Former Labor prime minister Paul Keating has addressed the National Press Club, blasting the Albanese government’s “incompetence” for the AUKUS agreement.
@@SteeleFalcon Your kidding aren’t you? I don’t ever remember Paul Keating denying legitimate election results and inciting a riot that resulted in the death 5 people! They have nothing in common at all
Tell him to go to china if he likes china so much Australia wants to be smart and put a defence in place What if another country attacks What if china attacks Can he GUARANTEE nobody will attack australia I have NEVER seen someone talking as dumb as this bloke Biden has dementia but is 1 billion times smarter then keating
Oh that was delicious. Thoroughly enjoyed it. Too bad Peter Hartcher from SMH wasn’t there. Keating would have torn him to shreds on behalf of Australia.
100% agree with Paul, only Australia paying, US/UK cash in. Why we spending $368 billions to help US rather than spending on education, building new school, paying teacher/ nurse, which is meaningful for Australian tax payer.
Security is meaningful for Australia now it’s how you spend it which is meaningful For $368,000,000,000 you can liberate West New Guinea & Australia could be completely independent and not go to America’s wars
Was he replying to journalists are you sure? I though he was replying to clowns, "I have a brain I read maybe something you should need to do also" hahaha

No. It's called smart. Australia does not have nuclear submarines. Australia needs to expand and build up its defense forces, including addressing our naval capabilities. Australia uses money gained from trade to buy nuclear submarines. Very simple stuff.
Sharing below a piece on recent Chinese history, written by a Malaysian RU-vidr: I’m from Malaysia. China has traded with Malaysia for 2000 years. In those years, they had been the world’s biggest powers many times. Never once they sent troops to take our land. China's admiral Zhenghe came to Malacca five times, in gigantic fleets, and a flagship eight times the size of Christopher Columbus’ flagship, Santa Maria. He could have seized Malacca easily, but he did not. In 1511, the Portuguese came. In 1642, the Dutch came. In the 18th century the British came. We were colonised by each, one after another. When China wanted spices from India, they traded with the Indians. When they wanted gems, they traded with the Persian. They didn’t take lands. The only time China expanded beyond their current borders was in Yuan Dynasty, when Genghis and his descendants Ogedei Khan, Guyuk Khan & Kublai Khan concurred China, Mid Asia and Eastern Europe. But Yuan Dynasty, although being based in China, was a part of the Mongolian Empire. Then came year 1800, the Century of Humiliation. Britain smuggled opium into China to dope the population, a strategy to turn the trade deficit around, after the British could not find enough silver to pay the Qing Dynasty in their tea and porcelain trades and the doping went on for over 30 years. After the opium warehouses were burned down and ports were closed by the Chinese in ordered to curb opium, the British started the Opium War I, which China lost. Hong Kong was forced to be surrendered to the British in a peace talk (Nanjing Treaty). The British owned 90% of the opium market in China, during that time, Queen Victoria was the world’s biggest drug baron. The remaining 10% was owned by American merchants from Boston. Many of Boston’s institutions were built with profit from opium. After 12 years of Nanjing Treaty, the West started getting really really greedy. The British wanted the Qing government: 1. To open the borders of China to allow goods coming in and out freely, and tax free. 2. Make opium legal in China. Insane requests, Qing government said no. The British and French (with supports from the US), started Opium War II with China, which again, China lost. The Anglo-French military raided the Summer Palace, and threatened to burn down the Imperial Palace, the Qing government was forced to pay with ports, free business zones, 300,000 kilograms of silver and Kowloon was taken. Since then, China’s resources flew out freely through these business zones and ports. In the subsequent amendment to the treaties, Chinese people were sold overseas to serve as labor. In 1900, China suffered attacks by the 8-National Alliance. These 8-Robbers were: Empire of Japan, Russian Empire, British Empire (including India), France, USA, Germany, Italy and Austria-Hungary. Innocent Chinese civilians in Peking (Beijing now) were murdered, buildings were destroyed & women were raped. The Imperial Palace was raided, and treasures ended up in museums like the British Museum in London and the Louvre in Paris. In late 1930s China was occupied by the Japanese in WWII. Millions of Chinese died during the occupancy. 