K.V. Prasad started learning the mridangam from the age of six from the Late Eranakulam Narayana Iyer. Parassala Ravi, Principal of the Palakkad Music College and Sangeetha Kalanidhi T.K.Murthy further helped him develop into a complete mridangam player. He is one of the most versatile percussionists of the day and can play the tabla, Western drums, chenda, and the Congo drums. He won the first prize in the All India Radio mridangam competitions in 1974 and the Kerala Sangeeetha Nataka Academy award for three consecutive years. Prasad, who is an A-Top-Grade artiste with All India Radio, Madras, has provided mridangam accompaniment to several stalwarts including Vikku Vinayakaram and Mandolin Srinivas, and represented India in international music festivals.
