Being export-oriented does not necessarily mean that products will not be able to sell in the local market. If the procurement of oil products from the proposed refinery is cheaper than importing the same products elsewhere nobody can stop buying products from the proposed refinery.

Glad to see someone with a finance background active in SL politics. However, the financial analysis seen in various videos are from corporate perspective and not primarily from the perspective of a nation ( SL in this case) Agree with a existence of Shell companies and the assumption that there are sinister intentions behind that We were totally against selling Hambantopta port ( or Leasing). Yet , SL still owns around 30% of the combine entities in my understanding . While our ultimate aim should be to gain control ( own 51% or more) , any current analysis should be unbiased and should reflect the actual picture . This analysis is shamelessly prop western and lack the understanding of geopolitics and political economics. You can’t totally rely on western mainstream media folks (CNN hosts etc) to understand China, or any other nation perceived to be hostile in US perspective. It requires reference to academic work as well. There are striking differences in project cost between Chinese firms and western counterparts . That is the whole reason why nations choose to work with China. Sale of Hambantota port was a reckless act and not because the loan payment was a burden. The loan is still being paid by SL ports authority while the sales proceeds were used for other purposes.(not even to payoff debt incurred to build the port) You conveniently forgot to mention that 15% 30% of the profits will belongs to SL Its ridiculous to blame MR government for building it . Chinese capital was available for relatively cheaper cost ( can you tell me the cost to build with western funds then and now) and the mistake was selling it. It was not a debt trap. The debt trap was created when RW borrowed 12.5 billion in ISBs between 2015-2019 which can’t be attributed to any asset . Purchase of equipment’s from contracted nation ( China or Dutch) is a concern but we need to compare the same with international standards to come into a conclusion . As far as I remember , Mahaweli project had a similar structure with various donor nations employing engineers and machineries which resulted in most of the FX attributed o the projects ending up with the donor nations. China-US war in 2026 is simply childish. (It’s a separate discussion altogether ) .Relations between US and China are very complex but both are unlikely to start a war which might end up starting the 3rd world war . However, Chinese are building their strategic assets across Indian ocean, and we should do our best not to host them in this regard. In the same manner, we should reject Indian or US moves to gain strategic foothold. Further, comparing China to a nation run by a gang of thieves is pure , pure political immaturity. I would suggest you to discuss corporate finance more and be cautious about the topics which you are not that familiar with . We admire our democratic tradition while acknowledging the inherent disadvantages. Chinese model is based on centralized democracy. The authorities are elected in a pyramid structure. It is more democratic than a private corporation where officials are selected /appointed from the top. BOD select upper management, upper management select middle management ….etc .. However, it seems to be less democratic than te western style democracies like SL. Their economic model is a combination of SOEs , private owned enterprises and mix of both. Th model has successfully elevated the country to have the most companies in the fortune 500 list by 2022. Also, it has surpassed US as the largest economy ( in PPP) by 2015. We in SL have a lost o learn from both systems and our economic system is actually a refection of both . Therefore , I would suggest you to learn from western scholars in assessing China even when its considered an enemy . ( even if you are totally pro western) Ultimately , extreme right-wing , totally pro-western position is a sure recipe for failure even if you choose to run for office in the United Sates let alone SL.
