tendency to vibrate in the wind. The vibrations will cause excessive wear on the contact points of the strap. Putting a half twist in the strap will prevent that from happening.

Adam, what I started doing with my trailer fenders after building a few was to develop a bracket that attached directly to the axles instead of the bed of the trailer. What I found was that by doing so I could keep the distance between the wheels and fenders constant by taking the spring compression out of the equation. I used to do the same thing as your current design and experienced all the same challenges. Now my fenders move with the axles and the wheel to fender clearance stays the same. I don't know if you have room between the trailer deck and wheels but this may be a good alternative for you. I watch your videos all the time and maybe can give back with a worthy contribution. Take care my friend.

Adam. Pieces of scrap carpet work well if you don't have enough strap protectors. Also, I have a Bridgeport vertical shaping attachment I picked up years ago and refurbed it. It had a bad motor. I may also add that the weak point in them is a small gear in the stroke adjuster that can break. Just an observation. Hope yours is just fine.
@railfan439
@railfan439 5 лет назад
Adam: Go to the local fire department and ask if they have any condemned 2-1/2" fire hose. If so, get a length of it and make your own strap protectors. Cheaper than buying. See you at the Bar-Z. Jon

Hello Adam and just to let you know that I really enjoy your videos here on the southern tip of Africa in Cape Town. My old father was a machinist like you and I was fortunate to be able to spend a lot time with him as a youngster. Like you, he loved his four-jaw chucks and Greenfield taps. I'm an old man myself now, 77 this coming May, but I'll keep watching you with interest. Good luck with your new shop extensions and stay well. Greetings Sir.

I just unloaded a horizontal mill off of my trailer. It only weighed 3500-4000 lbs, probably a lot less then this thing. I left the trailer hooked to the truck and jacked it up a little to give it a slight slant. Then hooked a strap to the neck of the mill with the trailer winch and a snatch block. I pulled it forward and lifted the back end of the mill up a little. It didn't slide. :) When it lifted up a little I put a few lengths of 3/4" pipe under it and let it back down. Then used the wince to power it off putting new pipe under the front as the mill came off the pipes pushing it for encouragement when it needed it. I didn't want it to go off to fast. . It was amazingly easy to do this way. Turning it after it was in the garage was another story but I did it myself and it worked out well. Just have to be very careful because something this heavy does whatever it wants to so slow and steady works great. Good luck with your unload.

LUCKYEEEEEEEEE YOU. I've never seen a shaper with a box table like that AND that is the third only BP shaper attachment I can remember seeing. I really can't wait to see it run. When I was a young man so long ago one of my first jobs as a machinist I ran a 25' planer for a small company that made big press breaks and shears. One of the most enjoyable jobs I ever had, love that scrape'n n shape'n.

A Cheif Warrant Officer I knew in the service had a saying that went "properly maintained, any piece of equipment will run indefinitely". He had an affinity for old Indian motorcycles and surplus military vehicles from WWII. Also was one of the most knowledge mechanics I ever knew. We once had an old Jeep that had records of landing in Normandy on D-Day at our motor pool to be looked after before an event and he took it on a few victory laps around post before it had to go back to its owner.

You need to grease your hitch ball. When its dry the coupler can bite into it and actually spin it loose when turning. Its messy but necessary......
@markmawson1
@markmawson1 5 лет назад
Or he could machine a flat across the bottom of the collar of the ball where it sits through the reciever and weld a piece of flat/square stock aross the end of the receiver and then it wouldn't unscrew and when Adam changed out the ball he would only need one crescent wrench to undo and tighten the ball on.

You showed and spoke of the spilled oil on the boards of your trailer. Every time I change oil in my vehicles I take the old oil and mop it onto the boards of my tandem axle trailer and it makes a great preservative for untreated boards as well as add to protection for treated lumber. Of course I pull the trailer out into the field before I do it. Great video

@donlatimer5114

Adam when you go to re-deck your trailer you should fabricate some D ring tie down point’s onto the edge of the deck maybe by welding a 3 /8”or 1/2” C channel to the framework with a half inch iron plate on top to weld the D ring on , notch floor decking so the rings are below the top of the deck, you could put 4 or 6 per side.. this would illuminate having to run your straps over the edge of the frame … just something for you to think about while re-vamping your trailer

The ratchet straps are really neat and keep themselves organised, but i'm personally not sold on them. I'd be worried about taking them out on a rainy day down a gravel road and the retraction mechanism getting loaded up with junk. But I look forward to seeing you keep on testing them. Nice chains and boomers though. Those ratchet ones are great and remove the worry of losing your jaw or launching a boomer bar 30 feet in the air.

Adam try and think up of an idea of mounting the fenders to the axles so they are level with the bed when the trailer is empty but then when weight is added they will always be a set distance at all times even when the springs are fully compressed. Even if you have to mount 2 half fenders on each side so when the axles move independently of each other they don't foul each other

23:40 reminds me of the pillar drill my grandfather built/modified in the early 60 from an even older pillar drill from way before the first world war. Since he did not have those waterwheel transmission things bag from like the beginning of the industrial revolution, he had to take that stuff off an put on a electric motor. And because he was too lazy to keep changing belts for different speeds, he slapped on a BMW R25 motorcycle transmission. It is truly amazing how far he came with little to nothing after being trapped in a refugee camp in Slovakia during the war an then escaping the DDR in 1953.

Adam since you want to use the trailer like a deck over, you can cut the leaf spring mounts off and add material between them and the frame to raise the deck in reference to the wheels and tires. I think you will keep fighting the fender and deck clearance if you don't add some.
