“Blah, Blah, Blah”: Youth Climate Activists Slam Political Inaction at U.N. Summit Ahead of COP26

Thousands of youth climate activists marched through the streets of Milan last week demanding world leaders meet their pledges to the Paris Climate Agreement and keep global temperatures from rising by more than 1.5 degrees Celsius. The protest came at the end of a three-day youth climate conference, ahead of the United Nations’ COP26 climate summit in Glasgow. Activists at the Youth4Climate conference slammed political inaction on the climate crisis and world leaders’ vague pledges to reduce carbon emissions. “Historically, Africa is responsible for only 3% of global emissions,” said Ugandan activist Vanessa Nakate. “And yet Africans are already suffering some of the most brutal impacts fueled by the climate crisis.” Swedish activist Greta Thunberg mocked the jargon politicians use to talk about climate and the environment. “Net zero, blah, blah, blah. Climate neutral, blah, blah, blah. This is all we hear from our so-called leaders: words - words that sound great but so far has led to no action,” said Thunberg. “Our hopes and dreams drown in their empty words and promises.”

Or perhaps we need a new governmental system that has an entirely new relationship to the dynamics of capitalism. The foremost concern of such a new system should be how to proof it against the inevitable infestation by persons with strong psychopathic or sociopathic impulses. Because they will inevitably find support in the ignorant, the stupid, and the belief rather than evidence based portions of the populace, not to mention those lower level scoundrels who wish to gain power through an association with such a psychopath who has risen to power: the sycophants, toadies, and yes-men.

Facebook knows by their own research that Facebook use is psychologically harmful to young females-- response -- no changes. Google gives the world the AI computed shapes of all the known proteins used in human metabolism, the medical achievement of the decade if not the century -- given to humanity for free. Not only factory farming but raising thousands of animals in confinement. In Iowa we are surrounded by thousands of hog confinements, in some areas, you can't even go outside the smell is so obnoxious. It's polluted our water, has been draining our water aquifers, polluted our air and contributed to the dead zone in the gulf of Mexico. It's also one of the cruelest ways to raise animals. Back in 2020 during the height of the pandemic, when slaughter houses were shut down because of covid, thousands of hogs were literally roasted alive inside their confinements, a slow, agonizing, painful death. Nothing was done to stop this barbaric massacre!

I understand what you’re saying but people don’t always have choices, especially not the lower classes . We’re caught in the system. We need major structural changes in the form of govt policies and regulations. I don’t drive an SUV but I have to drive a car to work. I have no alternative if I want to work. Raj Patel talks about how worrying about our personal “environmental footprint “ is a bit of a scam in his anti-capitalism book A History of the World in 7 Cheap Things. I will always vote though for the person I believe is going to be courageous enough to make major changes. As well, I’ve done a lot of reading about agriculture ( I know you said you’re vegetarian) but veganism is NOT actually better for the environment. Organic poly culture agriculture is what we need, and that type of farming requires ruminants such as grass fed cows in order to avoid the use of chemical fertilizer. Animals should be free range and they are a necessary part of the farm ecology. Although ….hunting non endangered wild animals is better for the environment than agriculture. It’s such a shame we wiped out the Buffalo herds in our attempt to wipe out the indigenous people.

Very uneducated in my opinion north America used to be covered in glaciers, Africa used to be green and florishing fields, humanity being self preservationist simply migrate to places more inhabitable. Much of the reason for this has to do with natural climatic cycles of our planet, in tandem as I might add being left out of the activists equations, the natural cycles of the sun. Truly someone should come up with a plan to launch Giant fire extinguishers into the sun, we are seeing and going to see for a 15 year cycle (I'm going off memory) where solor flairs are going to be brutal. That being said I try to be a good steward of this place we live, I think it is wise, however these people who claim they are advocates of saving the planet are either 1.disengenious 2. Here in Fresno, CA, we've had ashes falling from the sky for the last few days. The air is so smoky it looks like fog. This morning when I went out to my car I had to wipe the ashes off of the windshield to see. Thing is, this isn't a one off -- its been like this every summer for the last five years here. This is nice but a huge, huge part of the population is never going to take them seriously because they are, well, kids, and people don't like being lectured and said what they should or should not do by children. That being said I don't doubt for a second they are sincere and I personally believe in the rightfulness of their cause. I'm just doubting they are the right heralds for it. I am wondering if it might even, in a way, create more harm than good, by decredibilizing the cause. I wish the subject would be depoliticized, and just an affair of rationality and science, not emotion, but I guess we don't live in that world, so right now it looks like we are kind of screwed.

