I wish you gave some numbers for the baking, so people can apply it to their own lifestyles and housing markets, haha
@ibitha

i mean, it’s not really her job to do that hahah. people should research for their own life regardless of the situation. she’s just a home baker, who shares what she does. it’s not her responsibility to give recipes, baking/business advice, or an income template. there are plenty already out there, people just choose to be a little lazy. edit: y’all probably are mad at the “lazy” part. if you’re offended, it’s probably cause you are too lazy to do the research on your own~ the truth can feel “rude” at times. yes lazy isn’t the best word to use, but can’t find another to see why other baking templates on the internet wouldn’t work 🤷🏽‍♀️

It really depends on where you live ($$), what your financial situation is going into it as a business, whether there are other lines of income in your household, your own skill as a decorator and a business owner, the laws and regulations of your region, and the level of demand in your area. It’s very, very difficult to run a financially sustainable cake business alone from home, especially in the beginning when you are pouring so much of your cash back into the equipment you need to scale up to profitability. And the comment about working 24/7 wasn’t a cute joke, in case anyone watching this video didn’t take that line seriously. 💕
@sorchahannah288

Not to say it’s not a dream that can turn into a successful business- but as someone who is working full time trying to build this dream and doing a good job thus far, there’s a lot of factors to consider that can make or break you.

so many people are told to make their hobbies their jobs but that takes the fun out of it. theres a lot of pressure if that is your only source of income and like you said at the end, it would be hard to separate work and leisure time
@Havis_Princess
@Havis_Princess Год назад
It could be a part time job which would be fun. You have a job that pays your Bill's especially if you have a partner or someone else bringing in income to help, and then you make money off of a hobby you enjoy and at any point can turn it back into a normal hobby without serious repruccusions I hope I spelt that right lol But yea if it's your only source of income then it would be hard for sure.

50% of businesses go under. 90% of independently owned restaurants go under. This can be for many reasons but the main one is that being a successful baker isn't just about your baking abilities but about your accounting, money management, ability to correctly estimate costs. Luckily these days there are a lot of tools to help people track expenses and such. It is something to think about.

Separating work from home is important! I've been WFH for two years now, recently a fam member came over and asked "does it feel weird that the office is next to your bed now?" and I realized _that_ was what was stressing me out without even being consciously aware. Did some rearranging, it helped a bit. sorry for the long winded comment hahaha I just don't hear people mention that often! cake looks divine, of course 🤤👌

I used to be a Truck Driver In the Oil field... I averaged about $1500 a week take home. I have since become disabled, divorced, got married to my current husband, who was also a driver, his last job only brought in $1200 a week. Not bad when you own everrything out right! But he was forced into retirement, so I am trying to earn enough to stay a float. I am not looking to do maybe 3-4 cakes a week if that. He helps, mostly just cleaning up after me, and keep stuff stocked or hands me stuff. He also helps around the house so I can focus on the cakes. We both loved Driving. It was both our passion most all our lives. And to lose it, crushed us both. But learning how to turn another Love and Passion into money has been awesome... Challenging but awesome... Today I delivered a cake for a young man who just graduated the Marine Corps... The lady never ordered a custom cake, but said it was the best she ever had, and the design far exceeded her expectations. Even though I know there are other, more experienced, better Baker's than myself, it really did help me understand, again I am where I need to be. And I may not be making Big big bucks, I can make enough to Survive

@littlelady3895
@littlelady3895 Год назад
@@src3360 yes it is. I can't explain the excitement I feel when someone loves their cake. When a friend of the family or a friend of a friend gets/buys my cakes, it takes all I have not to keep asking if they know if the ppl liked their cake. And if they didn't or something was not what they expect I worry and try to figure out how to make it right or better for the next cake. Sometimes when baking and cooking all day, I will tell hubby, I will get that mess clean when I get up. And will wake up to a clean kitchen. Sometimes while I am cooking/baking, he will be in and just start cleaning up. It is a very big help. Lmao, I feel for those who have to clean up after themselves lmao. I know it makes a big difference in how much I bake when I have to clean up as I go, or afterwards. Being disabled, I can't work serval hrs straight, I get maybe a couple before I have to stop. So I have broke down cake making/decorating into steps. And I don't start the next step unless I take a break. If I don't, I may not get all the way through that step.

It also depends on where you live - it may actually be illegal to make a living off of home baking. Not sure what Canada is like, but in the US there are cottage industry laws that allow for home baking with restrictions - for instance, in Michigan you can only sell products that are safe to store at at room temperature and there's also a yearly limit on how much you can make. That limit is well below what you can reasonably live off of
@bezuslovnodina
@bezuslovnodina Год назад
In Canada too - not sure about all the provinces but in Ontario any food business has to be in the inspected commercial kitchen. No home bakers allowed. So add rent of a commercial kitchen to the costs (which is not cheap, In my city it is about $40 per hour🤪)

I feel like home baking is one of those things that sure it's possible to make a living but the amount of disruptions that it causes to your life (being stuck at home, always on the clock, never having room in your fridge/needing extra fridge, managing the business and finding a way to actually get customers to know about you) you might as well be working several full time jobs instead. Itll at least be less dishes that way.

