The relationship between the US and Britain has always been avaricious creditor and benighted debtor. All the "Aid" the US gave britain during WW2 had to be repaid with interest, hence rationing and "Export or die" in the 1950s, leading people in Britain to be on the verge of starvation. The US cared little for the plight of Britain and Europe until Pearl Harbour and her own self interest. Thus it ever was. Thank God the weak and ineffectual Harold Wilson refused to let us get involved in Vietnam ...... the only time Britain said NO to US requests.

Feels more like the special relationship between a priest and a young boy

Remember the attitude of the American President and the UK Prime Minister in the film Love Actually? It strikes me that the Americans have been just expecting the UK to roll over and do as it's told, rather that actually listening and backing up the UK. Look at Mr Biden and the Head of NATO job. 'We don't want someone who knows what they are doing. We want someone who we can manage and will do as we tell them to.' We need someone with the balls to stand up and say, 'There isn't any ''special relationship'' between the US and UK, and we will be putting this country first in future.'

In his 6 vol. text 'The Second World War' author Winston Churchill writes that the USA deliberately delayed entry into WW2 until Dec. 1941. In order that Europe, the UK, Russia, China and Japan could all distroy each other. This would then leave the USA free to rule the world without opposition. The "special relationship" was basically the Americans having our back militarily under any circumstances should the UK fall into conflict with another country. However, the trade-off meant we pretty much do as they say and many of their citizens are allowed diplomatic immunity, including Anne Sacoolas who killed that poor child in a hit and run accident. She should have been extradited here for trial but wasn't.

Peter is exactly right. We need to stop sucking up to America and start looking at our own interests, not just for ourselves, but for the world's interests as well. To me, it seems obvious that Britain should seriously begin to pursue CANZUK, which would give all four member countries more influence, prosperity, and security around the world, and allow Canada, New Zealand, Australia and the UK to break free of the cold war alignment/relationship America is desperately holding onto. The CANZUK countries already have aligning interests that run counter to American interests. In addition to holding closer cultural, political, and social affinity than almost any other nation in the world. Whatsmore they are all members of NATO, the 5 Eyes, and the Commonwealth of Nations with the same head of state, The King, and the same governmental systems with similar laws, regulations, and values. Indeed, like the commonwealth, CNAZUK is open for expansion to other similar nations of the former empire, or new friends who joined the commonwealth. CANZUK is also already a popular idea with only the UK polling below 70% approval for the union. It will mean a truly successful global Brexit Britain, free from America, the EU, and the influence/dependence of genocidal dictatorships around the world like Russia and China. If you have not heard of CANZUK before I strongly advise you to check it out, there are plenty of videos on RU-vid that explain the idea, as well as its benefits and flaws, nothing is perfect after all. But it is a much better alternative than being stuck in the old cold war dynamic America and Russia cling to, nor can we continue to support America's so-called War of Terror, which has led to the deaths of countless civilians and irreparably harmed the world, solely for America's oil and political interest. We need to spread the idea and have a proper, informed, and grown-up national conversation about CANZUK.

Peter's correct. I never hear Americans talking about the UK. UK has very little to trade and what it does can be sourced elsewhere. With Brexit, UK is no longer a window into the EU and the financial standing of London will dwindle as Dublin becomes more of the English-speaking access point to Europe.

The incident with Harry Dunn was all the proof you needed that this relationship is one way traffic.
