The "deal" she was given was to "earn" her old albums by releasing new ones (one new for one old) under Scooter's management, all while being under the NDA to never discuss him again. As far as I remember, the NDA wasn't for after signing the new deal but to even begin negotiations for a price on these already set terms. There wasn't a number quoted, there was only tyrannical terms. That's not a business deal, that's despotism, in my eyes.

Scooter was never her manager, the deal of one new one for one old one was given to her by Borchetta. Scooter was never in business with her to give her an old album for a new one. That has absolutely nothing to do with Scooter.

I think this documentary left out a very important part of the story, the Taylor and Scott relationship.He was like a second father to her, when he discovered her he didn't even have a label and he convince Taylors parents to wait and not sign Taylor to another label until he founded Big Machine
@crystalkadletc1944

I’d say literally Taylor built Big Machine, she was the majority of the value. There was no other artist until after she signed out with Scott. So I’d agree she built that label, her dad invested money into this no. Existent label. So yea she built it To clear up the American Music performance. Taylor posted about them not allowing her. That was the catalyst…once she posted about it to got EVERYONE and their brother to call out Scooter for what he was trying to pull. They didn’t talk about the response of that. She was essentially allowed and she did a medley of her music starting with The Man.

Taylor always said that the recording Kim released was doctored. It came out in 2020 that was true and the actual recording was released that proved her right. That's what the song Cassandra is about on TTPD - So, they killed Cassandra first 'cause she feared the worst / And tried to tell the town / So, they filled my cell with snakes, I regret to say / Do you believe me now?

