Kaikeyi Selfish or Affectionate..
We see this sudden transformation of Kaikeyi from being a loving mother to Shree Ram, a loving wife to King Dusharath and a loving sister to Kaushalya and Sumitra to being this selfish opportunist. Have you ever wondered why? Could a strong person like her change overnight due to a maid or was it for the higher good?
She was well aware of the promise that her husband had made to her father that her son would inherit the throne. She realised that by anointing Rama on the throne he would be tarnishing his image as a Raghuvanshi who always kept their word in all adversity. After-all they came from the lineage of King Harishchandra. To help him keep him keep his word, she used her other two boons given by him during the fight between asuras and devtas. This way she freed him from all his promises in one go thus reducing his karmic baggage.
The next question that comes to our mind is that her first boon of making her son, Bharat the king was good enough to take care of his promise. Then why send Lord Rama whom she loved dearly to exile. She was well aware of the curse King Dasharath had incurred upon himself as per which he was meant to die due to separation from his son. Therefore, in order to protect Lord Rama whom the King loved the most amongst his sons, from any ill fate and to fulfill the purpose of Rama Avatara, she sent him to exile. She took this drastic step knowing that her husband wouldn’t survive this shock and the world would call her names. She still went ahead as she knew that her husband had lived his life and the time had come to relieve him of his burden of promises and curse while protecting Rama who was still at the prime of his youth.
