This black-and-white Castle Film newsreel created at the outset of WWII shows the changes in United States factories and personnel as the war effort ramped up. Most of the footage shown is from the pre-war period. America is shown as the "Arsenal of Democracy" producing men and materials for the war. Basic training and testing of military equipment is shown, along with construction of jeeps, tanks, ships, guns, planes, PT boats and other war material. The title page shows the Liberty Bell ringing in the background (0:18). The film begins with a naval cannon (0:30) and planes (0:31) being manufactured in a factory. Men weld and assemble tanks (0:54). A line of tanks drives across a field (1:02); a crowd watches as an aircraft carrier (1:12) and merchant ship pull out of port. Men stream into a Recruit Reception Center (1:25) and perform boxing hand-to-hand combat exercises. Men stab straw dummies with bayonets (1:40) and unfold a bridge to cross a river. They row across the river in rowboats (2:04) and ride horses. Men transport a tank across the river and fire howitzers (2:30). Tanks drive over rough terrain, demolishing trees and obstacles (3:03). Two men look through a scope in a trench (3:23); men fire howitzers and storm across a field. A soldier sets off explosives (3:43). A tank drives over a bridge (3:57). Soldiers drive scout cars through brush and over hills and rough terrain (4:08). A naval cannon is fired at the Panama Canal as a guard stands watch (4:37); the canal served as an important link and supply conduit between the Atlantic and Pacific. A fleet of planes flies overhead (4:42). Soldiers with American and Marine Corps flags (4:46) march while guarding the canal. Soldiers lead pack horses along a narrow path to transport supplies (4:53). A closeup of the barrel for a large artillery piece marked Watervliet Arsenal on the barrel (5:12) an arsenal in New York originally started in 1813 that produces army artillery and guns. Soldiers wheel anti-aircraft guns across a field and fire them (5:23). A pilot closes his cockpit canopy (5:49) and a fleet of bombers takes off in formation as the Marine Corps Hymn plays (6:09). Soldiers jump out of planes with parachutes (6:41) and land on the ground. Ships from the U.S. Navy’s Mosquito Torpedo Squadron race toward the New York coastline (7:44). The PT torpedo boats go by the Brooklyn Bridge (7:51) and Statue of Liberty (7:53). A fleet of U.S. Navy ships maneuvers while a formation of bombers flies overhead. A closeup of a 30-ton super bomber (8:37); a submarine surfaces (8:50). The film ends with soldiers marching, a call to “Uncle Sam’s manpower in industry,” and the American flag and U.S. Capitol (9:26).

The recruits were wearing British soup bowl helmets during training, in the very early days of WWII. By the time Pearl Harbor occurred the US had designed a unique helmet used by the Army.

They weren't wearing British helmets. Those are the same style as the US used in ww1.

My first reaction was that these were the "British soup bowl helmets" but then I did a little research. Turns out that in WW I, America was very unprepared and had to raise an army quickly. We adopted the English helmet and created an American variant that was basically the same. It was designed to protect troops serving in trenches. There were slight changes during the inter-war period and was standard issue for Army troops at the time the war started for America in December 1941. The iconic M1 helmet was approved for production in June 1941 and rapidly replaced the old helmet thereafter. We can tell this video was indeed very early in the war not just because of the old-style helmets but because of older tanks, horse cavalry, "Campaign Hats" worn during training, and other 1930s elements of the awakening US armed forces and industrial might that utterly defeated Germany and Japan. Under those helmets were American GIs that our enemies thought were soft and decadent. Turns out the Germans and Japanese made a mistake to make "The Greatest Generation" mad...

Yeah, showing gay people is "crap" ... one of our best NCO's was gay. Multiple Iraq and Afghan deployments. Purple heart, CAR, NAM, and everything in between. He was there before me and still there after I left, working on his 15th year. And as far as pregnant women go, people in the military have personal lives too, especially if it's their career, and should be allowed to have kids. I mean, damn.

@@JedediahTombstone But when the focus of your ad is to encourage Americans to enlist and you focus on projecting a liberal view, then it is truly concerning. What is so patriotic about having two moms? I have nothing against gay people, but what does that have anything to do with joining the army?

It wasn't dangerous for Americans though. We didn't even join the war until December 8, 1941 - almost halfway through it, and after tens of millions of European, British, Russian, Australasian, Canadian, and even African people had been killed by the German, Japanese and Italian military. Despite repeated cries for help from all those countries and continents, we refused to get involved, time and time again. The *only* reason we *did* get involved in the end, was because Japan bombed Pearl Harbor in Hawaii. Regardless of all the _'creative propaganda'_ the US government continues to have us believe, right up until today, we were utterly spineless when it came to helping our _'friends'_ in their time of need. As a nation, we have very little to be proud of in global military history.

"The arsenal for this and other democracies" knowing when it was stated we were sending supplies to Russia and China (even non-communist China wasn't a democracy and run by warlords). The tanks shown in this film were already obsolete for WW2. 3:30 Belly jeep is pure propaganda and never used but it does look pretty cool. 5:15 Huge naval gun used to sink tiny sailboat. 6:10 Navy planes used to strafe a sinking sailboat. Thanks to John Phillips Sousa America did have best marshal music by far though I think Britain probably had the best patriotic songs.