What people misunderstand is that Taylor is not arguing that what they did wasn't legal. She knows how the industry works, she knows the law. But back then she didn't, at least not as much as she does now. Should she have known better before she signed a contract? Yes. But you also have to realise she was 15. Should someone older have been supervising and making sure what went down, like her parents? Probably. And yes, her dad did own shares in the label but only 3-5% and I don't think he had any say in any major decisions regarding Taylor's career or that he knew about the sale. Bottom line is, she was a young, new artist who was being taken advantage of. She was still not dumb. She even declined a contract with Sony because they wanted her to release songs she hadn't written. BMR sold/bought the masters of HER songs that SHE wrote without her permission (a big part of why she is able to re-record her songs is because she owns a part of the composition rights since she wrote/co-wrote all of them). And the worst part is that it was all legal. But it shouldn't be. It's not ethical or moral. She decided to push back against what may be standard music industry business practice but is morally wrong and she then used her influence over public opinion to sway that standard to be more just. For daring to speak out and use the power she earned on her own merit to try to change the industry, the other side labeled her as "playing the victim", a stereotype often applied to people when they try to change what they believe is wrong. That's the point Taylor is trying to make. She is also speaking on behalf of artists who are not as big as her and don't have the means to fight back or to re-record their music. Taylor knows how lucky and privileged she is. But this isn't just about her. She took out her entire catalogue off of Spotify and Apple Music so they'd pay artists more and it worked. She has always fought for artists' rights to their work. Taylor's team said in a statement at the end that she has completely moved on from this whole thing. First when I heard about this doc, it seemed to be very pro-Scooter and anti-Taylor. I didn't realise there were two different episodes basically showing both sides. So it wasn't as bad as I thought it would be. Taylor's side (Part 1) argues that they wouldn't sell her her masters, at least not without strings, and that it was an utter betrayal. I was also happy to see some genuine fans of Taylor that I've followed over the years, like Alex Goldshmidt who's engagement party Taylor showed up to (he was also in the Shake It Off music video) and more recently Zachary Hourihane (aka Swiftologist on RU-vid). I know they would not have participated in this if they had an inkling that it was gonna twist the story to make Taylor look like the bad guy. However, Scooter's side (Part 2) is definitely very biased and just talking about the legalities and completely missing the point. They argued that Taylor refused to negotiate and instead incited a public feud by pitting her fan base against him. I don't agree with bullying or harassment EVER, and I think it's horrrible that Scooter has received death threats, and even worse, HIS KIDS. That is unaccceptable. But Taylor didn't incite that kind of behaviour and it's not her fault that some people are so unhinged they send people death threats, even innocent kids. At the same time, I don't blame Scooter for people on his side sending Taylor death threats. Even though he's treated her horribly, he's NEVER insinuated he wanted her dead. It's still wrong what he's done but there's a clear difference. As for toxic Swifties, there are toxic fans in every fandom, but it's important to remember those people are not the majority, they are just the loudest. As a Swiftie myself, I do understand where they are coming from. We've watched Taylor being beaten down by the media and other people in the industry, especially men. So when they see someone like you Danny, they automatically think that you're just a misogynistic hater who literally has to criticise EVERYTHING she does and says (ahem Ben Shapiro ahem). She's also been criticised for writing songs about her exes her entire career so it's a very sensitve subject. But the real ones know what you meant and that you didn't mean it in a bad way. Not everyone has to like Taylor's music or be a fan and even fans don't have to like or agree with everything she does. As long as people are being respectful and open minded, they deserve to express any opinion they have without facing backlash. Also, nobody is saying Taylor is the first one this has happened to or to re-record their catalogue. There is Prince (who once said "If you don’t own your masters, your master owns you"), The Beatles, George Michael, Janet Jackson, TLC, Jay-Z, Rihanna, Def Leppard and JoJo to name a few. But, first of all, she owns a part of the composition rights since she wrote/co-wrote all of her songs. Second of all, she's one of the biggest artists in this generation and has a lot of power and influence, especially in this day and age with social media. I mean, record companies are already changing their contracts because of her, which could make it harder for artists in the future to be able to re-record their music. Olivia Rodrigo said that witnessing what Taylor has been through made her realise how cautious she needs to be. She said she refused to sign with a label until she found one that would allow her to own her masters and give her a fair deal in royalties, licensing and revenue. And to clear things up: Scooter Braun just announced he's "retiring" as a manager and has joined the board of South Korean entertainment company Hybe and continue to serve as the CEO of Hybe America. He was Demi's manager, but thankfully, she had already left him last year. What's interesting is that several of his clients seem to have dropped him around the same time, namely Demi, Ariana and Idina Menzel (voice of Elsa from Frozen/Elphaba in Wicked on Broadway/Rachel's birthmother on Glee). At the time, an anonymous source said all of his clients were under contract not to leave him and not to say anyting bad about him. Justin appears to have still been with him, though there were rumours he left too. As someone who is not just a Swiftie but a Belieber was well (and a Lovatic), I don't agree with the way Justin talked about Taylor around the time all this shit was happening or his friendship with Kanye (and certain other people), but as someone who's followed him and his career since practically the beginning, I understand it's more complicated for him than the others. He was with him the longest and Scooter WAS kind of a father figure to him since Justin's real father wasn't really in his life in his early childhood, not until his career really took off (shocker). So I definitely think Justin may have been a bit blinded by Scooter and felt indebted to him. He is the one who kind of discovered him and has helped him a lot in his career and his life in general. Also, Justin has since apologised for the Instagram post but still remained loyal to Scooter. It's sad because he and Taylor actually used to be friends since he opened up for her on her Fearless tour. Many people think what Taylor said in her speech at the Billboard Women in Music event (which you can watch here: ru-vid.com/video/%D0%B2%D0%B8%D0%B4%D0%B5%D0%BE-ZVpkFb9-fts.htmlsi=0yNI4cU5mOdDdeau), i.e. "He's always been nice to me" was shade towards Demi, who said something along those lines when she had recently signed with him (many people also think it could have been directed towards Sia who said something similar, or both of them). As someone who is a fan of hers too, I was disappointed in her for that, especially because she claims to be such a feminist. Demi and Taylor have had some "beef" over the years but even I can admit it was mainly just Demi being a petty drama queen. Things seem to be okay between them now, at least Demi seemed to appreciate Taylor supporting her during her performance at this year's VMAs. Taylor dated Taylor Lautner (from Twilight) briefly in 2009. They were called Taylor-Squared and are now good friends, along with Taylor L's wife, who is also called Taylor Lautner since she took his name (maiden name is Dome). They don't have any kids, the ex she sent his kids presents to was Joe Jonas. Taylor dated Tom Hiddleston (Loki) in 2016. 11:52 That's Joe Alwyn, her 6 year relationship. Regarding the AMA performance, in spite of denying Taylor's claims that she wasn't allowed to perform her old songs, they issued a statement saying they had agreed to "allow" it a week before the show. Taylor won for the video You Belong With Me at the VMAs 2009. Lastly, here is Taylor's Tumblr post after the sale was made public: taylorswift.tumblr.com/post/185958366550/for-years-i-asked-pleaded-for-a-chance-to-own-my. She said she was unaware that Scooter was the buyer which was a major shock and betrayal to her because of their history. It was an even bigger betrayal that Scott, who had been with her from the start and was someone she thought she could trust, went behind her back and sold it to the man he knew had hurt her (My Tears Ricochet from Folklore is rumoured to be about him). Here is Scott's response: www.bigmachinelabelgroup.com/so-its-time-some-truth/. Regarding his statement, Iggy Azalea made a great point: "Telling someone about a deal days before it’s public means the deal was already done and she never had the opportunity to even make a bid to own her own work. These deals take months to negotiate in long form". Here is a video explaining copyright laws from a fairly unbiased view by an actual lawyer, Devin James Stone/LegalEagle on YT, from 2021 (by this time, only Fearless TV had been released): ru-vid.com/video/%D0%B2%D0%B8%D0%B4%D0%B5%D0%BE-M-A_RrOeoWw.htmlsi=RpZ1_IWSIjnFvYYH.

