Little wonder perhaps that there's a severe shortage of lorry drivers in the UK.
The government is trying to recruit thousands of them - but it's not proving easy. So we've been out with one long haul driver to find out what the job is really like.

@@ozhoneybadger I’ve been making this point for years, long before Brexit in fact. The world we live in today is a madhouse, the majority of the population are only interested in idiot celebrities and possessions.. I’ve given up trying to educate pork. I worked for years as an airline pilot (HGV driver of sorts), all the cabin attendants were interested in was finding a famous footballer or some such, one I knew married a plastic surgeon (for the money). It’s engineers, scientists and trades people that make the world go around, not footballers, or some pleb off strictly come dancing. Unfortunately your wasting your breath trying to point this out to the masses. Even my brother is a serial offender, telling me how extra special some boxer or snooker or darts player is. It never occurs to him to praise the hospital staff who stopped him losing a leg a few years back. Sigh!!

@@macjim if the UK were importing products with cream in, let's say from Turkey or Russia, wouldn't you want them certified as safe for us to eat? So does the EU. We left and refused to align food standards. Whose fault is that?

Government officials have used the NHS Trust as a way of "scoring points", yet they make little or no effort in updating systems, logistics and that's one talks about the recruitment process: some of those in there, aren't the envy of the world.

What a great attitude she has. Very difficult to work those shifts. Could be away three days in perfect conditions. could be a week if you have a couple of little hold ups en route. Respect.

It's a pity the cameras didn't follow her into Europe,the way drivers are catered for over there is the difference between night and day. Their facilities are amazing and either free or very cheap,with access to clean toilets,showers and decent food at decent prices. The UK in comparison is a 3rd world country,I feel especially sorry for European drivers coming over here,the ones I've spoken to are shocked at the way drivers are treated here...shameful!

In uk ...32£ for parking and @ 20£ or more for food in Europe with 10€ you eat well and the parking is free and in some services if you fill your truck with diesel more then 200 l you have the breakfast free..... no wonder why so many drivers left uk ..... and above all you are treated with respect ... Night and day... not even close....

True usualy there is truckdriver only restaurants with healthy meals some even with acomodation for the night to have a good night rest and a shower. for free or minimal charge as it its payed for by the company .

growing up in UK first then europe and only going back to visite family ...so many aspects of being in the UK is 3rd world country experiance. Coming to UK after over 2 years what with covid and all that..and all i can look forward to is a proper pint and prawn cocktail crisps...THATS.ALL!

Britain's the 6th richest nation in the world, and we didn't get there paying decent wages or investing in good infrastructure. We did it with financial fraud and ripping our work force off. Victorian wealth was mostly built on slavery. Nothing really changed. Pff...

I’m confused; who doesn’t respect Truckers? Why does anyone assume that Truckers deserve, need, or seek more respect? Why the stated assumption that they currently lack respect. Lack respect from whom exactly? I have no less respect for a Trucker than I do for a Doctor, a Policeman, a Refuse Collector, a Scientist, or a bloke who sculpts replica coffee beans from Owl poop. Why is the world seemingly so focused on being respected and from a position that assumes that no one has respect for anyone else?

Unfortunately, it's true. Road facilities for car and lorry drivers in the UK are very limited. I've driven to Europe, Africa and back for the past 10 years, and there is a major difference. Also, I know it's a different story, but the state of the roads in the UK are atrocious. I've driven in better roads in Tunisia and Algeria. Anyway, I am very grateful for all the UK is doing to improve. On the plus side, the UK is one of the safest countries to drive in, and driver manners are the best I've come across - usually.

The standards are so low for these drivers that they think weeing in a bucket, eating cold sandwiches for dinner and washing in dirty service station showers while paying £35 a night is a good thing. In France the Truck Service stops are top notch, drivers get treated great..No wonder why no one wants to do the job in the uk lol

True. That’s why you’ve got to kit your truck out with a microwave, coffee maker and your own wifi so you have Netflix and T.V to watch on the night. I never eat cold food, just take a weeks worth in the truck fridge and heat it up in the microwave so I can at least enjoy a hot meal every night. But yes the facilities in the U.K are diabolical compared to mainland Europe, which is exactly why I always do continental deliveries👍🏼

You are essential workers and should be valued, respected and paid as such. In our economy most essential workers, from care workers to cleaners, seem to be taken for granted, disrespected and definitely underpaid. There is something wrong with our values and with our system, to paraphrase Beatty.

