There are lots of experimental proofs to support the bending of light near massive objects. The reason to understand this phenomenon is that this increases the distance that light has to travel. Light, being the very essence of perceiving time for an event to occur, has a speed of 299 792 458 m/s or 300,000 Km/s. This speed of light is constant in both accelerating and non-accelerating frames of reference meaning it is the same if the observer is stationary or accelerating. Time = Distance / Speed Since the distance travelled by light near massive objects increases and the speed of light is constant, the time elapsed for an event will increase. In other words, time slows down. This is the reason for the slower ageing of the astronaut who is in a planet close to a black hole where the gravity will be extremely high relative to Earth’s gravity as depicted in the movie ‘Interstellar’. It is said in the movie that 1 hour in the planet close to the black hole equals 7 Earth years. So light travels 7*365*24 times more distance than on Earth. That’s a lot of space warping!!!!!! Consider this simple thought experiment where you are standing at a distance of 1m from a lamp holding a stopwatch that can even measure 0.1 nanoseconds. You switch on the lamp and at that very instant you also started your stopwatch.