I don’t have to talk to customers, take orders, do any book stuff whatsoever. That’s some of the most annoying work. I make more things on a bigger scale than a home bake could because most people wouldn’t have a giant mixer. Its admirable anyone could do it out of their home, it sounds like so much work

Wow! What part of the country do you live in? I think that plays a huge part as well. For example, I live in the Bay Area, California and rent is astronomically high, as are home prices (I.e., a very small 2 bedroom home with one bathroom and a small backyard and front yard in my city goes for over $1M at the lowest. Gas prices are currently at $6.50 for premium unleaded and $7.30 for diesel. Food costs and your other miscellaneous costs aren’t much different from those anywhere else, with the prevalence of online shopping so, if you live with family (like most people my age do), your wage stretches a lot further. I remember that back in college in Michigan, I made $7.50/hr. I think the federal minimum wage isn’t much more than that. In San Francisco, the city has its own minimum wage due to the cost of living-it’s just under $17/hr if I remember correctly. However, if you worked full-time in SF, making $17/hr, you’d never be able rent anything unless you were one of the lucky ones to win one of the low income housing lotteries.

It depends on your situation and where you live. If you have a family and are the only source of income unfortunately no. But if you are single, rent, and dont have big expenses like school then yeah definitely but you would have to be getting a good amount of orders or big orders, which means you'll never see the sun bc you'll be working 24/7. Most home bakers either have another job, their partner makes good money or are retired. But dont let this discourage you, if this is your passion do it but inform yourself and make sure you will be comfortable.

When she said that I went 🤔??? Because I live in the same province & city but my dad has been the sole earner of our 7 people household for 25 years making 50-70k max a year soooo ? Her standard of living is probably much higher, but if you’re talking about “survival”, 80k a year is a great salary for 1 person and you can be a homeowner in a few years if you add a second earner into the household. Affording a home in today’s economy is practically impossible as a sole earner nowadays. That’s still only 160k though, no where near her 200-300k mark lol. I bet she only has like 2 kids as well.

Because mortgage rates are going up and according to the latest stress test those were the rough numbers given. This is based off of Vancouver for a detached home, which is in the top three most expensive cities in the world to buy a house, but even some of the suburbs are getting up there. If you had bought earlier than about a decade ish ago then you’re good to go on a more attainable household wage. I surely don’t make that 😆. Just got lucky with my circumstances and continue to try my best!! I think cake decorating is an interesting one because it’s not a fixed income, so unlike my full time career there is “space” to make more in the cake decorating world--still though $200 k?! That’s a lot of cake!!! Are we making them for the queen??? 😂😂💕💕

I can confirm small houses in our city are $1M+ even in suburbs (1hr+ from city centre). A one-bedroom apartment in the city is around $1M. A comfortable home or apartment is $2-4M now depending which city/suburb. It's skyrocketed since the pandemic. 10yrs ago it was maybe 50% this. 20yrs ago it was 10% this. So unless you bought in the last 5yrs, it's unlikely you'll know just how ridiculous it is. I myself bought a small apartment 4yrs ago thinking I'd move into a house within a decade, yet couldn't afford to move again at this rate.

Mood. I like working with people, and feel I can do a great job with a lot of passion in customer service for a while, but the pay is so low and the housing costs are so expensive. It’s definitely hard work, but not as hard as something like farm work. We’re never properly staffed though because the company limits themselves to high schoolers. I get $11/hr, which was what the position paid for many years. I think policies like zoning with mixed use, no parking minimums, allowing smaller lot setbacks, allowing multi family dwellings, using transit priority signals, adding crossings to break up massive block sizes, raising minimum wage to a living wage and adjusting it annually with inflation (so everywhere could raise their prices to allow for basic quality of life to employees without risking being uncompetitive), including wider sidewalks/more pedestrianized sections/bike lanes/bus lanes/traffic calming, extending social infrastructure benefits to a comfortable income level/all citizens as an option, etc could help make the cost of living more affordable while keeping wages in line. I’m thinking of going into civil engineering to attempt to improve my city, but its so expensive that it’ll be difficult and take a while to make progress

omg that’s so wild to me, even part time in vancouver can be more than that. but a coffee here can be anywhere from $10-15. and it just goes up from there… my rent for a one bedroom in van is near 3k, without utilities. my school doesn’t even have dorms because of how expensive real estate is. and my biweekly grocery bill (given, I eat really healthy) is ~$350 for one person. minimum wage here is over $15 but it’s still a shock every single time you have to tap your card. i guess it’s all comparable though because we make more per hour but have to balance it out with paying a lot more, so our money just doesn’t go as far as it would in the states. $300k CAD is also ‘only’ $230k USD. your income if you lived in Canada would be an extra 3k.

There is good and bad points to home business. Giving yourself rules is okay, but I have never done well having anyone tell me I HAVE to do something. Even if it’s me. 😢😂 I’ve heard it’s a “LEO” problem. IDK

@@heather5540 Vancouver; 3rd most expensive city in the world to buy a home. Mortgage rates also just went up even more so who knows now 🤷🏻‍♀️. To be fair, you can LIVE as a Vancouverite with much less, but you won’t be owning a detached home. Average rent alone for a small condo in Vancouver is about $3000 (per month*) so it’s difficult to save for a down payment with those type of numbers too! Beautiful place to live, but inflation has been outrageous!