She wasn't given the chance to buy anything until it was already in the hands of others and she had to share the profits from her music with him. F*ck it! You were right not to accept! I am convinced that scooter bought these just to get to her. He stood alongside Kanye for 10 yrs while he bullied her, then buys BMR. The a selfie with Justin Bieber, scooter, Kanye all together gets immediately posted on instagram with the caption “what up, Taylor”. You tell me that’s not deliberate. She hasn’t mentioned his name since 2019, while he has given countless interviews about her. He just keeps trying to keep himself relevant. As a new interesting note. Taylor’s label is Republic, owned by music giant Universal. Universal also does all Republic’s distributing, albums, merchandise, etc. very recently, Universal made a business deal with Scooter Braun and HYBE, where Universal will handle all of HYBE’s distribution. However, in this deal, Universal has promoted scooter Bron to oversee all promotions and marketing in North America. Interestingly, about the same time that was announced, Taylor took over her marketing of all her merch, no longer distributed by UMG.

this “documentary” was literally an excuse to paint taylor in a bad light / make scooter look like a victim, she had nothing to do with this. at the end, there’s a lil part about a statement her team gave that she’s moved on from this painful chapter of her life. BMR was nothing without taylor, she was their first artist. Scott borchetta was basically a 2nd father to her then stabbed her in the back. Idk if they explain this in the doc cos I haven’t watched it fully but if they talk about her declining buying her masters back, it’s because they were gonna lock her in an endless cycle of creating a new album to get back each old one. *On the VMA performance,* she DID finally get permission to perform SOME of her older songs. BUT all of that was THANKS to the public pressure that artists and fans were putting on THEM to allow her to do so and when they tried to say that she was ONCE AGAIN victim playing because they "never said she couldn't perform her songs in the show" her and her team published the emails and letters where the label was LITERALLY telling her she had no permission to sing them.... after that the label (scoot and scooter) caved and allowed her to... BUT Scooter afterward went public saying that HE had nothing to do with that whole fiasco and that it was ALL SCOTT.

Scooter was not legally in the wrong, and Taylor is not in the wrong for being upset and working to reclaim her work. Scooter ended up selling the masters to Shamrock Holdings owned by Disney but Scooter still makes money on them so Taylor would never buy the masters back as long as he can still make money on her work. Also, Taylor is legally allowed to re-record. Instead of who was in the “right or wrong”, the documentary should have focused on why was this ok- WHY is it so hard for artists to buy/own their own work? WHY do the systems in place allow this to happen? And the documentry could have led to a greater discussion of reinventing the music industry.

