Wait! I forgot to mention that Kazunori Yamauchi himself is a character in the movie. I’m pretty sure the actor who plays him expresses zero emotion whatsoever in any scene he appears. I’ll be disappointed if we don’t see some ‘Live Kazunori Reaction’ memes from it

I liked the part when Kaz tells the protagonist "It's Gran Turismin' time!" but then David Harbour shows up and says "no, old man! You're the tourist here and I'm not giving you a trophy!" and then Kaz quietly leaves to fuel his need for speed as a driver in San Francisco. Truly one of the movies of all time

The best part was when Sarah told Jann to take a deep breath and try again so he threw his steering wheel at her.

Not actually based on the real Gran Turismo experience, and not actually based on the first GT ACADEMY winner (Lucas O.) What could go wrong?

whenever I first heard the plot synopsis I got a pretty nostalgic feeling... because as a kid I downloaded that GT Academy demo game while waiting for GT6 to release, and I always wondered how any "real" winners of the Academy ended up!

Can you describe how you felt when Jann's character literally found an extra gear to shift into and mashing the accelerator even harder to make that overtake? We don't need Hollywood to validate video games as a medium and if they choose to adapt video games (in general) we ought to hold them to account and to a higher standard. They've done stuff like this for over 30 years, just because it's always been done this way, doesn't mean it ought to stay that way. It's a very similar argument to that of the lack of innovation when it comes to the GT game since GT3...

I love Ford v Ferrari but Gran Turismo is one of the worst films I've ever watched. I almost stood up and walked out when he closed 7 seconds gap to the lead in a single lap.

I enjoyed this movie and i think its pretty good, what i truly hated (and this happens with many car movies) is the super unrealistic things that happen, i dont care if you overexaggerate things in an action movie but when they show him stepping on the accelerator and just overtaking someone in the straight like it was nothing or he just takes a sub optimal long line on a corner and that makes him go 35 kmh faster than his rivals, i really wonder what were they thinking. I know its more difficult to generate tension or excitement when being slightly faster over a long time is what makes the difference but those moments just feel really bad if you know racing in the slightest, what have they been doing the whole race? Just half stepping on the gas so they dont run out of fuel?

Saw this movie with my girlfriend last week. For what its worth, she did enjoy it. *SPOILER WARNING* I thought it was a decent movie. I wouldn't say I'm disappointed - probably in part because I haven't been playing car sims for a couple of years at this point. Anyways I agree with your take on the movie. Its clear that they wanted to make a movie that appealed to non gamers and non racing fans, however that is a bit confusing considering the heavy use of the game Gran Turismo which, while it is to some degree mainstream, its still a bit of a niche within a niche. The immediate reference to the real story is likely because a lot of "normies" will find the idea of a gamer actually making it as a racing driver totally ludicrous, so I understood why they did it. Anyways the movie to me in terms of appealing to the sim racer or gran turismo gamer in me basically did absolutely nothing. I totally agree that it essentially has nothing to do with the game. The good: The movie is well made technically speaking, its a classic story that is paced pretty well. I thought the actors did an overall good job. I totally agree about the racing in terms of the shots they used and sound effects. I also thought it was a pretty cool "gimmick" to use HUD overlay effects to give information about what was going on in the race, although it was a time a bit confusing, like "wait did he finish in 4th or is he just placed 4th right now?" lol. Anyways in terms of story, I think we have to remember that since its based on a true story and it tried being reasonably true to it, thats what we get. I think this movie is probably a lot better to watch in cinemas than at home unless you have a stonkin' home theater, because a lot of the fun was in all the engine screaming and testosterone boosting shots and sounds. The bad: While I did enjoy the racing videography and sound design, the races weren't like super interesting to watch. Probably because there were never any real strategy or any sense of like actual racing challenges. As you mentioned, there were some pretty ridiculous stuff - the most egregious for me was the downshift passing and the "oh my god I've played Circuit de la Sarthe so many times on Gran Turismo I've invented an optimal line" thing which was pretty dumb. I also really didn't like the over the top "Gran Turismo is so realistic its actually insane you guys", or the Sony product placement (hurr he uses a Sony Walkman (TM) which is old, so lets go splash some cash on a new Sony Walkman product which nobody actually needs anymore lolol) At the end of the day, I enjoyed the movie. Its like a 6.5-7 for me, which is not bad. Its refreshing to see a car movie with somewhat good racing scenes.

