Krishnadevaraya, the powerful ruler of the Vijayanagara Empire, engaged in a significant military campaign against the Gajapati King of Orissa, Gajapati Prataparudra Deva, in the early 16th century. The conflict between Krishnadevaraya and Gajapati Prataparudra Deva took place primarily during the years 1513-1514. The root cause of the conflict was the strategic and territorial interests of both rulers. Additionally, Gajapati Prataparudra Deva was expanding his influence in the eastern Deccan region, which brought him into direct conflict with Krishnadevaraya.
The Vijayanagara Empire and the Gajapati Kingdom had a history of both alliances and conflicts. Gajapati Prataparudra Deva had earlier supported the Bahmani Sultanate against Krishnadevaraya, which led to strained relations between the two.The Battle of Ummatur, fought in 1513, is one of the notable engagements between Krishnadevaraya and Gajapati Prataparudra Deva. Krishnadevaraya emerged victorious in this battle, capturing the Gajapati king and taking him as a prisoner. However, the conflict did not end there. The situation changed when the Bahmani Sultanate, recognizing the threat posed by Vijayanagara, decided to support Gajapati Prataparudra Deva.In response, Krishnadevaraya faced a combined force of the Gajapati army and the Bahmani Sultanate. The Battle of Raichur (also known as the Battle of Raya Chura) in 1520 is another significant event in this conflict. Krishnadevaraya, with his military acumen and strategy, defeated the allied forces, securing a decisive victory. Following the defeat, Gajapati Prataparudra Deva accepted the suzerainty of Krishnadevaraya. This marked a turning point in the relations between the Vijayanagara Empire and the Gajapati Kingdom. Gajapati Prataparudra Deva became a subordinate ally of Krishnadevaraya, ensuring a period of relative stability in the region. The conflicts and alliances between the Vijayanagara Empire and the Gajapati Kingdom were part of the larger political dynamics of the Deccan region during the 16th century. These events played a role in shaping the geopolitical landscape of South India during that period.
