‘Citizenship stripping laws are unjust’ - Kamila Shamsie on the UK’s ‘racist’ immigration policy

In 1988, a 15-year-old Kamila Shamsie stayed up all night to watch Pakistan elect its first woman prime minister. Years later, and politics is still very much at the centre of the writer’s life - on and off the page.
Subscribe: bit.ly/C4_News_Subscribe
The Pakistani / British writer has long been a vocal critic of the UK government’s immigration and civil rights policies, and yet she only felt able to write Home Fire - which offers a piercing critique of Islamophobia within the British political establishment - after she became a citizen of the country.
Today on Ways to Change the World, Kamila Shamsie joins Krishnan Guru-Murthy to discuss her Pakistani upbringing, how politics shaped her writing and her view of Suella Braverman’s ‘racist’ immigration policy.

I don't know Ms Kamila and never heard of her before. However, I can confirm Benazir Bhutto was a dictator herself and stole billions from Pakistan so I stopped the interview when the interviewer asked democracy came back to Pakistan after Bhutto was elected. Zia Ul Haq did not have a penny in his bank account to bury him in his funeral and he never stole from the ppl.

What else can one expect? Kamila is from the Pakistani elite that is mostly secular, and overall much more pro-west to a detrimental, not positive, extent. Benazir's dad Zulfiquar Ali Bhutto was much more Pakistan-is-no-longer-the-slave-to-its-former-colonial-master than his daughter.

Obviously you are not a woman, so here's the fact. English women cannot walk down the street any more without being called white, Christian whores. @@joecater894 yet often it comes down to unwarranted fears and lack of care. Economically migrants are some of the most driven, able and already proven people who will add to the economy. Those in the greatest poverty or unfit or undriven to succeed typically can't afford or lack teh drive or ability to migrate. Social comes down to fear of the unknown and unwillingness to learn, logistical well they got there ask them to help solve any logistical problems they're probably smarter. Political migrants are always grateful to those who give them a chance and tend to vote for them, so politicians who think their other voters won't accept it typically have a low opinion of their voters and an inability to show leadership for positive change.

The uk will be in shortage of skilled works and will surely affect the economy if they tell them that they won’t grant them citizenship. This is the sole problem of the UK government. They should either say “you won’t get citizenship just come and work here” or “come here work here contribute for x years and we will get you citizenship” but if they promise in the beginning then breach their contract, the government should be blamed for their dishonesty

I've never heard or read any argument against immigration that I found to be persuasive. I think that the more people we have in our society and economy, then the more creative minds we have, meaning we increase our chances of those minds creating new knowledge, which in turn benefits everyone by translating into wealth. The idea that the more people we have the less resources there are to go around seems to me to be ignorant of the fact that any economy is dependent on knowledge, not resources per se. And on top of this mistake, the people who argue against immigration always seem to focus on the ethnicity of people, as if that characteristic is somehow fundamental to what they are. The only thing that is fundamental to what a person is essentially is that they are creative beings capable of universal explanation. The colour of their backsides is irrelevant. I just can't escape the conclusion that the people arguing against immigration are basically racist. I'm always open to persuasion, so if you disagree with my points, please explain yourself.
@NeilEvans-xq8ik
@NeilEvans-xq8ik Год назад
I am disappointed, but not at all surprised, that the right-wingers in this comments section have failed to present any kind of argument in favour of their perspective. When I said that i am open to persuasion i genuinely meant it! I really appreciate your response, though, which has certainly given me pause for thought. I do agree that climate change could ultimately lead us into a situation in which immigration does in fact become a problem of overwhelmed resources in any particular (and probably Western) nation. However, I think that the solution to that problem is to plough as much by way of resources that we currently have available to us into fostering the creative potential of all human beings, whether here in the West or in the global south. To my mind, this is the only hope we have of being able to create the knowledge necessary to mitigate the effects of climate change that would cause the problems you highlighted. This is an infinitely better solution to this problem than to suggest, as some seem to be, that we need to artificially curtail human economic activity and even population (!) in order to supposedly 'restore' some perceived 'ecological harmony', which I think could be just as destructive a policy in the long term as just letting the problem of climate change go unsolved. To reiterate my previous point, we depend on knowledge, not resources per se. If we could just recognise this distinction, as a species, then there would be no economic 'global south' before long because the progress taking place in the West in the past few centuries would go truly global finally, and so there would be no need for economic migration. And then we would be best placed to deal with the problem of climate change, along with any other problems this universe might throw at us. Thank you for your response. I will continue to mull it over!

@@NeilEvans-xq8ik I agree with you. Your thoughts remind me of a book I have read recently. Steven Pinkers “Enlightenment now “. @NeilEvans-xq8ik
@NeilEvans-xq8ik Год назад
I would like to believe that people can and will find ways to coexist peacefully and fruitfully. It's just another problem to be solved, and all problems can be solved. There are plenty of historical precedents for this, and not just in Western societies. Think of the Islamic Umma, in which people of different cultures and races were united in mutual trust and respect, for example. In my home city, there is now a great variety of people from all over the world where there used to be, when I was younger, just white people with only a small number of people from other ethnic backgrounds. And it's just not a problem! Far from it, in fact. Everyone is just getting on with their lives and no-one is hating or hurting anyone else, except perhaps with the odd and very rare exception. I haven't read Pinker's book yet (not that particular one, anyway), but I might do now that you have mentioned it. My own thoughts in my previous comments here were largely informed by the works of David Deutsch, and especially his two books 'The Fabric of Reality' and 'The Beginning of Infinity: Explanations That Transform The World'. An easy way into it would be to check out Brett Hall's channel here on RU-vid; he doesn't get many views, bless him, and he's a bit of a Tory-boy unfortunately, but he's great at explaining these ideas. I'd highly recommend!