Whilst I appreciate the long hours and work she does, I can't help but feel it's incredibly wasteful for doughnuts to be travelling three days by a lorry, same with the milkshakes.

Mind boggling isnt it? The flip side though is costs. Processed food of the dairy variety is so much cheaper here. That is down to raw milk being 6p/litre. In Germany it is heading to triple that. Skimming off the cream to make skimmed milk vastly increases the profit margins over here. The cost of transporting an individual donut is also rediculously low. There were probably about 300,000 in that lorry. Each tray can hold 120. 480 to a stack, 4 stacks to a trolley. That's 2000 near enough per trolley. An HGV does about 2000M/L of fuel on a bad day. It's about 1600KM so we are talking £1000 in fuel that's only 0.3p per donut. Call it 45 hours driving @£15 per hour. That's less than 0.25p/donut. So with the cost of the train or ferry we are talking 0.6p. If they are just 0.65p cheaper than the locals for a supermarket it makes sense. The supermarket probably takes 3 loads per week. So even if they are just 0.005p per donut cheaper that is a saving of near quarter of a million per year.

@@gordonlawrence1448 There's a program on tv here sometimes called Inside the Factory, and it's really interesting to see the large amounts of engineering that go into manufacture. One episode that stuck in my mind was one episode where it shows these frozen pizzas made in Italy that take about 3 hours for the ingredients to come into the factory to be turned into a pizza, and it's then sold in a UK supermarket for about £1, it's silly really. Whilst it's more efficient in terms of money, I can't see it being more efficient in terms of carbon production.

I think it also exemplifies how transportation is actually too cheap, insofar as the price of transportation has so far been really bad at capturing _all_ the costs it incurs, like pollution and the health problems it causes (and in turn, lost productivity caused by illness caused by pollution), lost time and reduced quality of life from having the extra traffic on the highways, etc.

@@Gump1224 Move to The Philippines man, best thing i ever did, currently back in Wales though, stuck here due to there Covid19 laws as they took the disease seriously and stopped all foreigners coming in in March last year. I have a small farm, bamboo house on the side of a volcano on Mindanao and a beautiful missus out there. They welcome foreign immigrants with open arms and you get a 3 year tourist visa, leave for 24 hours and get another 3 year visa. It's a beautiful place and the people are so friendly, sea is a s warm as bath water and as clear as tap water, 30-35C every single day. I can't wait to get back out there. Up until then i, like you, was worker i had 2 businesses both of them where me in the UK and working in the EU in Czech, austria, france, germany, netherlands, i had 2 people working for me, who loved it but Brexit ended both of those businesses, great, i knew this was coming as soon as the leave vote come in in 2016, so i looked for somewhere else that i would be happy as i knew that Britain was about to fall to pieces and go back 150 years all due to a racist leave vote. Worked out well for me though as i would never of even thought of going somewhere like the philippines to live due to what i thought i knew about the place which was half a dozen news stories about the president being a nutter and killing 30,000 people and other things, how wrong those stories are, the filipino people love there president, he killed 30,000 drug dealers on the streets top get rid of them as he could see norther way, it worked, drugs are no longer a problem there after he killed all the dealers. Poverty is rife but you only see it in the big cities. It's a brilliant place, best place on earth as far as i'm concerned.

You don't hear of shortages of train drivers and bad pay and conditions there. Strong unions perhaps? Britain has had trade unions for over 100 years because they didn't expect, even back then, companies to be as altruistic as brexitears have suddenly become now for some reason. Now that they need an excuse for their historic folly that is You numpties ain't fooling anyone with your sudden love for your fellow workers now. Where were you when the miners had industrial action, or teachers, junior doctors, council workers, or train drivers etc? Just fakes really aren't you?

Health and safety.Now, maybe if they let him stop train on route to use the onboard canteen, every 3/4 of an hour I could see your issues, but your talking about someones tea break here, you know? Where do you think we actually are Germany? Missing panels? What's underneath those panels then? What about turbulence? I've never seen even a bus going along with missing panels, or a lorry, let alone a train. Where do you think we are India?

