The outlier part of Helene was its path to the north where at the same time a low pressure system brought high water and flooding just shortly before the tropical storm brought heaps more rainfall and massively amplifying the flooding. Most people have family in neighboring states that let them stay, the next is hotels in cities not in the path of the hurricane, the next is FEMA designated location to shelter like a community center. In Texas when gulf cities get hit people just come to the cities too far inland for it to reach and stay till storm moves on.

A very quick Google told me that " Since 1960, 31 Atlantic hurricanes have reached Category 5". This is from 1960, which is used because this is when they first at satellite images. Before this, they didn't know what happened out at see with great accuracy. What's about to happen with Milton is an awful thing. But also not new sadly.

In 1921 the hurricane peaked at a cat 4 and 140mph, Milton now is cat 5 170mph and could still strengthen further. This is also the 3rd hurricane system in the Atlantic right now and the 3rd major hurricane to hit the USA in 2024

The difference in the origin of the both storms where one came from the gulf and the 1921 storm came from the Caribbean. Also maybe the rate of intensification? I think milton has the third quickest intensification rate in the Atlantic. The 1921 storm was nowhere as ‘strong’ as Milton as well as how long it is maintaining cat 5 status.
