HERE YOU WILL SEE THE “DAY AFTER” VIDEO OF A MASSIVE 10TH ALARM FIRE THAT COMPLETELY DESTROYED THE HISTORIC MARCAL PAPER FACTORY IN THE ELM WOOD PARK AREA OF NEW JERSEY.
Thanks for doing this aftermath video of this very devastating fire John! Just unbelievable & sad to see! My prayers are for all the families that are now without a job & the businesses that are going to be hurt by this fire! I hope all the fireman came out of this without injuries as well! Thank you again for all you do for the work that all fireman do for the safety of their communities.I was also glad to hear you were doing better.
Thank you so much for this video! I watched the fire and was so saddened. I've watched your other videos of fires and have been amazed at the areas you get too, to get good coverage. You do a better job than the news channels!
Devastating beyond, so very sad for all those left unemployed, sad for the town. The fire footage was horrific. Praise the Good Lord no injuries or loss of life. Fire Fighters were outstanding, it had to be extremely difficult, wind and cold were terrible. That horrific fire. Great video and audio...you reign supreme. Thanks!
I’ve seen your very extensive coverage (over 2 hours) unsure how you defrosted so quickly and now I see this morning after and all I can say is WOW! you are among the best up in that region! Remain safe buddy!
Thanks for venturing back to this fire scene in such cold. We appreciate your devotion to getting it all right! I do hope and pray you are not seriously frostbitten!! I’m cold watching this video again and it’s warm here!!🚒🇺🇸
Thanks for your coverage. I'm not from around there however from your coverage I was able to pull it up on Google Earth. Glad no one was injured in that inferno. This was the first 10 alarm fire that I have ever seen. Take care of yourself.
Thank you for sharing with us. The day after the antique store had a fire across the street from my mom's house it looked so haunted. There were so many people stopping in front of her house taking pictures. The back of the building was just gone. The fire started somewhere in the attic.
A rare glimpse of Ice becoming a masterpiece. I just wanted to thank you for showing an ‘aftermath’ video. I love those, as well as those from the actual Incident of course. Very rarely are ‘aftermath’ videos shown so thank you. This is honestly fascinating. Be well.
Wow! I thought the video of the fire was frightening...this is straight up eerie. People were commenting about how weird it must have been to be cold the night of the fire; this shows just how cold it was. Stay safe my friend.
I watched a few Vid's during the fire and was amazed at the quickness of destruction... The fire was fueled and just a beast... Looking at the after math is saddening...So many jobs and support jobs will be lost... It brought me to the reality things change in a heart beat...Thanks for the follow up John...
Excellent video depicting the total destruction of a way of life in this town. Probably no one living here will not be affected by the losses you have shown in your video. Also a telling look at what fire does to the inner and outer structures of fire buildings. The twisted metal really tells a story of the heat generated by this fire......A terrific job, JJ and Skyler. As always, you guys go above and beyond. I hope your medical issues resulting from your coverage of this disaster are not terribly serious. Thanks again.
What a unique look (the after). What beauty out of such devastation. As I sit here watching this, I have the a/c running. I live in Australia and we have opposite seasons to the US , I can't fathom how cold it is there right now. You said you might have to go to the hospital for frostbite. Thank you for doing this as well as ALL of the emergency responders. Please stay safe.
It looks so surreal, almost picturesque. Kona like gingerbread buildings covered in glazed frosting. Incredible damage. Great video JJ. Take good care of yourself.
Thanks so much sir for doing this. You have covered more fires that I have watched. This one is a crying shame. I cannot tell you how many times I have gone past it on my parkway trips to south Jersey. I hope they rebuild but somehow I don't think it will happen,,,,
I tell you what brother your my hero because I have never had frost bite an ice heard that’s very painful from ww2 veterans an you just keep filming an I don’t have words man for how much respect I have for you I can’t explain how much your a good man I love your videos an they are very educational for me as a firefighter but I tell you I support you brother like I said your a special person an I AN MY FAMILY RESPECT ✊ YOU BROTHER we all love your work GOD BLESS YOU
That was a great video. I saw lots of video of it burning but this showed just how little survived. To my knowledge, no one was seriously hurt thank God! I hope they are careful around these unstable walls, etc. York, PA lost two brothers the day after a fire when they were putting out hotspot and the shell collapsed on them. Hoping they rebuild bigger and better! So many families depended on the plant to put food on the table. Time will tell.
IF they rebuild, I highly doubt it will be in NJ... Taxes and building expenses would be too high...No, they'll move somewhere in which everything, including labor, can be had for cheap...