You're parroting Liberal commentators on the BBC and worse channel 4. Sceptical views towards large-scale immigration are legitimate and rooted in real concerns about a UK population that is expanding much too quickly for public services, the NHS, the job market, housing and schools to cope Millions of people are also worried that society is absorbing far too many people, far too quickly, for effective assimilation to occur something that has been supported by the findings of a reportby the government’s former integration czar. There is nothing racist about being concerned about high immigration when this is the driver of 80% of the UK’s rapid population growth. Almost 10% of social housing in England is occupied by non-UK nationals. In London this figure is around 20%. These are migrants who have not been here long enough to become British citizens usually five years or who have chosen not to do so. Immigration causes massive issues not for the immigrants; but for the indigenous community amongst whom they come and are still coming.

It's always interesting to hear people of colour discuss their rights to holding western citizenship and using the term racist towards every policy which does not benefit them directly - or maintain a high status to which they are accustomed. (If you're immigrating you're usually wealthy and highly skilled) @1:50 "citizenship... affords you certain rights and gives you a passport and I have that for two countries. I think people should get as many of them as possible and have as many rights in as many places" As an entitled, privileged, woman-of-colour, let me take a moment to educate you on RACIST citizenship laws. Most Asian countries do not allow immigration or foreigners to hold their citizenship. Most Asian countries pass citizenship down through bloodlines, not oaths. Yet, many women from these Asian countries will flock to Canada or the United States to give birth so their children can have western citizenship simply by being born on these countries' soil. Is that same opportunity afforded to westerners in their countries? Nope! Most Asian countries are not signatories to the UN convention on refugees. This means when fleeing persecution and an individual enters an Asian country, they're permitted to stay so long as it's in refugee camps. They are not housed, given health care or permitted to integrate into society. Yet alone obtain citizenship. China and India are two examples of countries, which do not permit individuals to hold dual citizenship. Yet nearly every western country allows their citizens to hold dual - it not more - citizenships. This is racist, right? As a holder of dual citizenship, British and Pakistani, could you enlighten us on what are Pakistan's: Immigration policy? Citizenship laws? Refugee protection laws? Jus soli (birth on soil)? Once you learn about this you'll truly understand racism. But it won't impact you, so maybe that's not racist? And finally, if any of these countries were to become so enlightened and permit immigration would the countries themselves permit these immigrants to serve in government? So when you say "get as many [passports] as possible and have as many rights in as many places", what you're saying is as a woman-of-colour you want as man western passports, to which you feel you're entitled. Are you concerned with the lack of citizenship afford in Asian countries to non-asians?

Britain is a teetering country. I'm English and my ancestry traces back generations, but my granddaughter was refused right to reside here because her father, who now has another family overseas, is South African. This is a judgement carelessly handed out by a bureaucrat at the Home Office according to some policy they have not been honest enough to explain, that has caused untold misery in my family. Yet I watch people flooding across our open borders with the aim of shattering my culture and overwhelming the economy of one of the smallest countries in the world. Funny how I was raised thinking I was a citizen of the world, and 2 generations later my family is discriminated against in favour of strangers. Perhaps we deserve it, I dont know. But I find it a betrayal. Have lived and worked in several countries. Believe me everyone in the world is racists or colour conscious. White Brits think that Racism is a bigger crime than murder. In Africa they call each other the black one . In India Pakistan China and all the developing world skin colour does matter. I comment on this from personal experience as Indian born and livve in the UK

Have just commented that Racism is not only a U.K. Issue but a world issue. Have experienced it in India, Middle East, Africa,China Russia America and Asia. Stop making preposterous comments. In fact my Nigerian friends always say that once they land at Heathrow they do not get harassed by Immigration officials in the U.K. Am talking about CEOs too.

Strip all non-indigenous of any visa or other paperwork. Brexit means Brexit
@mikhailfoster9331
@mikhailfoster9331 Год назад
Firstly, Brexit had nothing to do with removing British citizens or residents of non-EU origin or preventing Non-EU individuals from coming to the UK - Brexit was about no longer being a member of the EU. Secondly, if your intention is to have all 'non-indigenous' removed (I presume that is code for non-white, non-english as first/only language speaking people), my question is how would you go about that? How far back would someone have to trace their lineage to be deemed as 'indigenous'- back to 1066? Before 1066? Roman Times? Prior to the 1500's when Britain started taking to the seas and pillaging the 'new world' and in so doing bringing back people from those conquered lands as 'oddities and trophies'? My other question is practically, how would you plan to fill the immense level of vacancies in critical roles such as healthcare, transport, food and farming industry, education, fire services, military, civil service, aviation and research that your forced exodus of 'non-indigenous' people from the UK would cause, as if we go by what has been happening to farming and hospitality sectors thus far since Brexit happened and hundreds of thousands of EU citizens have left, the UK would collapse within months after forcing all 'non-indigenous' people to leave.