@Josh your coming out with the same problems as everywhere else, which is a lack of inward investment by companies, but at least rail workers have better conditions than lorry drivers is my piont, so this money for them and the conditions had to be fought for. Even though they may take it too far, at least thats down to the individual, regarding the cup and the loose panel and they have s choice to be like that.

US trucking infra is good, but the pay can be low too (loading dock can be crowded and waiting is unpaid time), so it is also a tough job that young people won't do, but if you already have a truck and is doing owner operator then you can make decent money (60k USD to 100k USD if you are good), but still not great compare to the amount of work you put in (general contractor can pull 200k a year, commercial air conditioner tech 100k easily if you are good).

I grew up in the UK and left. The UK is a miserable place where almost nothing is done properly, everything seems to be run down and short changed. Add being taxed into poverty, it is cold, wet and ridiculously expensive. I found that most places elsewhere are easily better options to the UK. The UK when I visit seems regulated to death, 'Big Brother' cameras everywhere, yet crime is still high. The joke is that so many UK people think they are in the best place in the world and that everywhere else is inferior - nothing could be further from the truth. The only thing the UK has better that I can't get as good elsewhere, is fish-n-chips, gala pie with egg in it and ale.

@@ColonizerChan have lived and worked in the Middle East, Norway, USA, and Thailand. All were better than the UK. The Middle East for sure is warmer and pays about three times the UK and is tax free. The USA tax is minimal, you can do almost anything in the USA because it is not so restricted or as expensive as the UK. There is more land open to the public. You just about double your standard of living in the US over the UK. Norway is expensive and taxed high, but apart from possibly being the most beautiful country in the world, everything is covered by social programs. Thailand is warm and friendly. It is super cheap to live in. The medical, banking, transport and housing are the best anywhere I have lived.

Just to dampen the mood further when I was traveling Vancouver Island I went out for fish and chips and it was one of the best I've had, the waitress joked that it won't be anywhere near as good as a UK fish and chips. I have lived abroad and travelled around and I completely agree with your sentiments, the UK has an awful quality of life over many other places and we pay through the roof for the privelidge. Some parts of the UK are nice but these places are really few and far between and unless you have loads of cash you are priced out.

There is a rule for HGV drivers, everyone knows "never drive into it without knowing how to exit it",. Once only applied to roads now applies to a hole country.

300,000 HGV drivers, 2000 left a week and half only join-in .... no wonder there are problems. They should increase their salary and incentives and train more drivers. Driverless lorries - I don't think so.... there are many unforseen circumstances that only humans can sort out.

@@neodym5809 i can only speak for myself but im in with a good company. Class 2 earning ~65k. Delivering to mcdonalds. Hemel hempstead depot. Had a huge 25% payrise about 10weeks ago. Im at my earnings ceiling for class 2 though. Class 1 can earn up to £35 ph atm in the south east

I remember visiting my father-in-law in France for the first time. He was excited to take us to one of his favourite restaurants -- it was a truck stop. Imagine anyone in the UK taking you to a motorway service station -- partially with the goal, it can be assumed, of impressing you! To clarify, the food was indeed good, not fantastic, but on the level of the sort of pub grub that'd get 4.8/5 on trip advisor in the UK.

They should've gone into one of the ones where the start to the day is waiting for 3-4 hours. I'd often be working in the drivers areas and on many nights I counted 8+ drivers all waiting for hours on end. Half of it is mis-management. Warehouse staff treated like garbage, can't get trailers loaded in time, drivers wait for hours. Load arrives late and gets rejected, trailer comes back full. Driver gets bollocked for failed delivery despite it being out of their control. Following day trailers get loaded late because of a lack of empty trailers, rinse and repeat. The whole thing is broken and was built on the back of exploiting disposable work forces both in the warehouses and with drivers.

Ya that's right. When you're late before you leave, it's your fault. I used to write on the bill of lading arival,start and finish loading time. Usually didn't go over well. Shippers and receivers need to be regulated more than they are. And actually be held accountable. Of course I got black balled and when it came time I quit trucking. That was 28 years ago.... It's been broken for a long time.