@Starbuck-dr7yl
@Starbuck-dr7yl 8 дней назад
Just a quick clarification, shamrock is not owned by disney. It is a private equity firm founded by Roy E Disney and his family. Their family is its sole investor. This is a private company owned by the estate. It is different than the Disney company very different things. The two have nothing to do with each other. The reason it was so difficult for Taylor to purchase her masters is because of greed. Taylor was BMR’s first signee and by 2019 she accounted for 75-80% of the label’s revenue. Without her masters, the label was worthless. Borchetta wanted to sell the label. He couldn’t do that without one of two things. Taylor re-signing, or her masters. He made her that make one get one offer to get her to stay, and he would still maintain some of her masters. When she walked, all he had was her masters making the value of the label. He didn’t sell her masters to a scooter, he sold the label to scooter. The label still exists but under a much larger umbrella. He made 300 million out of the deal, and got to stay CEO of the label. Thats why she couldn’t purchase them, he wanted a bigger payout. As if she hadn’t made him enough money. Had he sold her the masters, the label would have been worthless and he wouldn’t have been able to sell it. So his greed kept her from buying them.

Taylor and her team responded with a screenshot of the letter/email they received from Scooter and Big Machine which in fact did state that Taylor was NOT permitted to perform her old songs. After her team, fans, and many other artists and executives in the industry called Scooter’s bluff, he decided to allow Taylor to perform her old songs for the performance. Honestly, just go look up Taylor’s Tumblr post from 2019 addressing the sale. This kind of pains Taylor in a bad light, saying that she knew about the seal to scooter. No, she didn’t know that Scott Borchetta her old label executive was going to sell it to scooter. She knew he was going to sell them, but she didn’t know to who and she said that’s what hurts the most. Taylor in an interview with CBS. Good morning in 2019 (you can find it on RU-vid) told the interviewer that she and Scott Borchetta have had endless conversations about Scooter Braun and he had 300 million reasons to forget those conversations because Scooter Braun bought Taylor, Swift, masters, and big machine records for 300 million he later than sold them to a company called Ithaca holdings which is connected to Disney.

@yara5502 5 дней назад
NO. I don´t know who told so many this lie. The record deal she turned down at that time was NOT sony, it was with RCA records. The deal taylor signed at 14 was a publishing deal for songwriting with SONY/ATV and she had that deal until 2019. The guy who ran SONY/ATV at that time is the same who now runs UMG/universal records now, so the new deal she signed in 2019 was a joint publishing/record deal with the same people she had worked with since her first deal, but now under the UMG umbrella. She was discovered when she played a gig at the bluebird where Scott Borchetta found her, but at that time he had not started BMR yet, so he asked her to wait until he had started his label and she signed with him about a year later. So her deal with Sony was not the one she turned down and it was not a record deal, she worked with them for a very long time.

I heard that the documentary is quite bad, I didn't plan to watch it, but I guess I'll watch your reaction and see...I am just afraid that Scooter's part will make me mad as hell cause from what I've heard, they just basically focused on the fact that he bough it legally, but not on the act of buying the work of someone else when that someone else clearly wanted to own it.
@NawiTheCore
@NawiTheCore 8 дней назад
What do you mean "the work of someone else"? She still owned the songs themselves because she wrote them/co-wrote. What was bought were the master recordings, which were paid for by her record label AND she had agreed they would legally be owned by her label exclusively when she signed her recording contract. Scoot only gets a cut of the profits from owning those masters, but Taylor could still do whatever she wanted with the songs themselves (as in: the compositions), re-record them, perform them whatever she wanted, etc. It is important to understand this nuances before commenting on the subject.
@adabadoskova2915
@adabadoskova2915 8 дней назад
@@NawiTheCore I know we're talking about the masters, but that's exactly the point. Yes, she owns the base of the songs because she wrote them, but she doesn't own the recordings themselves and the owner of those decides what the recordings will be used for, such as use in films, TV shows and such. That's the whole point of this though. You're going about this only from the legal perspective. You don't consider the mental bond between and artist and their work. Every artist should be able to own her own music. Yeah, she can re-record it, and she's doing it, and even tho I'm sure she enjoyed part of that process, it's also a lot of work that she would not have to be doing, if she was just allowed to own her music. She could've used that time rerecording songs on so many other things and while she's doing that she still has to share profits from the original albums with a person that did her so dirty in the past.

