During the Portuguese colonial period in Sri Lanka, there was a strong and continuous relationship between Sri Lanka and Goa, India. Goa is the homeland of the Konkani people. There is evidence that Catholic priests and Konkani people came to Sri Lanka during and after the Portuguese period. These people later mixed with other ethnic groups in Sri Lanka, but some of their mixed-race descendants can still be identified by their surnames, such as "Konkani" or "Kongani."