Even in the eerily quiet stillness of the charred remains, twisted metal, shattered bricks, there is beauty in the sunrise... and in the ice shrouded remains. I pray the community can bounce back, and thank God no one was seriously injured. John... please take care of yourself. YOU are also a treasure we do not want to lose. I hope you sought medical care and that no permanent injury occurred. How can I send you a private message?
now that I watched this entire video I will say your more than a fire buff you show sadness and credit historic value of the loss of the Building, Personnel and the town. Last night when I watched your main video a staging are spoken of a few times was "Dunkin Donuts" and immediately I said to myself I bet the majority of their sales came from the employment of Marcal..........How sad! John you are more than a Fire Buff you and your narration work make you a historian! I am saddened to hear this work may have hurt you so I say hope the damage to your skin is not that bad and/or you can heal from it quickly! You know you are in many persons heart and thoughts John! Many of the adjoining businesses that appear closed may not have had there power put back on? Again remembering that structure less involved as you first entered the fire ground area then later fully involved and you caught different sections of it collapsing several portions of the four story building reduced to a floor and a half or less. Was that fire Photographer shooting that damages SUV, Skyler? Did he take a picture of you while doing this frigid work
YES, THAT WAS SKYLER INDEED! IT IS A TRAGIC AND DEVASTATING LOSS TO THAT COMMUNITY INDEED BOB! ONCE AGAIN THANKS SO VERY VERY MUCH FOR YOUR CONCERN AND KIND WORDS ALWAYS! ;o)
JJ, well done. I feel for you on this one, I grew up in the county and did some freelance fire photog work in the late 80's. I remember that plant well from all the times I passed it. Usually in slow motion, sitting in traffic on 46.
Heard this on the scanner at work. I'm in Washington State... followed this all night. Couldn't have happened at a more unfortunate time. So cold. Peace, love, and prayers for all in the community , and the firefighters who are epic champions. Heard them calling to relay trucks to get them water. Heard them calling for pressures because all their gauges had frozen. Bless them all.
When I watched your videos on this tragic fire about nine months ago, and realized this was an old paper mill, I realized no way will they be able to save it. Generations of paper dust everywhere hidden, etc. No sprinkler system could probably have helped much, if any. It was just too massive of a fire. So, many months later, since I see no new comments, I wonder if they found a cause? And, will they be able to rebuild on the existing land? I realize that present day safety requirements may make it impractical for the owners to do so. JJ, I hope your frost bite has healed with no permanent damage. Take care, my friend!
Hi from the UK. I've watched two videos of this devastating fire. I'd like to ask, are you an office FDNY photographer? We have nothing over here we we get videos from active fire locations. Also, has the site been fully cleared and if so, do they intend to rebuild?
First of all, great video work all around. Great job to all first responders who responded. This was a huge inferno. Also, great to see no one injured, especially in such a huge facility blaze. I did some research on Soundview / Marcal. They are owned by Atlas Holdings in Greenwich CT. It's a multibillion dollar corporation. It appears that Soundview also owns the smaller plant on the other side of the railroad tracks as well as what appears to be a huge distribution center on the other side of route 80 (I 80). I would suspect that Atlas board members met this weekend about financials on rebuilding and Soundview / Marcal board members probably met today on production, supply and logistics as they have a fantastic customer base and with a decent profitability and great product reputation. It appears they have a smaller plant in Vermont. We shall see and I am hopeful and I would imagine that they will rebuild in this location due to marketing in the tri-state area (Marcal sign on route 80 is invaluable). I would imagine that insurance funds and possible funds from NJ and Bergen County would go towards reconstruction. I would imagine that reconstruction will be one year. In the mean time Soundview / Marcal will need to brainstorm to get in some new equipment and maybe some temporary warehouse space for production all the while ensuring that supply distribution is not interrupted during all of this. I hope the union, NJ and Bergen County can chip in for those who end up on unemployment which comps at half to two thirds of a regular pay check (usually not enough to make ends meet). I was born in Teaneck back in 67 - not too far from here.As the saying goes, when the going gets tough, the tough get going....something they do very well in NJ.
JJ me lad! Again, wondrous work. I also agree with all those below about getting a drone (a DECENT drone!) I have no idea what the NYC laws on such aircraft are, but you might look into it! I hope your hands are ok.(I almost froze my hands 20 years ago, and still "pay the price" when they get cold!) Again, my kudo's for your wonderful work. AND STAY SAFE, YOU DINGBAT!! ;-)
You have to be licences by the FAA to operate a drone, I believe the paperwork comes in the box. Also you need additional permission by each of the cities and they have rules about how close and where you can fly a drone, some ban them over public parks, etc.