I imagine some people living during the roman empire also thought they could stop the collapse of it. But I suspect that once the dominoes have started falling it's already too late. If you look at the history of climate change denial and inaction you might think we could change our mind. But we lack the intellectual infrastructure to even talk about solutions. We can't imagine it. A planned economy to restructure how much of our industry works? Degrowth? Ending consumerism? Rationing commodities not based on the free market but based on need? Maybe you will meet a few fellow travelers on the road, but even then if you try to go deeper at the root causes. Why do we allow sociopaths and sociopathic ideology to rule and those people to get into positions of power? Should we require a mental health pass before people are allowed to become a boss? An editor of a newspaper? Should news media and social media be owned by oligarchs and run for profit? Do we need to evolve? Do we need to genetically engineer our offspring to be smarter and have more empathy? We can't even talk about these things without names being implied. It's over. We're going all the way to +8C or even +12C and the carrying capacity will be reduced to less than a billion. If we're lucky and there won't be a black swan event at the wrong time we might be able to clean up and rebuild over the next hundreds of years. And HOPEFULLY learn that we are out of the sandbox. And that we can't let sociopaths and narrow minded idiots rule the world.

We need next gen nuclear energy in our conversation. Cannot make the kind of energy we use without it. I live off grid, I love my panels, but aint gonna power an electric car with that. Not even a clothes dryer. Faux environmentalism, or useful in certain situations. Policy makers and scientists need to start listening to permaculturists, instead of relying on corporations. Our privatization of r&d, our neglected role as caretakers in our habitats and no progress or funding for thorium energy research. A shift of magnitude is happening, will it get caught up on our current flaws and settle in a similar place?

My friend, fossil fuels were not a choice, that anyone made it was just a natural development of human civilization. Burning dung is dirtier than most fossil fuels, Burning wood is more polluting than heating with gas. Just like we moved on from burning dung and wood, we must now move on from burning oil and even natural gas, and the time is approaching faster than most realize when clean sources of energy will predominate. Firstly in the affluent countries then in time in most.

@@SkyRiver1 No, actually electric cars developed in parallel to combustion cars. The history is: big companies like Shell bought patents and oil prevailed. Electric cars always were a better option; no smoke fume, soundless etc. I'm not making an hypothesis here. I'm stating historical facts. Watch: who killed the electrical car. It's one instance of the choice. The oil lobby hired the same tabaco legal firm to make propaganda and paper-driven wars to stay legal. Merchants of Doubt would be another great and informative documentary. That's about it, my friend.

The problem with north americans are always the same: they were educated through propaganda and hollywood films. Every bad aspect of history boils down to: that's an evolution processes. That's not things have shaken out for most of history. USA emerged through WWII because it was coward; they didn't enter the war until it was decided. In the mean time, it grew a industrial complex which sold arms to both sides. Actually, since then, wars have been fought just for the sake of keeping the army industry investments giving dividends. That's a little of American history you should have in school. Listen to the greatest condecorated marine general, J. Butler. Listen to "War is a Racket" speech of his. It will shake the Disney-fabricated narrative of the world... but you know, Walt Disney was a Nazi sympathizer, so who cares... better learn true history

@@branquinho8444 I did some research on EVs some time ago and have found that they were first developed in the 1800s, and they were even economically viable production-wise at about the time of the American Civil War. I was kinda stunned to find this out. Of course the big problem was not much range and no charging network at all. ICE vehicles did not present this problem as all you needed was someone with a big tank to hold gas and sell it to people, not a whole electrical grid. I mean people did not even have electricity in their homes yet. So. . . I did see that documentary about the GM electric cars that were all crushed. If you had one today it would be worth a fortune. Apparently the people who had them liked them very much despite the range issue. Tesla is to be coming out with a 20k EV soon and that will mean a lot. And they do have a viable charging network, that they are going to make available to everyone, including their competition. Personally I like Tesla quite a bit, a corporation with ethics and vision. I have my order in for a cybertruck and hope by the time they are released I can afford one.
