Why Rory Stewart’s ‘Politics on the edge’ is a great book and shows why we need to make better choices around who we allow to run our beloved country. We need to take a bigger interest in politics and we need to put ability ahead of popularity. Either way, this is a great listen on audible and I highly recommend it. I also hope Rory comes back to politics at some point and I wish him every success hopefully beyond whatever his phoney ex colleagues achieve but I’ll leave the definition of success up to him!
Another quote of Solzhenitsyn’s I wanted to include as relevant to this book is as follows - “The western world has lost its civic courage….Such a decline in courage is particularly noticeable among the ruling and intellectual elite, causing an impression of a loss of courage by the entire society”. I’ll just leave that there.
Subscribe for more reviews - next ones being ‘The Case for Trump’ by Victor Davis Hanson, ‘Great Uncle Harry’ by Michael Palin and ‘As I Walked out one midsummer morning’ by Laurie Lee

I haven't read the book, but I follow the Rest Politics on Spotify. Rory is possibley the best Conservative PM we could never have had. Liked your review. Seemed balanced. Will take a look at the book myself when I get a chance.

I loved this book too. I don't agree with Rory on all his politics, but at least he seems like he's a serious politician and has integrity in bucketloads, which is a rare thing in British politics at the moment. The Conservatives missed a trick when he didn't get elected as leader in 2019. He could have saved us all from the following sh*t show and maybe the Conservatives would still be in the running as a credible party (not that I care too much about that). He's hinted on his podcast, though I don't know how serious he was, that he would consider joining Labour, which would be interesting.

Still believed in the mistaken and permanently damaging ideology of austerity

You can’t beat reading as many good books as possible. Maybe some podcasts (I’d recommend Rory Stewart’s) you could also get involved locally and just pay attention to what’s happening without getting swept up by people who have the same opinions and backgrounds etc.

As far as posh is concerned, both Boris and Rory went to Eaton. But Rory is wayyyy too considered, honourable and decent to be of interest to the current electorate. And he doesn't tell as funny after dinner jokes.
