I have two of these - Maryland 7B. One on a corner foundation and one as part of a screen. Both made it through this past winter totally unscathed. They did get some scale this spring. Overall great shrub. 👍

I have 2 of these because you introduced it into your garden and thought it would fit mine as well. I got them last year and they have done well so far. I'm in 7a TN. Thank you for alllll the details you just shared. Very helpful.

I just planted a Brackens Brown Beauty this year and a couple years ago a Sweet Bay - I love this magnolia you're presenting as well - maybe I'll add to my growing collection (7b Baltimore).

I added one of these about two years ago. Its very dense and has a nice look to it but I'm disappointed in it overall. The flowers are very dark and are difficult to see among the foliage. It blooms in the spring and then not again after that and the flowers are extremely lightly scented. I have to put my nose right into the flower to smell anything. Even then, its very light. Another local gardening friend has had the same experience with this plant. If you're looking for something that's pretty low maintenance and evergreen, this will work. But the flowers really aren't anything to write home about.

I agree with the good growth but sparse flowers- planted it last fall. Spring flowers came and went with me hardly noticing. one or two at the end of summer. Hope it gets a bit more showy eventually as I don't think the foliage looks nice enough to be a showpiece plant- and like some magnolias- seems to always be shedding a few yellow leaves. I may have to move it to a back border instead!

I’m in 7a and planted 2 last fall, one at my house and one at a friend’s house. Struggled through the winter! But I fertilized babied it through the spring and summer. It did flower and it’s really healthy now!

First, I love watching your videos. Second, I wish there was a review section in the actual southern living website. So I'll just leave my experience with this plant in here. I'll have to be honest, I love Southern living magazines, good recipes, etc, but I have to say, I'm pretty disappointed with the performance of all of the plants I've gotten through Southern Living. I bought this Stellar Ruby back in 2020. It arrived so full of false oleander scale, every inch was covered, that they refunded me. I hand picked thousands of scale off and used r. Alcohol, and actually successfully eradicated the scale. It has been thriving since. But the reason I purchased it was because of the "reblooming" aspect. Most of my plant collection consists of rebloomers, or long bloomers. While this plant fills out with thick amounts of leaves, it only blooms once for me, every February. Which is odd that it blooms so early. And no blooms for the rest of the year, just heavy leaves. I fertilize with a blooming fertilizer a couple times a year, give it full sun all year. Not one single bloom after the initial. And the flowers are teeny tiny. Like an inch. Hard to see them with the drastic amount of leaves. I also bought 2 Southern Living Camellias October magic Snow, October Magic Dawn back in 2020. Plus an Early wonder Camilia from another brand. The Early wonder bloomed a few months later. The October magics did not. The Early wonder is about to bloom again now in 2023 and I lost the Dawn a few months ago, it died, and the Snow has zero buds on it, and has never bloomed. Neither of the October Magics have ever bloomed. I have little gem magnolias, a crape myrtle, several plants similar, from other brands and they all bloom and perform well for me. Only the southern living plants have left me disappointed. Thank you.

I forgot to add one other problem with this Stellar Ruby-because of the ultra thick leaves (good for privacy screen) it has gotten some kind of mold under the leaves that I have to spray with copper, and I've had to prune out many branches out of the crown yearly because it gets so thick and causes this mold. And it just thickens right back up, quickly, and becomes not see through again. So you're almost forced to thin out the crown often as it's susceptible to this mold under the leaves that cause thfm to yellow and fall off.

I’m considering this plant and appreciate you sharing your experience. Not sure if you’ll see this, but wanted to ask: where you are located?

@@amberbest6942 I've heard this kind of issue can happen in humid environments and certain plants have to be thinned out to allow airflow.

I planted mine in the ground in early spring, flowered some but now not getting more leaves. Just top part of tree has leaves. It is planted in full sun. I am in Youngsville, NC zone 8A. Please advise! Gisèle.

So in zone 9a should it get, maybe, afternoon shade? I know typically when something tops out at zone nine, and says it can do part shade, that means in zone 9 it "needs" the part shade. Is anybody growing this in NE Florida and can weigh in on where you've got it planted?

I just saw some at the nursery in Texas, in a Southern living pot but it had yellow flowers not ruby.

Jim, please help! I took your recommendation and purchased 3 of these to create a hedge. Two of them came with black spots on the leaves and within days of planting them, it’s now spread to my new Chindo Viburnums (also from your recommendation). What can it be?

I bought one last spring and it came with 7 stems in a one gallon pot. I cut out all but 2 stems. I feel like it has. It grown as fast as some of your videos might suggest and I’m wondering if it’s because it is competing with the other stem. Do you think i should cut out one of the stems again to make it a single plant?

I'm in 8b Tallahassee Fl. How would this plant do with shade during the day with only late afternoon sun?

Hello... I am in New Jersey 7a. Are there magnolias that can be kept in containers? I would like to keep the tree at about 6 feet in height. I thought keeping in a container would help that or am I wrong... would that harm the plant?

I believe you can prune these and keep them at 6 feet

Is this Stelllar Ruby a banana shrub or a Japanese magnolia? I'm confused.
