Programme Note:
This is a soundscape and solo piano work from Gotō commissioned and performed by pianist Kimihiro Yasaka, who currently lives in Montreal, Canada, and Canadian-born, Kyushu-based composer Daryl Jamieson.
Gotō has been designated a World Heritage Site and has a unique culture. It is the departure point of Japanese envoys to the Tang Dynasty (including Kukai), has a deep history including Jōmon ruins, the unique natural sounds of the Gotō archipelago and, in particular, the ‘orasho’ of the Hidden Christians, making it an interesting place from a musical perspective. This is the second movement of this new immersive work for piano, audio and video, ‘Gotō (Archipelago)’, based on sound and video recordings made in Gotō over more than a year.

Music and the Non-Human

Series Concept:
This year's concert series ‘Music and the Non-Human’ is part of a three-year research project that draws on Japanese philosophy and aesthetics rooted in premodern, non-Western ontologies to interpret the relationship between human and non-human sounds from a new perspective.
The composers explore their relationship with nature and spiritual elements, drawing inspiration from pre-modern philosophy and nō theatre works. Inspiration from nature, field recordings and contemporary music with traditional instruments intersect to define meaningful ways of creating, listening to, sharing (and discussing) music in unstable times.
