The majority of russian soldiers though are on board. Recognize that "if all russian soldiers felt they were in the wrong, killing civilians, there would be almost no shelling from russian troops inside Ukraine" Instead, mass numbers of russian vehicles and tanks are launching missiles and tank rounds onto civilians. The vast majority of russian troops ARE NOT SURRENDERING, but are firing on civilians. These two guys are the exception, not the rule.

Most all German soldiers wanted to fight in WW2, and I imagine your grandpa actually did too. Germany had gotten a really bad deal after WW1, they lost valuable land and most all of their industry in the treaty. On top of that, they (the government) were required to pay the other nations for damages. It was impossible to do so since they had very little resources to raise money. So in the minds of most all Germans, it was a good and just reason to fight. My grandmother was in Germany during WW2 and one of my great uncles was in the army, they both said that they supported the war in the beginning. When the rumors started about the camps, they didn’t believe it. As time went on, people began to actually see some of the attacks on Jews, the camps, and trains taking Jews away. They then knew that Hitler had other plans. I remember my grandma telling me the story about being physically sick and crying all night when a very reliable friend told her about what he witnessed. She always felt shame for being a German during Hitler’s rule. She called him the little idiot that fooled the country.

This is why they only fire missiles and artillery now from long distances. All the Russian soldiers are afraid of dying, and they havent seen many come back from their infantry assaults.