Okay, if you don't care about the story, the action and racing is really fun to watch. In my opinion atleast. Admittedly I don't always carry high standards since movies these days seem super hit or miss. Just saying.

Hi @Roflwaffle, would love to get your thoughts on the crew motorfest's behind the wheel videos, before the game launches next month. I understand the game is not doing anything revolutionary for the genre, but I personally really appreciate the focus on fun the dev team are taking, their approach to player input, while still capturing authentic car culture... unlike another game we won't mention. From the footage I feel like the visual realism vs gameplay balance has been met quite well.

seems like its mostly an okay movie, I'll check it out at some point not expecting too much and I'll probably enjoy it more that way.

I actually remember competing in the gt Academy when they were doing their in-game trials. I made it to the top 1000 before I was too slow to make the next cut. I also remember the huge mess that was made out of the event on the Indy Road course because the top guys were track cutting to shave time off. I still have it installed on my ps3, actually. The movie isn't on my list of movies to watch, but if I scroll past it one day looking for some background noise, I'll pop it on.

I absolutely loved the Gran Turismo game references in the movie! Moon Over The Castle, the menu sounds, the cameos... overall great movie in my opinion.

The whole time i was waiting for Gran to say some dramatic shit like "This Gran does Turismo" and claims her birthright of the Turismo family, yet that moment never came, severely lacking in the Grandma department

They should make a For za movie with Microsoft seeing all the money Sony is making with Gran/For Turismo/Za and deciding they want in on it too, then assembling the best team their endless money pit can buy and then trying to sell their greed as a similar passion project with there own equally passionate Asian /American kaz version, creator and spokesperson. They could even Make a Horizon movie, replacing Grandma Turismo with Test Drive Unlimited, the posibilites are endless

I do think they could have made a movie based on the experience Sony wants you feel when playing GT7... So I would make it like the hotwheels/need for speed movies and take place in GT7 where you follow a young driver get his first car then become chapion... And yes have him grind the same race to get a classic car only for it to sit unused in his garage for the rest of the movie as he can't sell it.

I wished they used the real game and playstation console the dude used (I think it was GT 4 or maybe 5) instead of using GT 7 and a PS5.

I enjoy older fast and the furious films more than modern racing films that try to make out they're authentic. at least fast and the furious (at least the first 2 which i've seen) don't take themselves seriously. people should take a leaf out of porsche's "road to leman" series, you don't need to be a brainiac to understand what's happening there, but they guide you through some basics of what a racing weekend is like while it being thoroughly entertaining

this was one of my favourite racing movies of all time. gt fans are just so jaded that they will get rock hard to hate on any GT ip at the moment

Swear the GT Academy was on TV?

Overall the movie was fine, but there is one aspect which is truly unacceptable, Moon Over the Castle ISN'T IN THE MOVIE AT ALL, not even over the end credits. (if it is I didn't hear it) I'm SO OUTRAGED that I'll go to Sony Pictures HQ and demand they rerelease the movie to rectify this huge fault, call it the Kaz Cut.

