Almost all global wealth was made after the 1950s India had a large proportion of World GDP , but world GDP was poor. You had no modern medicine, no automobiles , no electricity, no train, no internet. These are all European invention. You can't claim to be rich without these technologies. Now is the wealthiest india has ever been.
Mode of production is an important factor in assessing economic status and possibilities. Because India was second in the world thousand years ago does not mean that India would have stayed there if British had not occuppied India. Mode of production has changed vastly over the years and India has not kept up with Industrialization and wealth creation shifted from Asia to Western countries. This is a fact very much overlooked by people like Tharoor in his assessment. The yardstiks of wealth and production have vastly changed.
This is what is brought out by Maddison’s estimates of GDP per capita, again in PPP terms in 1990 dollars. In 1 AD, India’s GDP per capita was $450, as was China’s. But Italy under the Roman Empire had a per capita income of $809. In 1000 AD, India’s per capita income was $450 and China’s $466. But the average of the West Asian countries, such as Turkey and Iraq, was much higher at $621. In terms of general prosperity, therefore, it was the Arab world that was doing well a millennium ago. The Caliphate in Baghdad was a centre of power at the time and both science and culture flourished. By 1500, though, new centres of prosperity had emerged. India’s per capita income was $550 and China’s $600 in 1500. The Arab world had declined. But standards of living in Western Europe at that time had already gone far ahead. Italy topped the table, with a per capita income of $1,100, the Netherlands following with a per capita income of $761. This was the Italy of the Renaissance, the Italy of Michelangelo and Leonardo da Vinci, of Raphael and Titian. The UK was not far behind, with a per capita income of $714. By 1600, the centre of Europe had shifted northwards and the golden age of Holland had begun. Dutch per capita income was $1,381 in 1600, while Britain in Shakespeare’s time had a per capita income of $974. Recall that 1600 was the year the East India Company was founded. In contrast, India’s per capita income continued to be $550, while China’s was $600. Note that even Ireland, one of the poorest of Western Europe’s countries, had a per capita income of $615, higher than India’s and China’s. In short, the per capita GDP numbers mirror the changes in power, prosperity and cultural and scientific achievement. It wasn’t till 1981 that India had a per capita income of $977, beating that of Britain in 1600. And it wasn’t until 1993 that India’s per capita income of $1,399 surpassed what the Dutch had achieved in 1600. Maddison’s calculations show that in 2008, India’s per capita GDP ( in 1990 dollars, PPP terms) was $2,975, slightly more than one-third of the world average of $7,614.
This is true. To add one more point, the scientific revolution which began in the West since 15th - 16th Centuries propelled them forward leading to Industrial Revolution. Whereas in India, it was documented that during the same period our monarchies did not give science and technology the importance it deserved. To quote one historian, it was this ‘cultural failure’ that made India not progress like West.

If we look at the per-capita income of India and Britain in the 1750s, Britain's per-capita income was three times that of India as per Maddison's data, and India's per-capita income had been declining for a century before Britain won the Battle of Plassey. Comparing the total GDP of India and Britain in the 1750s to argue that India was richer than Britain is like saying that Uttar Pradesh is richer than Goa today. Later, the Industrial Revolution occurred in the Western world after the Scientific Revolution, with the invention of machines and technologies like the steam engine, and their wealth increased exponentially. Meanwhile, India's global share of GDP dropped to 4% in 1950. The same thing happened in China, which was not directly colonized. In fact, China's per-capita income was even lower than India's at the time of independence. During the 1750s, China's per-capita income was higher than India's. Therefore, if we say that Asian countries are poorer because of colonization, then what happened to countries like Nepal, Bhutan, Ethiopia, and Liberia, which were not colonized? It's worth noting that Nepal has a similar history and culture to India, yet it is the poorest country in Asia. The fact that Nepal was not colonized by the British undermines the argument that colonization is solely responsible for a country's level of poverty. India was a good exporter of clothing and other premium goods such as jewellery but after British came they made India a raw materials exporter and destroyed India’s artisans and traders . If India stayed independent India would have done industrial revolution like Japan and would have become a country like Japan very early.
@@Abhilash-. Almost 40% of the Indian subcontinent was left to native rulers but they didn't take any initiative for industrial revolution. Many countries that were not under any colonial powers like Thailand, Iran, Nepal, Ethiopia, Turkey didn't play any role in industrial revolution. Japan was actually a colonial power since 1900, they only industrialized their military also their economic growth was not that impressive, Japan's per-capita in 1935 were almost 3.5 times as that of India and almost the same as that of Singapore at that time. India was 5th largest economy in 1950s having total GDP more than Germany and Japan, look at where those countries are.

