Thank you EF, excellent analysis and presentation as ever. It is really a crime for one party or a leader to destroy individually a very important part of a city. It is not only Addis ABEBA residents that should be consulted but the entire people of the country whose views must be taken carefully. The complete destruction being undertaken is disgusting and it’s the action of a real dictatorial regime. If it were the people’s government it would take first all necessary precautions not to make anyone homeless, care about their social fabrics, sentiments, etc. Like witnessed in many other countries improvements in infrastructure and recent developments in technology would preserve the Piazza for thousands of years and everyone in the country would be happy. But the motives of the regime must be different from the people’s wishes and aspirations for their city. The regime’s desire lies in the destruction of history and civilisation of the Amhara leaders and people who established and constructed it first as the capital city of the country. Besides the need to reconstruct the city should be the result of the process of economic growth. Then the wealthy community would make the necessary developmental changes as needed.