I appreciate your hard work and risk you're taking to do these videos I don't know if I could be able to help with this but I'd like to maybe we could do a live feed and people could donate for the people that worked at the Mill that are going to be needing help I don't know just an idea there should be some kind of this would be something set up some kind of fun for these folks that were affected by this fire
I'm from the Chicago suburbs. I just watched this video on RU-vid. This is so devastating and sad for the workers and community. The firefighters are heroes. I hope no one was killed or injured. Prayers for all the employees and families. Also prayers for the many firefighters who risk their lives. They are awesome.
Hi: Thank you for showing the fire and what it looks like after and in the daylight. Last night about all you could was RED of the fire. Yes, like you said, the area is what is going to be hit the hardest. 24 hours later and the fire is still not dead cold. When you walked by the little building I could still see black smoke coming out, and the Fire fighters were still pouring water on the mess. From what you showed and Google Map the fire wiped out a whole block. Is that correct? Thanks for sharing.
I've seen this fire from start to finish. The recordings are incredible. It was apocalyptic. I am deeply concerned and sad. The pictures the day after show an area as if it were from another planet. Clouds of intoxication still rise from individual embers. I come from Germany, here the employees would be helped immediately, they would receive unemployment benefits and health insurance would continue to be paid. Open wage claims would be reimbursed by the state. Unfortunately, this is not the case in the USA. Because, no one who worked here became unemployed through no fault of their own. My name is Uwe and I come from Aachen, also known as the world equestrian sport CHIO Aachen.
This is how you knew you entered the city of Paterson by just seeing this building's big red logo. Saddening just to not see the same sight anymore. Rest in peace, you big, beautiful factory.
@@jjrrhh1983 Elmwood Park is a suburb of Paterson and part of the greater Paterson area. The same goes for West Paterson (Woodland Park), Totowa, Little Falls, Clifton, Wayne, etc. And Elmwood Park was once called EAST PATERSON. Hawthorne was unofficially called NORTH PATERSON and was part of Paterson's 2 northernmost wards. So yeah, this guy is not too far from the truth. And by the way, Paterson is the oldest city in the Bergen/Passaic County area and was the most important! Not a small mediocre town that changed its name because the residence didn't want any association with the city across the river.
Sorry for the loss, between the wind, the cold and the material burnt there was no saving it. The building looks to be pretty old and probably no updated sprinkler systems. If there was one that was updated to the size of the building it might have been saved
Great Footage John. You need to think about adding a drone to your arsenal. Set yourself up on Patreon or GoFundMe & I'm sure some of your fans will support you.
in the Early conversation on the radio traffic, if was said 'there appears to be a sprinkler pipe or something here" , ia there any word of investigation to this may be a ignition point , (short electrical circuit ) ? great video again !
Usually the culprit is a bad bearing somewhere on a paper machine or a conveyor. I heard that this mill had a couple of fires very recently so it sounds like maintenance wasn't a high priority . I Seriously doubt that they rebuild.
this looks apokalyptic - as the fire itself did... i only can hope that a solution for all the emplyees and businesses can be found. thank you John for doing this - i know it is not verry cosy outside right now ;)
Watched You Last Night ' & In Ny ' Another Cold Night Minus the Wind ' Watched the News Conference With the Governor & Chief ' Excellent Footage of The Fire "
This a Perfect Example Where Automatic Fire Doors & Sprinklers would have Made a very Big Difference & You would Not have Lost This Wonderful Historic Structure.
Well it looks beautiful, but it is going too cost a bit too rebuild if ever. Again great footage thnx. And watch out for frostbite mate hope you got some good thermic gloves.
How many local hospitals, schools, government buildings, restaurants, and other businesses in the NJ/NY/Pa area could you spot that DIDN'T use Marcal products? End of an Era...
It was an epic battle - and that MARCAL sign stood proud fully illuminated while the raging inferno devoured the structure - then it went dark and finally the fire brought it down into a twisted heap.
Wow, when I started my trucking career I made many trips into and out of this plant. Got to know the guards and shipping clerks pretty good. Haven't been there in 10 years. Saddened to see this.
It looks very bad. Our hearts go out to the company, the employees, the firefighters and you. Take care of yourself. I wish you and everyone a happy new year anyway.
man ,I hope you have your wooly's in ...it is damn cold everywhere. The cold front looks to be on the move , and then a warm front of thaw , then a mess !
John terrific video, even better than one of the fire. Please, please get yourself better clothing. Go to a sporting goods or construction workers store, You need long johns, snow pants, a hooded parka, very good temp rated boots a face mask. If your head, feet and core are warm and you avoid caffine and nicotine your body will send much more heat to your hands. For $80 to $100 you can get gloves which are warm and flexible.. I worked outside for 30 years and much of the time could take gloves off for delicate work, even with temps of minus 20 and windchill of minus 60. Do not injure yourself and stop your great videos.
