If they were the best 4wd channel in the world, they'd swap out the Mitsubishi 4D56 engine for Hyundai's D4BF, which is their licensed version of the same engine with some major improvements. Add a boost controller and you have a Delica that can actually tow something up a hill.

Love these things! Went across Australia three times in a '98 Delica as a kid, fond memories of sticking my head out the sunroof on 4x4 trails, and watching DVDs on a TV roped between the two front seats. Also one of the first cars I learned to drive in. Dad is doing a full engine rebuild on it now and its probably a forever car for him.

Welcome to the club boys! Marty that "tick tick tick" noise you here when going to start the car is a common and very easy fix. Just back from the driver's seat underneath the car is a large black box. Underneath the cover is two smaller boxes that are apart of the rear A/C. You'll find that inside there are plastic cogs. The cog you want to clock the opposite way to how it is sitting is one on the bottom that is shaped like a quarter of a circle.

Hey nice work on sorting out those oil leaks. This sort of thing is very challenging for your average weekend warrior who has to drive it on Monday. One very small thing to change, pull off the axle caps on the front and change the circlip (it's around 30-32mm). It loses tension over time and eventually lets go, leaving you without drive to your front axles, and also the stub axle flops around and grinds the gear in the hub. Very simple preventative maintenance to do. (Delica owner for 8 years)

I love the Delicas because of how many mods are available for them. I own a 1998 2.8L TD. I've taken it to K'gari (Fraser) without any mods except bash plates and never got bogged once. Since then I've put in a 2" lift kit, I'm running ex-Pajero rims and tyres (31s), have swapped out the front bumper for a bullbar and winch, and have installed a snorkel. Diff locks and breathers are on the list and possibly a Cape York trip in the future.

You got the V6 variant. I used to own a '97 L400 Skyline LWB variant with the 2.8 Diesel . I loved the thing to death. Speaking of death, I cried tears of joy when my 4 kids were born, but the one and only time I cried, really cried from a broken heart was the day the missus ran into the back of a GT Skyline and destroyed it. I never took the car serious off roading but I did take it bush a lot and the beaches fishing. There was nothing better than driving right up to the waters edge, sliding the passenger door, rotating the captain seat 90' and sit in absolute comfort with the rod out the door. The Skyline was very top heavy with the glass roof, so serious 4x4 tracks were not a safe option especially with the narrow track of the Delica, but laying down in the back at the camp site looking at the stars was awesome.

Love it! Mitsi V6s can be a bit of a pain to work on and may have their notorious leaky problems, but they are bulletproof and as long as they still have oil they won’t let you down. I have an NL paj converted from a 3.5 to a 380 motor (you guys helped to inspire it as a big block swap) which might be a bit tougher to swap in place of the 3.0 in the Delica but you should definitely do it- it’d make heaps more power and be much better to drive.

Ah, guys! Brilliant! Had a Series 2 Delica (same as yours, but diesel- short wheelbase, low roof) for a few years. Lifted, heavy duty suspension, adjustable shocks, air-locker, snorkel etc. (including necessary upgrades like better radiator, oil cooler etc.). Took it to Cape York (did half the OTT easily, I got sick of the crowds halfway through!), through deserts, moderately hard tracks in the Vic High Country. It performed beautifully (well, after the head was replaced, hence the cooling upgrades😲). It towed my 5.8m boat around easily (well, slowly uphill) including to Darwin and back to Adelaide. It is such a great vehicle, flexible, great to modify, brilliant to camp out of or in. Thanks for bringing back memories, I loved that car!

Lots of people get Delicas and take them up to Cape York thinking thats an adventure. I kept going north! I have mine in the interior highlands on Papua New Guinea and its great. The roads here are not good, and the Delica can carry the family around, go anywhere. Mine was imported by someone else, sight unseen, and was NOT in good condition on arrival. Off the top of my head I've done : new radiator, water pump, expansion bottle, thermostat and coolant. All new filters and fluids. Replaced that harmonic balancer. Removed the injection pump to change seals, repaired the timing plate that interfaces the pump to the timing gears. Replaced rocker cover gaskets. All new tires (Maxxis Bravo MT). All belts changed. FLushed transmission. Changed tension pulley. New inner and outer tie rods. New Sway Bar Links all corners. New Shocks all corners. New glow plugs. I am currently waiting for new front brake rotors and a new steering rack. I had very little mechanical know how before owning this car, but do to necessity of my location I have been learning how to do most of this myself, and its been very rewarding.

my '96 Chamonix - the real Delica models - leaks like a sieve, sits high - 2 inch lift on top - torsion bars turned tight and land rover 8in springs in the back - rebuilt 2800 4M40 diesel engine with 50,000 kms on it, new everything under the bonnet, room for the Marshalls, Ampeg, drums and PA and all the equipment is Robber's Dog's Bandvan . . and its cool - just had to get that in there - any Deli after 97 is for poofters and the diesels are the boys . .

Mitsubishi Australia SERIOUSLY missed out on locally selling these. All they brought were the Panel Van (Mitsy Express). Soo good your covering this car, because if I couldnt afford the Kei truck, this was a close second to use as a All rounder Camper. Thank god we have soo many of these in the country and support for them. We need to bring more, before the price goes up and when the American's can get the opportunity to import them. I would probably get the more powerful v6 version or diesel so it can handle more weight.

Hello from Canada. I have been watching every episode of every build for years and years. I might have blown a load in excitement seeing this because I just bought an 02 L400 PD6W in November. It's a 1:48 seconds into the episode and I had to comment as Marty is looking at one almost identical to mine. So f'n excited for this series 😄😄😄😄😄😄😄😄😄😄

Dudes ... its called a Delly Car! And one of the good tings about them is that they are all Pajero (Shogun) running gear so parts are available everywhere. Also loads of extras like ladders and roof accessories and lights etc.

We had a 97 2.8l deisel long wheel base Delica, which we took on multiple trips with the kids, heaps of room. We loved it, it was great off road on the sand. Then we got a camper trailer..... and yeah they struggle to tow so now we have a Pajero. Thanks for the nostalgia, Worlds best 4wd channel.

I had a delica back in the day, used to have pajeros and shoguns too, transplanted the 2.8Td in the Delica with the 3.5 V6 MIVEC petrol from my SWB shogun. Was a manual too, with the 3.5 V6 petrol it was epic. raised the suspension, stuck 33" muddies on it with a 2.5" body lift and that thing went everywhere. Was gonna put 35's on it but never got round to it. Best thing it was based on the pajero chassis so had tons of parts for it. Wish I never got rid :(

All the leaks and o rings gives me flashbacks of restoring my diesel excursion! It’s the same color and I got a screaming good deal on it just like you did the delica! Strangely maybe not but I dig that little people mover! 8 passengers in whats half the size of my tank, I love it! Looking forward to this series!

Saw a big group of them on Fraser Island a week or so ago. We were driving down to meet the barge and it was a case of 'Oh there's a Delica!', and another one, and another one, dozens of them!

The delica, the van version of the Pajero and triton, the typical Tongan family wagon 😂 Also I know with the older Pajeros you can run factory gq/gu springs in the rear lift the torsion bars and install older hilux shocks for a bit of lift
