We know that Singapore is just a City, so we can't compare it with a country like Sri Lanka when it comes to governance and administration. What we shouldn't forget is there was no divisional politics they accepted everyone as Singaporean. Though the Chinese were the majority they gave due importance to intelligence, dedicated to hard work immaterial of race, cast or creed. They gave English due importance, in place of Chinese, to maintain international and inter racial relationship. So there was no brain drain or entrepreneur drain. I understand that we the socially developed should give room for the downtrodden and vernacularly educated to come up by stepping aside. But what's happening today is alarming where the professionals, educated youth and enterprising individuals are leaving our shores leaving us with individuals who expect everything from the government. English helped them gain modern know how and kept them up to date with modern trends. They didn't want to suppress the communities and business establishments that had prospered during foreign rule. There was a continuation, breaking their backbone was not their priority. Most importantly they adopt integrity, accountability, responsibility, transparency and credibility as their way of life.
Lenin rose against oppression in Russia. Mao Tse Tung rose against oppression in China. Che Guevara helped Cuba rise against oppression. In Sri Lanka since independence every government has been dedicated to uplifting masses. Since independence they have strived hard to provide free education, health, social benefits and maximum employment opportunities through government establishments. Here the JVP and the Tamil Militants, showing no gratitude, rose against the very same government that helped the common masses come up and the wealthy who paid as taxes for the betterment of the common masses.
For generations from the days of Indus valley civilization we have interacted with other cultures, philosophies while developing trade. We have also embraced their cultural values and philosophies over time while they too have. Today the ardent Arab Islamist countries too are embracing faith worship sites of other faiths of around the world. They realize the importance of moving along with the world for progress. Similarly they need to recognize the cultures of others if they are to become players in the global arena. So countries need to become secular in approach while protecting their own. Unless we realize this we cannot move forward. Inorder to make revenue we need to be a global player. We have become indebted to other countries so to restructure the debts we need to have cordial trade relationship. That means while we make money from them we need to give room for them to make money from us.
A person has to be provided a conducive environment, the necessary knowledge and training and opportunities to improve skills to convert the genetic abilities and courage of a person passed down generations into talent. So if a person is not provided these facilities the innate genetic abilities and courage of the person cannot shine. Similarly providing all these facilities to a person who has no innate genetic abilities and courage cannot shine either. Talent doesn't distinguish between cast or creed. Let's learn to recognize talent beyond cast or creed. Only then can we progress as Sri Lankans.
