Friends, in today's presentation I have brought for you, a classic Bollywood film released in 1979. This best Hindi film based on a terrible tragedy was highly appreciated at that time. And the big thing is that this film is appreciated even today.
Based on a true story, this film is also remembered for the excellent performances of its star actors.
And with this, the name of the film is told, "Kala Patthar".
Yes friends! The film "Kala Patthar" was released on 24 August 1979. It was produced and directed by Yash Chopra.
Amitabh Bachchan's film forms a trilogy with "Kala Patthar", "Zanjeer" and "Deewar". This trilogy gave Amitabh Bachchan the status of first angry young man and later megastar in Hindi cinema. Such a film hero, who contained within himself the sea of doubts of the entire world. And when the tide of the ocean inside him came out, he became the favorite of millions of youth on the cinematic screen. Such a magic that the young generation of that era started loving Amitabh like crazy.
And in this way, the flow of spectators coming to the theater for Amitabh Bachchan was never broken again. The powerful scripts of all three films were written by the duo of Salim Javed. These are those films which turned the romantic trend of Bollywood upside down. And within no time the face of the hero of Hindi cinema had changed.
Hindi films of the 1970s are often remembered as the era of 'angry young man' Amitabh Bachchan, but it was also the era of multi-starrer films. When scoring the maximum number of A-listers for a film was considered a big win. Many films of this era - Amar Akbar Anthony, Hera Pheri, Muqaddar Ka Sikandar, Deewar, Sholay had multiple stars, but they were all also led by the same person - Amitabh Bachchan.
And looking back, one can see how Bachchan's real-life relationships (rumors) were sometimes used by writers and filmmakers in an attempt to sensationalize their projects, such as in the case of Silsila.
But, another film that fell victim to a similar trap was "Kaala Patthar" directed by Yash Chopra, where Salim Khan of the writer duo Salim-Javed insisted that Shatrughan Sinha be cast as Mangal. , who was rumored to be Amitabh Bachchan's rival at the time. In the film, Mangal is the arch enemy of Amitabh Bachchan i.e. Vijay.
Apart from "Zanjeer", "Deewar" and "Kala Patthar" were multi-starrer films. Shashi Kapoor was in the role of supporting hero along with Amitabh in "Deewar". Whereas "Kaala Patthar" also had an army of stars. In this, there was the trio of Shashi Kapoor and Shatrughan Sinha along with Amitabh. If we look at all three films, Amitabh's character appears to be on the same pitch.
A young man full of justified anger, a character struggling with struggle. As much as a character fights with the outside world, almost the same struggle is going on inside him without any interruption. Under its burden, he is unable to even express his emotions openly. Looks like he has been awake for centuries. There is a strange silence, the smile in the expressions of all three characters of Amitabh is temporary.
As far as "Kala Patthar" is concerned, it will be kept among the best films of Amitabh Bachchan. Even though it did not achieve commercial success on a larger scale than "Zanjeer" and "Deewar" and did not impress critics as much. But while watching the film, it becomes clear that despite the abundance of stars in "Kaala Patthar", Amitabh Bachchan had stolen all the limelight on the basis of his acting.
While he was accompanied by veteran actors like Shashi Kapoor, Shatrughan Sinha, Rakhi, Nutan, Parveen Bobby, Prem Chopra, Prem Nath and Parikshit Sahni. There were many shades in the characters of Shashi Kapoor and Shatrughan Sinha. Probably "Kala Patthar" is the first Bollywood film based on an industrial tragedy. Its story was inspired by a coal mine accident near Dhanbad. In which a large number of workers died due to the tunnel being filled with water.
Kaala Patthar came at a time when Salim-Javed had already given hits like Zanjeer, Deewaar, Sholay, Don and were considered at the top of their game. According to Deeptakirti Choudhary's book 'Written by Salim-Javed', the writer duo had started setting a price of Rs 21 lakh by the late 1970s, which was a huge sum at that time.
