Although the Thirukazhukundram Shiva Temple is in a near-ruinous state, the divine presence of Lord Shiva continues to be revered by devotees. The temple, facing east, features a three-tier Rajagopuram built with brick on the south side, now leaning precariously and likely to collapse in a few years. The compound wall is missing, yet the power of Shiva endures.

A Glimpse into History
The Thirukazhukundram Temple, originally constructed during the Chola period and later patronized by the Vijayanagara Kings, now stands on the verge of collapse. Vegetation and trees have overgrown the sanctum, contributing to its deterioration. The inscriptions found here have been recorded and published in the Kanchipuram Mavatta Kalvettukkal.
According to these inscriptions, the place was once called Nerumur alias Mathuranthaga Nallur, and Shiva was worshipped as Thiruvanmichuvaramudayar.
Notable Inscriptions
10th Century Rajaraja-I: An inscription starting with his title records an endowment of a Sandhi Lamp and worship, with land gifted for the same.
Rajendra Chola-I (1119 CE): A 40th reign year inscription starts with his title. The inscription is incomplete.
Kulothunga Chola’s 49th Reign Year: Another incomplete inscription.
12th Century Chola Period: Records a land gift by Vettakudiyan Puliyathevan to Thiruvaneechuvaramudayar, signed by Nerumur Nattu Muvendha Veelaan.
13th Century Chola: An inscription records a gift of 2 ma land as Thevadhana Irayili.
Sambuvarayar King Rajanarayanan (1365 CE): Records a land gift for temple maintenance as sarvamanyam.
14th Century Vijayanagara King Kambanna Udayar: A fragment inscription mentions the King’s name and the donation.
Vijayanagara King Devarayar-II (1436 CE): An inscription records the levy of Noolayam Tax.
13th Century: An inscription on a pillar records the pillar gift by Ilattur Madhoorudayan Aludaya Nayanar.