300,000 Chinese died in Nanjing Massacre alone. Mao brought China together again from the shambles. There were peace and unity for some time. But Mao’s later reign saw sufferings and deaths from famine and power struggles. Then came Deng Xiao Ping and his infamous “black-cat and white-cat” story. His preference in pragmatism than ideologies transformed China. This thinking allowed China to evolve all the time to adapt to the actual needs in the country, instead of rigidly bounded to ideologies. It also signified the death of Communism in actually practice in China. The current Socialism+Meritocracy+Market Economy model fits the Chinese like gloves, and it propels the uprise of China. Singapore has a similar model, and has been arguably more successful than Hong Kong, because Hong Kong being gateway to China, was riding on the economic boom in China, while Singapore had no one to gain from. In just 30 years, the CPC have moved 800 millions of people out from poverty. The rate of growth is unprecedented in human history. They have built the biggest mobile network, by far the biggest high speed rail network in the world, and they have become a behemoth in infrastructure. They made a fishing village called Shenzhen into the world’s second largest technological centre after the Silicon Valley. They are growing into a technological power house. It has the most elaborate e-commerce and cashless payment system in the world. They have launched exploration to Mars. The Chinese are living a good life and China has become one of the safest countries in the world. The level of patriotism in the country has reached an unprecedented height. For all of the achievements, the West has nothing good to say about it. China suffers from intense anti-China propagandas from the West. Western Media used the keyword “Communist” to instil fear and hatred towards China. Everything China does is negatively reported. They claimed China used slave labor in making iPhones. The truth was, Apple was the most profitable company in the world, it took most of the profit, leave some to Foxconn (a Taiwanese company) and little to the labor. They claimed China was inhuman with one-child policy. At the same time, they accused China of polluting the earth with its huge population. The fact is the Chinese consume just 30% of energy per capita compared to the US. They claimed China underwent ethnic cleansing in Xinjiang. The fact is China has a policy which priorities ethnic minorities. For a long time, the ethnic minorities were allowed to have two children and the majority Han only allowed one. The minorities are allowed a lower score for university intakes. There are 39,000 mosque in China, and 2100 in the US. China has about 3 times more mosque per muslim than the US. When terrorist attacks happened in Xinjiang, China had two choices: 1. Re-educate the Uighur extremists before they turned terrorists. 2. Let them be, after they launch attacks and killed innocent people, bomb their homes. China chose option 1 to solve problem from the root and not to do killing. How the US solve terrorism? Fire missiles from battleships, drop bombs from the sky. During the pandemic, when China took extreme measures to lockdown the people, they were accused of being inhuman. When China recovered swiftly because of the extreme measures, they were accused of lying about the actual numbers. When China’s cases became so low that they could provide medical support to other countries, they were accused of politically motivated. Western Media always have reasons to bash China. Just like any country, there are irresponsible individuals from China which do bad and dirty things, but the China government overall has done very well. But I hear this comment over and over by people from the West: I like Chinese people, but the CPC is evil. What they really want is the Chinese to change the government, because the current one is too good. Fortunately China is not a multi-party democratic country, otherwise the opposition party in China will be supported by notorious NGOs (Non-Government Organization) of the USA, like the NED (National Endowment for Democracy), to topple the ruling party. The US and the British couldn’t crack Mainland China, so they work on Hong Kong. Of all the ex-British colonial countries, only the Hong Kongers were offered BNOs by the British. Because the UK would like the Hong Kongers to think they are British citizens, not Chinese. A divide-and-conquer strategy, which