It's just further human arrogance. Our combination of self-importance, self-effacement, arrogance, and fear of change just help drive the rhetoric. A single volcanic eruption changes the atmospheric composition more than our entire species history, yet _clearly_ it is our fault the system is changing. We went on, and on, and *_ON_* about how plastic would scar the planet for centuries. Bacteria have already evolved to eat the stuff. The biggest thing I feel we've legitimately done is jacked up North America's ecosystem: Beavers created damns, which produced forests from prairie. Beavers die or move on, damns break, water disperses, forests dies back to fertile prairie. Bison come along, graze the grass, fertilize the soil, while beavers set up new damns, flood old and soil-drained prairies downriver. Rinse and repeat. It was a cyclical, wandering ecosystem that went on for thousands of years. It would honestly be difficult to fix, even if we did tear down and recycle *every major city, **_somehow._* But honestly? That too was just waiting for something, _anything,_ to happen, and force a change. If it wouldn't be humans, something else would change it eventually. Impermanence is the natural state of things.
