Good Read. Though many comments point out that it's intended as a counter narrative to the Ivory Throne (yet another good read ) , one does not feel so when you read the book and decode it's primary objective - Revisiting the reign and achievements of Sri Chithra Thirunal (which are more or less non existent in present day history books of Kerala) . Though both books do have some common plots which again are viewed from strikingly different perspectives, they don't really clash. At the end of the day, one realizes the good old saying by Robert Evans "There are three sides to every story - Your side, My side and the Tuth. And no one is lying. Memories shared serve each differently ".

@@aswathynair5795 Manu pilla is brilliant. but the only mistake in his research is that he blindly thinks that whatever coded in the british archives are true and nothing is manipulated in it because he thinks that british has no ulterior motive when coding the diaries and reports. he also thinks that the narration of history by the travancore royal family is always false and manipulated according to their wishes. according to manu, whatever the British wrote about history is right and whatever the travancore royal family wrote is wrong and biased. this is the only bias in his research.

Correct. History of Kerala was presented previously based on the Parasurama myth propagated by Brahmins who controlled power so as to delegitimize the legacy and legitimacy of the majority of people here cast(e) aside as avarnas. So naturally when a book based on empirical and reliable evidence challenges such old mythical bullshit passed off as "ithyhyam," there will be such feeble attempts to defend the faith that has historically given a minority of people power over a majority without franchise.

In my opinion, when a person writes history of her own grandmother and uncle, it would be led more by emotional expression rather than facts. But Manu, being an outsider would be better in expressing truth impartially based on the facts and evidences he collected from the British archives. So 'Ivory throne' is much more reliable i feel. And no man is infallible. From earlier days itself in the words of royal family about chithira thirunal and his mother, they were equated to some demi gods. It feels so exaggerated and hyperbolic. And Raja Bakthi itself is an obsolete concept.

She says her Ammoomma has nobody to defend her name. Well, if her Ammoomma has done misdeeds and manipulations, then surely she will be judged based on objective accounts of history. Then its not worth defending her, but its understandable that as her granddaughter, this lady will want to whitewash her legacy. Its akin to asking "who is there to defend the name of Veerappan or Hitler?" If people with power have/had done wrong, then there is no point glorifying them and making hagiographies in the face of counter evidence. Also making fabricated claims of attempted assassinations (without making any case for reliable evidence) for drawing sympathy from sycophants and then taking a hypothetical "munkoor jamyam" counter argument as if to justify the fabricated account is childish and really does not bode well for her dignity. Finally, wishing to be willfully ignorant of the factually researched book that she is critiquing with her own rebuttal book suggests her book is an attempt at blind defensive propaganda. How can one critique a work one has not read? Pretty absurd. And words she uses to define the basis for her justifications such as "kaazhchappad" and "thonnal" aimed at tugging emotions don't stand in the face of evidence- and record-based accounts. Its the difference between subjectivity and objectivity that makes all the difference between her book and Manu's book.

Every story has two sides. Only the relatives and people who lived around that era know the truth. Aswathi Thirunal Gouri Lakshmibai knows better than anyone about what really happened. Ivory Throne is not reliable. Just because he collected some evidence from British archives doesn't mean it is the truth. Thanks to Aswathi Thirunal for writing a part of our history and bringing it to public domain.

Why only two sides? There can be more based on the number of stakeholders in that historical experience, which can be subjective. However, your attempt to disregard "evidence from British archives" which stands the test of scrutiny more than the emotional appeals of a relative invested in personal legacy is futile to thinking citizens of a modern democracy.