they often used in Color Revolutions around the world. They resort to low dirty tricks like detaining Huawei’s CFO & banning Huawei. They raised a silly trade war which benefits no one. Trade deficit always exist between a developing and a developed country. USA is like a luxury car seller who ask a farmer: why am I always buying your vegetables and you haven’t bought any of my cars? When the Chinese were making socks for the world 30 years ago, the world let it be. But when Chinese started to make high technology products, like Huawei and DJI, it caused red-alert. Because when Western and Japanese products are equal to Chinese in technologies, they could never match the Chinese in prices. First world countries want China to continue in making socks. Instead of stepping up themselves, they want to pull China down. The recent movement by the US against China has a very important background. When Libya, Iran, and China decided to ditch the US dollar in oil trades, Gaddafi’s was killed by the US, Iran was being sanctioned by the US, and now it’s China’s turn. The US has been printing money out of nothing. The only reason why the US Dollar is still widely accepted, is because it’s the only currency which oil is allowed to be traded with. The US has an agreement with Saudi that oil must be traded in US dollar ONLY. Without the petrol-dollar status, the US dollars will sink, and America will fall. Therefore anyone trying to disobey this order will be eliminated. China will soon use a gold-backed crypto-currency, the alarms in the White House go off like mad. China’s achievement has been by hard work. Not by looting the world. I have deep sympathy for China for all the suffering, but now I feel happy for them. China is not rising, they are going back to where they belong.

Well we have to look at history with the Hawk-Keating government. Whilst having a very difficult situation serving in the RAN Keating couldn’t make a decision as he was on holidays, and basically couldn’t give a shit of military personnel Collins class And we are going to make our own subs 40b that ended in disaster and at a cost of 100b and no sailor wishing to serve as they to dangerous and 2 only serviceable (limited)And Mr Kim Beasley made madness changes to the opps of the defence forces that no one wishes to serve now. And that’s what you get people making decisions that they know nothing about. Nuclear power subs should have happened long ago !
I am definitely NOT a Labor Voter. But I support Paul Keating 100% in this. He speaks sense. Our Bidenezy And Marles Are. total disaster for providing security for Australia. Get rid of the US don’t cont doing their bidding .
They are carrying on an LNP disaster policy, Morrison smoked our foriegn relations in the first place and then set up this deal for a photo op. Had they won nothing would be different. Its only a problem if you expect more from Labor than you do from the LNP.
Paul Keating is great man who knows facts, truth and history, thank you 'Sky News Australia' for broadcasting this video, our PLA is protecting our people and our motherlands that if anybody know Chinese history in the past - 谢谢 Paul Keating.
The problem with China is not the people it's the government of China which is an automatic state, Germany and Japan were not a threat for 4000 years also until WW1 and 2

I think American and England are blackmailing Australia or it could be some for you some for me and in 20 years time we'll get them built in China. I agree with Keating about the unsuitability of the submarines for Australian conditions and 40 smaller ones would be better than 6 larger ones
As I listening Paul Keating conversation with Laura, I realized Paul is 100% right. He see the picture clearly and He is rightvmsny ways. Some people are laughing now about what Paul Keating is saying but wait a few years time I promise they won't be laughing because it will be revealing what Paul Keating is is saying mow
Keating revealed he had approached Albanese’s office for a meeting in February about the AUKUS pact but had not received a response. Albasleazy ignoring Keating wasn't the smartest thing to do..
I'm not sure if Albo is actually a mainstream Australian, ie. the one with misconception about China and fully captured by US war propaganda, but fully aware that you can't be too hostile to a trading partner, or is he an objective person but lack of courage to show it for the fear of losing his popularity, therefore leadership. I really cannot identify anyone in Labor party who is totally objective and truthful like Paul Keating. There are more Americans who are like Paul Keating than Australians.
