“Full gas mode” misunderstandings explained

Jeep recently ran an add that stated the Wrangler 4XE could be used in all electric mode, full-gas mode or a hybrid combination of the two. My feeling is that’s a mistake caused by a misunderstanding in the marketing department since there’s no way to make the 4XE use only the gas fuel source. Since the vehicle is always a hybrid, a full-gas mode isn’t available. So this video explains and demonstrates why eSave is not a gas-only mode.

Great timing for this video. I've only had my 4XE for a couple months now and has been mostly in-city electric miles so still trying to learn the different modes. Took it for a kayaking trip yesterday which was about 20 miles on the highway then another 10 miles of backroads and dirt-roads. Wanted to save the battery for the slower stuff and silent driving through the woods. When I got on the highway I had about 80% battery (it said 19 mile range) I put it in E-Save and by the time I got the backroads I only had 14 miles of battery. I had it set to "Battery Save" but it sure didn't seem to be saving the battery. I had my doors off, top down with the kayak on top and doing 75mph on the highway so I know that had something to do with it as the aerodynamics are horrendous like this. There are spots on the highway on my normal daily commute where I have no issue with the doors on, top on staying on battery but with the doors off and top down, it has to kick on the ICE to maintain highway speed. But this was only a 20 mile drive and used 5 miles of battery. When I got off the highway I switched to electric and had no issue staying on battery for the last 10 miles of half 55mph and the other half 10-30mph. When I got to the river after using battery on the backroads I had 4 miles of battery left so that was right on track. I changed it over to "Battery Charge" for the drive back and noticed it stayed right at the 4 miles and 20%, didn't go up any and my actual gas mileage was about 2mpg less than when in Battery Save. So was using more gas from the ICE just to keep the battery where it was. Doesn't seem very efficient and was wondering if there was something wrong with my system. I'll keep playing with it but can't see how this function would be even useable if you were going 100+ miles or driving over 60mph. I know it's asking a lot of this system in something like a Jeep but guess I had higher expectations.

I really appreciate the time and effort you put into your channel. I'm going to the local Jeep dealer on Friday to test drive a new 2022 Wrangler 4xe Sahara. They had one on the lot with all the options I wanted with white on white exterior. Hopefully, all goes well and I can put all your useful videos to practical use.

Unrelated question, I visited a dealer this week regarding the 4xe; he claimed the battery was not usable during the winter months in Canada. Is there anyone who has driven the 4xe over the winter in conditions similar to those we have in Canada? What was your experience? Did the electric mode work? Another question, how does the drive compare to a lower end model on 18" wheels? That was all the dealer could provide me for a test drive. First time driving a Jeep, and found the car bounced around and ride was not particularly smooth. Anyone who has driven both to provide a comparison? Thanks. Great job with the videos!

That’s a mixed bag. Some people in Canada went all winter long with no issues while others saw a lot of FORM. I wish I had a good answer as to why.

I haven’t found that it decreases efficiency. When the engineers were testing, they found the efficiency difference negligible. I go back and forth. I use 4H Auto when it’s raining.

The mere fact that the engine didn't turn on when you pushed the esave button is proof enough that this is not a "full gas" mode (despite the fact that you were over 95% charged). I do have one question though. It seems to like the power meter on the right side of the instrument cluster is reading out total power (ICE plus battery) not just electric/battery output when it is reading positive. Do you know the answer to that?

So if you go full throttle in E Save are you getting the full power of both the ICE and the electric motor? Or does that only happen in Hybrid mode? @@Wrangler4XEFans great info thanks So if you’re rolling, say at 30mph, and floor it in either Hybrid or E Save you’re still getting full power from the electric motor in both modes? And the electric motor pushes out the full power regardless of battery charge? Ie, in EVs I’ve owned, the lower the battery charge, the less power the electric motors output and the vehicle is slower

I have a few videos where I've tested things. Hybrid mode is your best bet. Esave asks the system to work harder and uses more gas as a result. It's thermodynamics at work.

Why does it have electric and hybrid mode? Don't they do about the same thing?
@Wrangler4XEFans
@Wrangler4XEFans 2 года назад
Think of the three modes as being a dial or a slider. At one end is electric and at the other end is the gas engine. The 4XE is always a hybrid but the three modes alter the bias of the hybrid system. Electric Mode is highly biased toward the electric side and ESave is highly biased toward the gas engine and hybrid is somewhere in the middle. The biggest difference between electric mode and hybrid mode is that electric mode greatly increases the demand threshold before engine start. You have to really punch it in electric mode to get the gas engine to start where in hybrid mode, it will kick in a lot easier when pulling away from a stop.

I continue to be confused by the "Engine" kW reading on the Power Flow screen. Is that the energy the gas engine is using from burning fuel, converted to kW? Or is that something else? I'm assuming when "Climate" shows a value that is kW being consumed by the AC or heat?

Great question. I wish we could see a better gauge of KW use and KW per miles. That would get us all a lot more used to the idea of mentally using KW as unit of measure we could relate to. Kind of like the learning curve of when LED bulbs came out and we all had no point of reference for how much light a 4w bulb puts out.

I'd like to see negative battery power numbers with larger magnitude (i.e. faster charging) when in E-Save mode set for charging. Like, -10 kW charging rate from gas engine in E-Save, or even a more adjustable rate from 0 to -30 kW for example.

There is a workaround, in the charging settings, you can program the charging start/end time to match your changer(level 1/level 2) time to match the to the desirable %. For instance : My charger level 2 does 100% charge in 120minutes. I can set it to charge in 96 minutes and get 80% battery by simple math.

@@charlieaguilar2853 If your daily commute can be handled in electric, use electric mode. You can leave it in hybrid mode but that can cause a lot of short engine runs. What we’ve learned over time is that a lot of short engine runs can cause oil dilution. The 4XE has software running to predict oil dilution. If the software believes you have an oil solution issue, it can trigger Fuel Oil Refresh Mode (FORM) which prevents electric only operation. Some people have had issues where they sort of get stuck in FORM and can’t clear it without an oil change. This issue gets way worse in cold weather. Esave is for when you want to save the electric range for later. It comes at the cost of poorer fuel economy.

You’d be surprised what it’s capable of in electric only. I rode with a friend who’s running 37s on his. We took a hill at Windrock Park that both of us assumed would force an engine start but it just ran straight up with no issues. The main traction motor is 134HP. That doesn’t sound like a lot to those of us that are used to how gas engines work. But that 134 HP doesn’t have to have a power curve to be achieved. But the nice things is that since it’s a hybrid, you can always get the gas engine and the second electric motor to kick in when you want it for the full 375 HP.
