So according to this view the devotional opening stanza that we have been using is not for any reverence but for some convoluted description of words that is completely inaccurate in translation. This priest concludes his statements by stating that there is no need for devotional reverence to the Buddha but to understand the meaning of the words for each individuals enlightenment. He is very skilful in presenting a subtle message in this interpretation, that is that there is no need for the Buddha at all and that we too can achieve Buddhahood and attain those same exalted states of 'Na-Mo', 'Thassa', 'Bagavato', 'Arahato' and 'SammaSambuddha' for ourselves. What this charlatan does not explain is that this Stanza is more than just a devotional statement. It represents the highest qualities of the Buddha revering the Buddha beyond comparison to any individual in the past, present or the future. It distinguishes the Thathagatha as supernal, nonpareil and man par excellence. To this misguided priest I would like to remind him of the story of Mattakundali. When Mattakundali was about to die the Buddha appeared in his presence out of compassion to him. Mattakundali had not heard the Dhamma or even seen the Buddha before but he felt something in the awe-inspiring presence of the blessed one. He did not even have the strength to hold his hands together in veneration much less utter any words. His devotional reverence was purely mind-made and we all know how the story goes and how he ended up in the realm of the Devas. The similarity that this event and the stanza that we utter is the devotional reverence that we have for the Buddha. I would also point out that many a arahant and devas such as Sakka have uttered this stanza in veneration of the Buddha even after achieving nibbhana or marga phala respectively. This baseless claim made by this priest is yet another attempt to represent himself as the fount of all wisdom. Foolish priest -thou hast truly committed Parajika for causing a rift in the Sangha, thou art truly destined to a bad destination for many incalculable years to come for misrepresenting the Buddha. I truly feel pity for you and your followers and hope that you and them will achieve Samma-Ditti in the hear and now. Theruwansaranai .