Love him or hate him, Keating tells it straight and the truth hurts but it doesn’t kill, and lies may please, but it doesn’t heal. And he’s right, has got both the opposition and the Labor Govt shooting him down because in reality, Albo just picked up from where the Morrison Govt left off, even Malcolm Turnbull agrees with Keating. And as the old SunTzu art of war states, “He will win who knows how to handle superior forces and who has the capacity and he will win who, prepared himself, waits to take the enemy unprepared and has the military capacity and is not interfered with by the sovereign.” Do people really believe that the enemy is going to wait for their enemy rival to build nuclear submarines before attacking our shores, Pearl Harbour revisited.
Anyone with a minute grasp of geography would know that for the Chinese to launch an attack on Australia would be absolute madness , and for what cause?
let's not make assumption about china's intention. but even if we need to defend our continent, are 8 boats enough? they bet everything on 8 boats for 360 billion, with same amount of money, china can build 480 nuclear 093 subs. we paying way too much, getting way too little. we can rely on 8 toothpicks to defend the entire coast. subs are only good for us to be a pawn for the US, fighting on the frontline instead of them. if US is really helping us defend, they should transfer us land based ballistic missile, b 52 bombers, then no one can invade us. because they strike our land, we trike back.
The world needs more leader like this gentleman. He puts his country interest and welfare about all. Dont be cowed and get involved in Geopolitics. 4.45 his explanation on Strategic Hegemony of USA in Asia.
Keating is right. Fire your leaders Australia or you can pay because the voters put in their leaders. Do not complain when everything's gone bad, you deserve it.
Paul Keating was for me a truly great Priminster of Australia from 1991-1996. No such wokeism in him at all unlike now. Paul Keating was one last stright speakers he'll call a spade a spade.
Paul has a very view in global geopolitic and what best for Oz people. Only hope that his voice loud enough to wake the Aussie up to get their tax back for better lives.
Keating has a thorough understanding and knowledge of Australia's place in Asia. He's appalled that Albo's Labor government has locked the country into American military strategy in Asia. Australia will be sucked into serving US interests in Asia Pacific. Australia risks losing its independence and sovereignty!
Just few things Keating stated was misinformation. 1.Claim Australia waters is too shallow. 2. Submarines are too big and can be seen from satellite. 3. Contradicted himself by stating what's wrong with the French nuclear powerd submarines. It Invalidates his own argument.
AUKUS only benefits UKUS. As for Oz, it's an incredible waste of money on machinery that we DON"T need for defence, but which we're buying in a feeble attempt to keep the British and American governments onside by enriching their countries' arms manufacturers yet again. History has demonstrated, over and over, that their loyalty toward us is NEVER guaranteed, and this deal won't change a thing. How about $350, 000, 000, 000 be spent on fire-fighting or flood mitigation measures instead? Or perhaps we can spend it on better educational facilities, or installing MRI machines in our regional and country hospitals, or on public housing to get people into residences and off the streets, instead of living in tents and cars as a result of this ridiculous housing shortage. Nah - too logical, that.
When the Master, PJK, speaks, we like to listen and learn. A great and wise Australian with brains and real vast knowledge plus a sense of humor who truly loves Australia and for him it is country before party. Not a good day for the school boys and amateurs and those who are paid to tarnish the image of that great Austrslian. *Mr PJK, I salute you* 👍🌹
Australia is paying $46 billion per submarine to support the US military industrial complex! Scotty Morrison appointed Kathryn Campbell (Re Robodebt) as our AUKUS advisor, salary $900,000! What possibly could go wrong? Australia would do well by being neutral. Remember the great US aggresive empire in recent times, defeated by Vietnam, Iraq, & Afghanistan etc
Being neutral and insisting on being neutral and independent is the smartest posture that preserves Australia’s uniqueness and maintains the respect of the world. As of now, Australia is like a dumb ox, yoked to a plough, kicked and prodded by the US with nothing but grain fed lies for sustenance.