It's probably fine. I'll see it on streaming services I'm not that interested in it. The trailers were fine. My stance is a bit different after your impression. Do I think it's better than other motorsports movies not sure. Driver/sponsors part of plots. I guess like R Racing/Toca/Grid to compare. Tropey/ok but still. The love interest ah, a checklist knew it. Garbage. What a waste of her role as an actress too. Disappointing. Appealing to an audience for nothing. I don't mind that sometimes it works but this movie doesn't need it compared to other shows and movies. Why a motorsports movie with romance. Let alone some other life moments, sponsors/business, racing or training or whatever that's more relevant to the movie. IT and race drivers not getting no girls with that sort of appeal only checklists in shows and movies. XD I don't mind fiction but it is supposed to be realistic so it's kind of awkward to say it should or shouldn't. The movie is to sell GT7 we all know that but still is yeah. Still better than Last of Us being pointed fingers at modern game violence as a dumb moment to sell it in Pixels that was weird. Really weird of Sony to do that then. I don't care for Last of Us but it always stuck out to me. Of the retro and modern game aspect let alone a wink to it of all Sony IPs they could have to make a point/advertise it. Kaz in the movie makes sense I guess it is relevant towards GT Academy, meeting the man behind the games and all that. Not just oh self insert it is trying to be realistic after all. But if ghe credits position is fhe cade I mean besides being fhr director od the games he isn't a core character then ofhers. Some.can have an ego the higher they are in places of power. We don't know how he is in work just specific segments of showing the games off thats it. But the oh Cars movie McQueen drifts. But the brake skill in GT movie hmmmm. Ah tuning you can't do that in real life besides racing standards let alone oh some physics and game mechanics are different or non-existent of real life or games differences yeah. Game and simulation laugh for sure there. It's painful. You can take it either way of oh the difference between game and real life then a bad thing. I think it can make sense but is it a fault/lack of research I don't know. The games can have limitations besides lack of research or yes movie staff pointing fingers at games. We know the staff may appreciate but some do not care about games at all or get games. It's possible even if in secret. Control over a project happens. The sounds you expect some quality there so that's good. Camera angles in the trailer seem good. CG who knows. It's why I don't take motorsports or rally seriously in games. I would get frustrated with the AI too much. In a film tension and so on sure. Circuits hmm. Also reverse if that happened which doesn't happen only in games sometimes. For motorsports movies yeah but it's for casuals. For motorsports fans sure. I'm not a fan I don't watched motorsports I have been or seen some on tv not my thing. I appreciate them. I have seen 2 movies on it but still. I enjoy games more. What I can get out of them to play. Reviews are going to be much, it's by the book sure but at the same time who is reviewing it motorsports fans? Generic critics not into racing or games or anything of artistic elements or hate for game movies besides their quality anyway or are for ball sports more then car movies. Action movies and more. Game/entertainment outlets saying about the film seem fine I guess too. Not bothered reading them really.

This movie made me buy a PS4 Pro, GT Sport, and GT7...

I feel like a better movie would have have been made from taking oneof the millions of GT players, or simracers of any sim, and throwing them in a car and they wow everyone and drive like they'd been doing it for years... oh wait. That already happened IRL, a ton of times. Hell, look at SuperGT. Guy is in the VLN. Look at the countless GT3 drivers across the globe who started as just casual simracers with too much money. They told an interesting story, but they kind of took the whole sports side of things to the extreme IMO. Good movie, just not going to be on my rewatch list.

I don't understand how motorracing movies can get away with lacking realism- Yeah, it could be helpful to entertain non-petrolheads, but... do non-petrolheads even go to watch such movies in the first place? I went to see LeMans '66 with a group of mates united by the common story of: "my girlfriend/wife didn't want to watch a car film".

You forgot to mention that if Gran Turismo does well, it could fund District 10, the long awaited District 9 sequel. If you haven't seen it, District 9 is a fantastic political commentary about South Africa under Apartheid, though under the guise of being literally the best alien invasion film in history.

I think it's brilliant to clarify GT being not a game, but a simulation. Games try to deliver something fun, engaging, and/or satisfying and taylor their mechanics and systems to fit to what they're building. They'd not put immensely expensive vehicles in that are absolutely useless. A simulator however tries to be as close the real thing as possible with little concern for what the players would like. Of course a car that costs millions irl will have the same price ingame. Also who'd even want to race that, it's way too valuable to risk damaging it. Unless you want to take a picture you better keep it in that garage where its safe.

Haven't sat and endured the entire movie, but as far as the trailers go, it looks like a complete Cheese Fest, with C/D class actors/actress' I hate Cheese 😏

Are we really supposed to believe that a GT player turned racing driver wouldn't be suggesting to his engineers that they simply just look up the best tuning build for the car on the internet?

The most annoying part of this movie is the concept itself - Jann wasn't the first GT Academy guy, he knew what he was getting into, LUCAS ORDÓÑEZ' story would've been way better because he truly didn't know WTF was gonna happen. I'm 100% sure they chose Jann "because BLACK GUY" as both guys come from similar backgrounds (failed-ish karting kids)

I also watched the Movie last friday (in my case through illegal methods because it's not worth for me to pay for watching that) and i felt it was too basic and also synthetic and very straight forward in how they tried to tell the story and even really exagerated in some parts of it, they tried to tell to the people that Videogames can be real but the way they did it caused it the opposite effect of what they intended. Honestly the overall Movie was really bad and was a poor excuse for Sony to make some quick cash (which as of now the Movie is financially failing, on it's first weekend it only made around $10.5 Million out of it's $100 Million Budget)

The one time I saw an ad for this movie it had a shot of a GT3 Nissan doing a Mercedes CLR and I sorta lost all my interest in an instant :')
