How to save your kidney from dialysis?
Better Ways to Care for Your Kidneys
Most likely, your #kidneys aren't receiving adequate care. African-Americans are three times more likely to have renal failure than the 26 million adult Americans who have the condition but are unaware of it.
It’s a silent killer, it has very few symptoms, and most people find out that they have kidney disease when they’re in the emergency room and in the advanced stages of the disease,” says Anne Black, chief executive officer of the National Kidney Fund of Illinois. “And at that point, it’s either dialysis or kidney transplant in order to live.”And to survive at that point, one must choose between dialysis and a kidney transplant.
1. Increase your water consumption.
Water is vital for the functioning of your kidneys because it helps them clear waste from your body and allows blood to transfer nutrients to them. It also helps to keep kidney stones and urinary tract infections at bay. Although an eight-glass goal is a decent starting point, everyone requires a different quantity. The Institute of Medicine presently advises 13 glasses per day for males and nine glasses per day for women.
2. Keep an eye on your weight.
Weight has an indirect effect on your kidneys. Excess weight, particularly around the waist, raises the risk of several illnesses. Chronic kidney disease can be caused by chronic conditions such as diabetes and hypertension.
3. Maintain healthy blood pressure.
One out of every three Americans has high blood pressure. Uncontrolled, it is the country's second biggest cause of renal failure. Work to keep your blood pressure below 120/80 to prevent this danger.
4. Get your feet moving.
According to University of Maryland experts, exercise is one effective approach to lower blood pressure. Most days, 30 to 45 minutes of aerobic activity can assist.
5. Avoid pain relievers.
When we have a headache or aching muscles, it's simple to grab for the medicine cupboard, but over-the-counter pain relievers like ibuprofen restrict blood flow to the kidneys. Excessive usage of these medications can result in chronic renal damage. Take them only when absolutely essential and at the lowest possible dosage.
6. Skip the additional drink.
For most people, consuming one or two drinks on occasion will not have a negative impact on their kidneys, but frequent drinking will. The Centers for Disease Control and Prevention defines one drink as one 12-ounce beer, one glass of wine, or one ounce (about a shot) of hard liquor. However, many people eat far more, which can lead to long-term difficulties. Binge drinking (consuming more than five drinks at once) can induce immediate renal failure, and drinking heavily can cause gradual, long-term damage that is irreversible.
7. Refrain from smoking.
Although many people equate cigarettes with lung health, smoking also has an impact on the kidneys. Smokers are more likely to have protein in their urine, which indicates that their kidneys are overworked. This is worse if you drink and smoke. That implies you're five times more likely to get chronic kidney disease if you don't do either.
8. Avoid using drugs.
Prescription and recreational medications are both harmful to your kidneys. If you have renal difficulties, common prescriptions for medications like antibiotics and insulin may need to be altered, and illicit substances like cocaine and heroin might cause harm. Even if you believe it is safe, do not take any medicines without the guidance of a physician.
9. Avoid heavy metals and hazardous substances.
Be cautious if your job needs you to be exposed to heavy metals and harmful chemicals. This sort of poisoning is absorbed first by the kidney. If you believe you have been exposed, notify your doctor so that you may be tested. The poison can occasionally be eliminated to avoid additional complications.