I lost two friends 20 years ago who I was in a band with because I refused to sign a development deal with a record company, due to it's ownership clauses. Essentially, we would have automatically transferred ownership of all works, within the 30 month contract, with no obligation on the label to ever release anything in our name. This is a long-running problem with the music industry. Record companies strip artists of their life's work with promises of fame and riches, when all they are is administrators and network gatekeepers. Every penny that a record label puts up is a loan that the artist is on the hook to pay back from sales, and yet somehow, ownership of that artist's work is automatically theirs.

I’ve been thinking about this video all day, to the point where I finally had to go against my own internal cognitive dissonance and watch it. Even this half isn’t unbiased and it leaves out some important detail about how Scott Borchetta ingratiated himself into Taylor’s life and family beyond what would be considered a normal business, transactional relationship which is how they portrayed it here. Probably because of the age when she signed with Big Machine, and because of how involved in her career her actual family was, he really became like family to all of them and there is tons of evidence of this over the years. And maybe it wasn’t his intention to harm her in doing so but I think it was absolutely grooming behavior. Taylor Swift was groomed by Scott Borchetta and then he made millions off by deliberately disregarding her very well known feelings about Scooter Braun to financially enrich himself. All of that said, this half wasn’t as negative as I expected it to be. And I guess I can see why you guys chose to watch it even though I still don’t think I’ll be watching the second half. It’s just hard for me to blame Taylor for anything she’s done no matter how bad some might view it when the catalyst was a grown man grooming her yet again, something she had previous trauma about. And while Taylor’s fan base can be toxic (and even though I try not to be, I know even I fall into that category sometimes) Taylor herself isn’t in charge of what strangers do anymore than Trump was responsible for the assault Nancy Pelosi’s husband was a victim of. He talked smack about her all the time and some deranged criminal took their own action in the matter. Social media has a way of making people think they can do and say anything and it’s horrible but Taylor didn’t invent that. I guess at the end of the day I’m always going to side with the woman when she tells me about how she was victimized or otherwise harmed by a man or men. Women in the music industry have been harmed enough. And Taylor’s doing something to fight back and she will always have my support for that. I wish you well! But I’m taking my leave of this channel now. I am just really uncomfortable with what feels like the devils advocating that I’m seeing play out here. But you do you. 💙 that’s your right and I respect it.

This whole situation was SO messy and painful to watch in real time, it really happened in the middle of Lover, then the pandemic. All of those people Justin, scooter, Scott, Demi, etc. Are so-- agh, about the dead threads that’s awful but you can’t feel bad for the guy, it was so shady, he laugh at Taylor’s fans all the time on Instagram, he literally posted a story from a friend that read: “when your friend owns Taylor swift”. At the end Taylor won, scooter rep was destroyed, his marriage destroyed (his wife posted an awful note lying about Taylor on Instagram that was very criticized), ended on a spiritual retreat. Taylor got to re record, we had more music than it was before, new albums and a great creative period, it came from pain though but it payed.

I think they need to define the word “documentary”. If the person that you are speaking about is not releasing any information to you, and you are basing most of your information off of what the opposite side is saying- it isn’t a documentary. I also, have seen the contracts that she signed with Big Machine. Yes they did own her music. That was why SHE made the decision to leave. It was THAT DECISION that screwed her over. Without Taylor, Big Machine folded and instead of offering the music that this girl had written and performed- to her, they offered it to her ONE ENEMY’S (Kanye) MANAGER. It was maniacal, and she didn’t know it occurred until after the sale was complete. Now, you can all say it was a “business decision”- it wasn’t, she would’ve paid more to keep her music. They also offered the other artists on the label their music. Every. Single. One. So, do I blame Scooter- no. He’s an asshole, but I don’t blame him for this. I do blame him for the way he acted AFTER the sale occurred. People seem to have this selective amnesia, and HE was the asshole in the situation NOT HER. He could’ve easily sold them to Taylor without those extras he added on. I still think the way she handled things was best. Re-recording and releasing the same music basically nerfed the albums so he HAD to sell them- which he did, and he made money. Nowhere near as much as he would’ve made had there not had been duplicate songs though. She is a smart young woman. He is a sleazy man. The blame with this issue though lies with the leads of Big Machine.

