We need a 'The Thing' Rewatchables.

The deleted Subway scene was filmed in Atlanta's MARTA... On the DVD, there's a director's commentator track where Carpenter talks about how it was brand new, and that station wasn't even open yet.

One of my favorite movies ever. I remember stumbling upon it when I was around 18 or 19. Everything from the plot, charcters and score was just captivating. The point about plot points being hinted on but never fully explained made the movie so much more enjoyable. The Duke's rise to power, Cabbie, Brain and Maggie could have all had an extra 10 minutes of screen time but the relatively little you got left you wanting more.

The opening theme music Escape from New York is one of the best film scores!

East Saint Louis is the hell-hole in National Lampoon's Vacation.

I know I am 2 years late, but glad I came across this episode. The only thing I would suggest is watching Blu-ray extras before you discuss. The gladiator fight takes place in MSG. I know it looks nothing like it the actual MSG, I this scene was discussed on a commentary or one of the other Blu-ray extras. Kurt Russell also took a beating during the shooting of these scenes. Great job though and look forward to catching up on the rest of the Rewatchable episodes.

Love John Carpenter! Love the music. Love Kurt Russel. The film has its flaws, but who cares?! Love it!

They should make two prequels: 'Operation: Leningrad' and 'Operation: Siberia'. Have Kurt Russell play an old Snake Plissken narrating his memories to a journalist or law enforcement official. Have Kurt's son, Wyatt Russell play a young Plissken in flahbacks (Wyatt's an exact lookalike of his dad). Prequels should include showing Plissken's parents getting killed by the U.S. Police Force. Plissken joining the U.S. military and working his way up the ranks to Special Forces. Him meeting all his acquaintances during his tours of duty (Brain, Fresno Bob, Taylor, Carjack Malone, etc.). Show him losing his eye and getting discouraged with the politics of military life and, as a result, planning the Federal Reserve Depository robbery with Taylor. And finally, show his capture. It's still not too late!

"The Ultimate Warrior" is a Yul Brenner vehicle identical with a plot similar to this. Not as enjoyable, but comparable.

It's a glider, not a plane. They explain it. So no sound. Gliders were used in WWII to drop soldiers into occupied France.

Really good movie but not top 5

I just watched this on Amazon Prime. The premise is great but the execution is poor! This movie was low budget and acted bad. I can understand in 1981 this might have been one of the first modern action movies but it was a waste of 90 minutes for me. The score is generic AF!

Sorry lads, this is nowhere near the top 5 action flicks. Serrano is a top contributor as well, I’ve all his books. But this movie doesn’t touch the best action films. Good score though.
