What a nice conversation! I also have a Sai Kumar story - nothing exceptional but still very important to me. Forgive me for not writing in Malayalam because of a software glitch on my keyboard. Part 2 of the interview took me back around 33 years ago to 1989 when I had just completed graduation and was obsessed with journalism. I wanted only to be journalist but Manorama will take only postgraduates with a first class. I was neither. Since there was nothing much to do as I was waiting for the result, I thought I will write some unsolicited features and gatecrash newspaper offices with a job request. I was always fascinated by professional theatre, especially about what happened backstage and the nomadic life of the actors who transform almost every evening into outsized characters whose majestic existence had little in common with the everyday life of the actors who brought them alive on stage. Big Preman (Valiya Preman) was my cousin and my lasting teenage memory of him was his absence from our regular lives. When I used to go to his home during the day, he was almost always asleep after the stage performance the night before. He was Preman to others but Mohananchettan to us cousins. An imposing figure, I was initially scared of him but later looked forward to meeting him. One, he spoke to me as if I an adult and because he had little time to waste, he will not bullshit. Second, he was always generous. Everytime he saw me, he would take me out and buy me beef and dosa. (Kochu Preman was also a regular presence at their home.) So, when I did not know what to do, I asked Mohananchettan if I can travel with him for a week. He readily agreed. One noon, I packed a bag and landed up at the Sanghachetana office in Venjaramoodu near Trivandrum. The troupe’s bus was ready but not all seats were filled. Mohananchettan introduced me to some of the actors and the crew and moved away, leaving me to my devices as was his unobtrusive nature. Since many seats were empty, I plonked myself on one. A little later, the bus started filling up. There was a gentle nudge and a person told me I was occupying his seat. I apologised and took another seat, only to be nudged again by its claimant. Slowly, it dawned on me: this is not a lawless and indisciplined system as was perceived by many layperson. There was a command and control system - a hierarchy in which everone’s place is clearly demarcated as on the stage. (Later, when I was accepted as part of the caravan, some people told me that there was initial suspicion that I had replaced someone but they could not imagine a skinny fellow like me would fit into any role and so they thought I was a technician who did not know how to respect artistes.) The bus was ready to roll but some seats were still empty. Someone told me the others live along the way and they would be picked up along the way. The first show that night was at Kuravilangadu. On the way, a couple joined us. I was struck by the man who had curly hair. He took one of the front seats, which suggested a position high up. When I asked a fellow traveller about him, he told me that is Swati Tirunal. I did not initially believe him. For me, Swati Tirunal was a brooding figure. This man had a nonchalant air about him, a devil may care attitude. And I think he chain-smoked. He was definitely not in character. When we reached Kuravilangadu, I moved around with the crew and found out how they transformed the stage with what had looked like nondescript plywood boards that were stacked on the roof of the bus. The sight was fascinating. Again clockwork precision that comes from practice. Everyone knew what to do, which board to place in the giant jigsaw. I was the only odd one out, scared that I will get into their way. Then a techician invited me up, where lights were being hung from a false ceiling. I still remember the breathtaking sight when the lights were switched on for testing. This indeed is a magical world, I realised and felt what I later understood as the electric - addictive - spark of show business. The technician told me local intelligence is that the audience will be an unforgiving one. If they felt the momentum flagged, some would howl and some will come prepared (meaning after downing a few drinks) to hold the troupe accountable. I had no idea the actors and crew faced such challenges and it helps to read the pulse of the audience beforehand. I still don’t know if it was the done thing or it was an exception that day. I was a bit worried. I had no doubt that Mohananchettan will impress the audience as Major General Cullen. He had already established a formidable reputation on stage. But I was not sure of the hero, the chain-smoking gentlemen permanently sporting what looked like a cross between a smile and a smirk. Although I was planning to write about the backstage, I sought permission to watch my first show with the audience. I am glad that I did. I had never seen such a transformation before. Sai Kumar stepped on stage and I gasped. Is this the same person who was riding front seat? I could not believe myself. From where I was seated, what mesmerised me most was his dialogue delivery. The diction, pronunciation and pace were so perfect that it was almost as if everyone in the audience had a personal headphone (we did not even know of such an object then, we used to say earphone that was used as hearing aid, not as enhancer of sound quality.) Suffice to say that Sai Kumar delivered a regal performance. Later that night after a thunderous ovation, I realised that I am travelling with a superstar. In this interview, he is being humble. Truth is on stage, Sai Kumar was bigger than Mohanlal and Mammotty of the time - and he had to do it every night without the safety net of a retake and in front of some of the most outspoken (if not violent) critics who kept changing from stage to stage. I do not know what works on stage but he could somehow own the stage and cast a spell on the audience. It is a rare gift. Since my feature was more about the backstage, I mingled more with the crew and spoke to them more. Sometimes when I had doubts, I would speak to some actors. I kept Sai Kumar for last because I wanted to learn about professional theatre, do my homework and avoid any blunder with him. What I did not know was that Sai Kumar had noticed me. A scrawny bloke interacting with the crew, flitting in and out of bacstage and travelling with them. Midweek, while I was backstage, Sai Kumar gestured and called me over. I still remember his smirky introduction: “Aniya, njangallokke evide unde.” I did not know what to say. Actually, I had no bona fide credentials to speak to such a great actor. I was not a journalist, I was pretending to be one, hoping that one day I would become one. I mumbled an apology and sought an appointment. He readily agreed to meet me the next day. It did not work out because there was an I scheduled show or some such engagement. Finally, he spoke to me, seated on the lawn in the ground in front of a hall in Ernakulam. Needless to say, as is evident from this interview, he is a natural born conversationalist. He largely spoke about how professional theatre groups are misunderstood by the general public and the work that goes into some performances and the enormous risks that the owner takes. He kept calling me “Aniya”, which was reassuring when I was away from home and on the road. I was reminded of his warmth to a nobody like me when I saw this interview. Henceforth, he would always ask me if I had tea and food. The generosity of actors must be a common factor. I never got to write that feature because I joined Venad Pathrika soon after and then went to New Delhi and a life in journalism. Mohananchettan (Valiya Preman) passed away untimely after an accident. I have lost my notes and the black and white photographs I had taken when I spent one of my happiest and educative weeks on the road with Sangha Chetana and Swati Tirunal. But now I realise that some memories cannot be erased. The trip taught me life and people are often not what outward appearances suggest and that we must not pre-judge anyone. It also taught me to share - not just a bus seat but rooms, washrooms and food. And the value of listening to others and their stories. Everyone has a story. We must learn to listen.