Paul Keating, for 40 years I have harboured intense negative emotions for you because of what you did to me in the Recesswe We Had to Have. I now forgive you, Finally someone who raises my point. EXACTLY WHAT WILL THESE NUCLEAR POWERED SUBS DO??? 3 or 8 or even 10 subs cannot do anything against an invasion armada. 400 BILLION DOLLARS for what. We have so many issues to resolve that spending 400 BILLION dollars on subs is crazy. If you want to restart manufacturing in Australia then invest in manufacturing. There are a pile of things we could make rather than feeding the military industrial complex.
ASEAN countries love Paul Keating, because he knows full well that Australia lies in Asia Pasific region, most Australian PM think Australia is in North Atlantic. Paul Keating CAN read MAPS!!!!
We could have twenty of these subs and the Chinese could still whip our ass in a war, they nuclear powered not nuclear armed so what is the good of them.
Deterrent? Debatable. Stability? Feck no, this whole deal just split AU in two and pissed Xi and his CCP off. There's gonna be obvious instability fallouts from this.
USA expanding its military industrial complex by feeding on Aussie fear. USA always needs a bogey man to make billions. Aussie lives are less important than USA $
All we would need is 50-100 of the 747 CMCA - Cruise Missile Carrier Aircraft And this would save us having a huge navy This variant was considered by the U.S. Air Force as a Cruise Missile Carrier Aircraft during the development of the B-1 Lancer strategic bomber. It would have been equipped with 50 to 100 AGM-86 ALCM cruise missiles on rotary launchers. This plan was abandoned in favor of more conventional strategic bombers.
Australia does need a nuclear weapons program, Japan wasn't a threat to the SE Asia and Pacific region for 4000 years and then all of a sudden they were. I puzzled over what's going to be built down in Adelaide, so far it looks like a variant between a British Astute class and a US scaled down Ohio class
Australia will need nuclear subs that carry their strategic nuclear deterrent. Only way for a small population country to guarantee their security in Indo-Pacific. They only need enough subs so as to always have some at sea while others are in dry dock being maintained. This is how U.K. ultimately guarantees it’s security.
An Australian crewing a Nuclear submarine that spends 12 months underwater without sufacing for a barbecue on deck? You must be joking, the navy will have to bring back press gangs!
55 Days at peking ,is what drives China to do what it dose, luckily for Australia we were not involved , so China should by rights leave us alone ? ? ?
What's true he contradicted his own argument when he stated what was wrong with the French nuclear powerd submarines. And he gave misinformation to state the nuclear powerd submarines can be seen by satellite. I'd like to know how a satellite can pick up any submarine submerged 400 feet where the light no longer pentrate. The US can't and they have better satellite than China and Russia does. And his other claim Australia water to shallow. When Australia has the deepest sea than most countries do. Even the south China Sea is 3674 meters deep compared to Australia 7 milies depths sea. Thoughs little island's he said is nothing has DF26 missiles on them with putting Australian cities in strike range. I'd like how Keating plan to strike back at such islands can take place with conventional powerd submarines using only torpedos will keep Australia safe? Nuclear powerd submarines have a VLS and eqwiped with tomahawk missiles. It would make sense to have the greater deterrent. Keating also gave misinformation about China not threating Australia. The Chinese threatened to bomb Australia 3 times in 2022. Including tried to make military bases set-up in the pacific on our door step basically putting every Australian city in range of DF41 hypersonic missiles.. China has also sail their warships of the cost of Australian waters in-between new Guinea and Australia and fired lasers at our patrol aircraft. Oh China not a threat?
I liked the way you responded with actual arguments. I think it’s the first response I’ve seen that used some valid points (although I’m not sure if your sources are legit - or your points are true - because I just don’t know anything about that). All I’ve seen is really lame attacks on Paul. The old attack the man not the argument approach. And When you have Tony Abbott & Scott Morrison backing Albanese & Wong I start getting really suspicious. So kudos for actually laying out a response more meaningful than “Paul Keating is behind the times or old or doddery … “ some other nonsense argument. Yeah.. nah. He’s not. Whatever else he is.. he’s not that.