Indeed China has lifted more people out of poverty than any other country. In 1978, China was poor.and had a GDP per capita level similar to Zambia - lower than half of the Asian average and lower than two thirds of the African average. China experienced an average GDP growth of close to 10% per year until 2014, raising per capita GDP almost 49-fold, from 155 current US Dollars (1978) to 7,590 US Dollars in 2014, lifting 800 million people out of poverty. China achieved this feat by becoming the world’s manufacturing hub, specialising in the labour-intensive, export-led production of cheap goods that enabled a gradual increase in product complexity. In a nutshell, its growth strategy was to assemble and sell cheap goods to the world. Leveraging the lowest wage-rates by exploiting its poor citizens like no liberal democracy could! Gradually, thanks to the contagion of capitalism infecting it between 2010 and 2012, private sector firms produced between two-thirds and three-quarters of China’s GDP; it also accounts for 90% of China’s exports. There is another side to the Chinese economy: China’s already high investment levels of around 50% of GDP will be difficult to sustain in light of total debt having reached 237% of GDP (2016), up from 148% at the end of 2007. .. However, from an export-oriented economy, China is shifting cater to domestic development and demand. That is becoig more like Indian economy! Miracles of the past may not recur… Please note, China lacks some elements of a modern market economy-for example, the legal system falls short of the support for property rights in advanced countries. The high investment model of Japan and Korea that China followed can lead to its own problems, as Japan’s experience over the past 20 years! There is an observation that Chinese economy is fundamentally driven by overbuilding-too many roads, bridges, and buildings . Many such are unproductive investment and the rising debt fuels China’s rapid growth and China’s environmental degradation is said to be at the point of no return! BS! The argument that the Europe got rich by exploiting its colonial empires is laughable. First of all, Western Europe before it started colonizing was already the richest area in the world in GDP per-capita. Similarly, once Europe gave up its colonial empires it had massive economic surges while the former colonies mostly saw declined in standards of living. You can’t find a correlation between economic success and colonialism. Colonization is something that had been doing by human beings since the stone age. Massive colonial empires like Spain, Portugal were poorer than the smaller better developed states with not much large colonial empires like Germany and Scandinavia. Make your own claims for your self-satisfaction. I'd like to highlight a point for consideration that there have been instances recorded where a congregation of individuals possessing robust immune systems has come into contact with a gathering of individuals possessing weaker immune responses, resulting in adverse outcomes for the latter. The historical case of the Bubonic plague serves as a notable illustration of this phenomenon. Would you say that Mongols also had a plan to exterminate Europeans with the same logic? If you are saying that Europeans had a plan to exterminate the locals wherever they went then why the population of India increased from 200 million in 1800 to 350 million in 1950 and the population of Africa increased from 81 million in 1800 to 227 million in 1950 and you should note that all these happened during the colonial period.

In 1750, India had 23% of the world's GDP because it had 25% of the world's population. However, Britain was already a wealthy country even before it colonized India. If we look at the per-capita income of India and Britain in the 1750s, Britain's per-capita income was three times that of India as per Maddison's data, and India's per-capita income had been declining for a century before Britain won the Battle of Plassey. Comparing the total GDP of India and Britain in the 1750s to argue that India was richer than Britain is like saying that Uttar Pradesh is richer than Goa today. Later, the Industrial Revolution occurred in the Western world after the Scientific Revolution, with the invention of machines and technologies like the steam engine, and their wealth increased exponentially. Meanwhile, India's global share of GDP dropped to 4% in 1950. The same thing happened in China, which was not directly colonized. In fact, China's per-capita income was even lower than India's at the time of independence. During the 1750s, China's per-capita income was higher than India's. Therefore, if we say that Asian countries are poorer because of colonization, then what happened to countries like Nepal, Bhutan, Ethiopia, and Liberia, which were not colonized? It's worth noting that Nepal has a similar history and culture to India, yet it is the poorest country in Asia. The fact that Nepal was not colonized by the British undermines the argument that colonization is solely responsible for a country's level of poverty. @@jeanettewee8805 Well said. In 1750, Mughal empire's GDP was $6 billion .In 1947, independent India's GDP was $26 billion. So , GDP under British actually increased more than 4 fold. Both India and China fell from approx 23% of world GDP in 1750 to about 3% in 1950. We have to realise few countries like USA, Australia , Canada who where virtually non existent in 1750 became big economies in next 200 years and hence everyone's GDP share in world stage reduced.
