CCTV footage appears to show Dr Michael Mosley falling over close to where his body was found as his widow said he “very nearly made it” to safety.
Dr Clare Bailey Mosley confirmed a body discovered on Sunday morning in a rocky area near Agia Marina beach on the Greek island of Symi was that of her husband, describing the loss as “devastating”.
Greek journalist Nicolas Vasiladis joins Talk’s Mike Graham to provide further updates about the tragic incident.

I'm an expat living in Greece. I've been to the island of Symi. NOBODY goes on hikes in the middle of the day in blistering heat. NOBODY does any walking in exposed unshaded areas during midday / early afternoon sun. It's exactly the same as saying let me hike around Giza, The Pyramids of Egypt. The heat bouncing off the rocks is physically palpable. It''s disgustingly & uncomfortably hot!!! I don't know why a Doctor had zero situational awareness & put himself at risk. Such a senseless tragedy.

English people don't realise what the heat can do to you. A bottle of water will last 5 minutes in 47 degrees heat. It looks like he thought he had enough for a 30 minute walk, ran out and went down the rocks as a shortcut as he saw the bar close by. He had no walking poles so fainted or tripped and the heat did the rest. We can walk all day in our country but in hot countries follow the locals and stay under shelter during the heat of the day. I went to a bar in Greece where the owner said they live their lives at nighttime. I ran out of water a few times cycling in the heat. You just don't realise how heat effects the body.

One trip or slip on that rocky, treacherous terrain would have done it, especially if affected by heat stroke. Although Michael would have been used to high temperatures, coming from Australia, we tend to stay indoors in that kind of heat. It's also easy to forget your phone, we have all done that. This seems a number of errors, easily done by anyone but sadly done by Michael, a popular, generous, compassionate doctor. A rarity in today's world. RIP Michael. @deborahcurtis1385
@deborahcurtis1385 2 месяца назад
@@elipotter369 Exactly so his judgement was already impaired. So when he should have realised he was on the wrong path, normally anyone would retrace their steps. But he powered on because his judgement was off in the first place to walk back alone and off with those who thought this was ok in someone who declared himself 'feeling unwell'. None of them were thinking straight they all had a bit of brain-melt. What worries me is when people go on holiday mode, they switch off commonsense... even doctors. Leaving the mobile phone behind is theoretically great, until it isn't. Keep it on you, but switched off, so you can still use it if and when you need to. I always drive with the mobile and the recharging chord and plug. Always. Just in case. I take a fully charged mobile with me when walking. Always. It's about good habits. Have a large amount of water on you PLUS electrolytes on hot days if you do have to go out. Don't go out in the heat of the day when over 50 years old for any length of time, and especially if you have any health issues, just stay indoors in the heat of the day and walk in the cool of the day. Going to the beach in 40 degree heat is just absurd ...if you're young you will get away with it but it's a mistake to imagine that because you're fit and older you can take it. Everyone's judgement gets impaired in the heat, even the younger sun bakers and people lounging in the shade the blazing sun is still doing damage and it reflects off the water; it's basic to understand this. The irony is doctors on holidays are as flawed as anyone else. We all need to face up to the risks and take sensible precautions and not let them slip even when on holidays. 40 degree heat is simply dangerous to be outside in, full stop. With climate change we must be vigilant. This is so painful I loved Dr Mosley.

During a trip to Alice Springs and Uluru (Ayers Rock), I saw many European tourists walking the rocky terrain in open toed sandals, wearing no hat and carrying insufficient water. Many of them flaked out and lay under the scant coverage of a scrubby tree and equally many were badly sunburnt on their pale skin. Please, if you come to Oz or travel to hot countries, be aware the sun can be lethal. It was so sad to hear of Michael Mosley's death. Apparently an otherwise fit man succumbing to heatstroke, maybe. No one is commenting on the fact that he had type two diabetes, and that he was managing it with diet instead of medication, which is why he developed the 5:2 diet, so there he was in 97° heat at age 67 in the bright sunshine. If he got lost, he did not get back to the residence in the predicted one hour, and this means that he was not there for dinner annd eating, so critical for managing his diabetes. We don’t know what time he came over that mountain and down the rocky slope, but if it was at night time, everything was against him. He may have been out of it because of the heat and diabetes, and when he was getting so close, he probably fell, maybe hitting his head. Imagine running into that fence, and not knowing what to do if indeed, he did get up against the fence. There was no gate through it. I wish that he had recognized he was lost and had turned around and retrace his steps back. There are the pictures they took of the path he followed, a very rocky little winding path that almost disappeared, when the path he was supposed to have taken was much wider and clearer.

All of the information is clearly available online. He had no phone. His rucksack was found 20 ft from him and his umbrella was next to him.

Not suspicious as some comment, but being a gp himself would u recommend anyone to go for a walk in that terrain and heat? Without adequate supplies?? Hindsight but sad really

Sorry but a body in 40°c heat for 5 days would smell grim. Metres away from a bar? Sniffer dogs used? .. No im not buying it!
@RhetoricalMuse

it wasn't that hot. There are weather channels that give an accurate reading. It was 37c the day he went missing (max!) and then it dropped down after that. Today it is only 32c. Don't believe everyhthing MSM tells you, they are proven liars. He went missing Wed and was found Sunday. He may not have died at that moment. We can hypothesize he was dead for about 3 days. A detectable decomposition smell begins within 24-48 hours as putrefaction sets in and intensifies any time between 4-10 days.

Do your research before making a dumb conspiracy theory insensitive comment. Cctv showed him walk at a good pace up the mountainous part near where he was found and walk back down toward the bar where you can get a boat back to pedi. It was 40 degrees. The cctv showed him stumble on his way back down and then he went out of view and was found by the fence. His bag was 20 ft from him. He may have had heart attack which may explain his rucksack being taken off. He may have hit his head when he stumbled. That has not been made clear.

No, not strange at all. Pensioner sets off to go home because he feels a tad ill. It's a straightforward path along a busy channel. Instead, he takes the wrong path, has to over exert himself on a longer trip, in unacclimatized heat and didn't make it.

Let us all simply celebrate Dr Mosley's TV ,Radio work and work as an author to bring complicated things to the public in simplistic ways the result is improving peoples lives, through understanding. Look for example irrespective of profession heatstroke has the same effect in human beings. When I was a young man on military ops in extreme temperatures seen guys develop it and then after long period of time an incongruous serge of energy followed by collapse. It creeps up on you. Being a Doc has little to do with it. All sorts can be going on during its development including thinking processes.