'Back to December' is her song about her break up with Taylor Lautner, She was sad she broke up with him & regretted it. Pretty song. ~ The phone call was edited to sound like Taylor was ok with it & the media turned on her. She disappeared for a year & came back with her 'Reputation tour'. 'Look what you made me do' is about Kanye & Kim & the media. They 'made her' get hard & trust no one. Her beginning line says, 'I don't like your tilted stage (Kanye did that on his tour), I don't like the role you made me play, 'the fool', I don't like you'. Totally about them. Recently, the entire recording came out & Taylor has been vindicated & people have turned on Kim K now. 'thanK you aIMee' is about Kim. (notice the capital letters in the title.) 'Bad blood' is about her & Katy Perry. They were good friends & then Katy stole some of Taylor's dancers. After a few years, Katy sent Taylor a literal olive branch & a lovely apology letter & they made up. Katy even has a cameo in Talor's 'You need to calm down' video & Katy also came to one of the Era's performances a few months back.

Okay, so the death threats were given by zealot swifties. I feel like most swifties are not like that. Most will absolutely go to bat for her, but not in that kind of extreme way. Those kinds of threats are never NEVER okay. But those are the swifties that get attention because they are so extreme, so we are all painted as such. I am a very new swiftie, and I hate that there are some people that won’t even give her music a chance because of those extremist swifties out there that make her fandom “seem like a cult”. I know that Danny has had some issues with some swifties as well, because we can be very opinionated about Taylor and her music too. I get how her fandom can rub people the wrong way sometimes. I know I’ve gone to bat with people over opinions that have untruths in them, in which I call them out on it. (“She only writes songs about exes and ex-friends” -marjorie, Ronan, epiphany, almost all of Lover and reputation as they are mostly love and statement songs) “all her music sounds the same” -I will never understand how Haunted sounds like betty or Lover or Mean or Our Song, so I seriously feel like it is fact that her music does not all sound the same. Some does, not all.) Just know, there are some very open and accepting of any opinion kind of people in her fandom as well. I agree with Danny as far as the Scooter thing goes. It’s very telling that a lot of his stars spiral.

I mean the death threats are literally not ok, Taylor also received them and more (not that I am comparing since any death threat especially to family and children is NEVER okay) but it is odd how they kept referencing the same tweet over and over as if there were only a few, idk its odd, and those are not true Swifties and are the minority which are always the loudest voices in these situations, but she went through the same thing and more. she had to go into hiding and Scooter was representing Kayne at the time of her downfall in 2016 so it is a real shame that someone close to her such as Scott would even consider selling the company including her masters to him, maybe sell the company but not her masters, its not about a legal issue here its about what is right and how the music industry needs to change. her recording her own music is also legal but they fail to highlight that of course and that is the only argument they have in the second half of this so called biased documentary. the experts on his version are all Taylor swift haters and only talk about her , never really him. and the fact that he wanted an NDA from Taylor to promise she would only say nice things about him in the future and for him to say in an interview " I have never had anyone say anything bad about me before and it was like overnight everyone was against me" sounds like these NDAs are more popular with the people he works with than is shown in this documentary..... he is clearly playing the victim yet saying Taylor always plays the victim but all she is doing is standing up for herself and her art/work and of course as stated in the song "The Man", it is always portrayed differently when a woman stands up for herself especially in an industry dominated by white men..anyway, this is a waste of time and clearly paid by scooter to shine him in a better light but I don't think they even accomplished that...just more promoting hate in the world and this only makes me angry to watch and talk about so I feel like I got it out of my system, but hope you keep in mind how completely bias and untruthful this whole thing is and was portrayed...

Netanyahu and Hamas are taking each other and everybody in their way is in danger every single day, because that’s what happens when terrorists and authoritarian leaders go to war. Even the UN and the international community aren’t stepping in, you think somebody is going to listen to a white woman who writes songs about breakups and feelings? The frustration is valid. The target, however, is not. Take those frustrations to government officials in your location. Keep talking to people who actually have power in that arena. Not celebrities. It’s just silly. Not to mention that this situation has been going on for CENTURIES in this part of the Middle East. You think Taylor Swift is gonna round out a song about a boy making her feel like she’s in high school again and fix everything happening there by just mentioning it? lol would that the world were really that simple, kid.