A very difficult life on the roads (terrible hours, low pay) with UK employers having exploited EU drivers for years to what is seen as a low-skilled, cheap labour force. And it is not. It requires tremendous skills to drive a lorry. Especially with a trailer. Thatcher scrapped HGV apprenticeships (which were subsidized by the government) in the late 80s. Why is this not raised by Johnson? Yes, that was under the Tories! Brexit is finally bringing to light what has been hiding for so long. The UK's deep structural inequalities, the xenophobia....

Both I would presume... but it is like with all socalled "low qualified" and unfortunately "low paid" jobs... they require a lot more skill than socalled high profile jobs. An Investmentbanker has his office and doesn't need to worry about some football rolling down the street with a kid suddenly appearing behind it and make a split second decision. It is time to honour the so-called low end jobs... but that would take a population that supports a new start. BoJo does want a new start. Maybe not the one he will get I presume. It is time for the British people to demand real Change and policies that actually produce results. Something the Tories seem to be able not to deliver for more or less a decade. In the 2 years i lived in UK, being blocked of working in my profession and forced to be warehouse worker, i noticed one big detail, that has to do with the old british empire: too much population fro the size and food production of the island... UK are not an empire heart anymore. Today its totally unbalanced. But because it was integrated in EU and being the top 5 developed in EU, the market balance to support that size of population was there. Now what? You can import low wage africans and asians as you wish and need for the industry of today, but, that industry will be economically sustainable to produce for what market? EU will not buy... USA will not buy... Russia will not buy... Africa and latin america? Maybe... but you will have to be able to compete against USA + EU + China....

As an Australian I take my hat off to any British driver, whether they've got a car or a semi trailer. Narrow city streets must be a nightmare, and from what I've seen in videos even your freeways seem constantly crowded. Your fuel prices are scary too! One good thing I guess is the short distances. London to Glasgow is just a short drive, whereas I can drive for three days in my home state and not cross a state border.

The M25 is basically a circular car park at some times of day. Also forget the short distances. I used to live 30 miles from work. (48k) almost exactly. Typically in the morning it took 4 1/2 hours which was at least faster and cheaper than the train. Distance and time are not even remotely connected in England. Some routes you can average 50MPH (80kmh) easily others you are lucky to do walking pace for much of it even though you are on a 6 lane motorway.

I don't envy the drivers at all, especially for the pay, and the average age is over 50...thought about training myself (coach driver atm) but the costs too high and the pay miserable (ALL the lorry drivers I've spoken to have warned me off and said they're quitting soon... A modern system of delivery built on the shoulders of over stretched drivers is shaky at best, and doomed at worst...

The general public also don’t respect community facilities, I have noticed that since I moved away from the uk. We can’t have nice things for everyone to enjoy because there seems to be a culture of vandalism there. Public toilets in Australia have been almost spotless every time, parks, stations, shopping centres, outdoor gyms. If you had an outdoor gym in a town in the uk the equipment will be ripped off the ground and destroyed within a week I guarantee it.

I wanted to be a HGV driver many years ago but was advised multiple times not to touch the industry with a barge pole, a couple of times from people who do it or had retired. No idea what the numbers are these days, but 27k starting wage for a '40 hours per week on paper, 60 hours in reality' job in consideration of the working (and resting) conditions and sadly I decided to do other work... Being an Uber driver working the night shifts, being able to choose when and where I work and how often, making no less than £23 an hour across the week was a far better choice. Still have some issues to deal with, but things really have to be changed in multiple ways for people like myself and others to really consider HGV driving.

@@mohammeda4135 - I don't disagree with you. The 25% cut is a bit much and they should really offer something as low as 10% or 15% for Uber Pro drivers on the higher tiers... or something. Uber has its fair share of issues too, and obviously being a nightshift driver, you have to deal with all the crazy madness in the middle of the night from people's intoxication, but hey that's not too bad if you develop coping strategies / look past that.

Now the woman has spend 5 hours waiting for something. In the same time she could have done some deliveries. And this extra time is what produces the shortage in part. It is ineffective work, the sand between the wheels. This is what happens, when you do not accept common standards and procedures. The vendors offered that you can pick up your goods or they ship it to you. But now they don´t ship their goods any longer to the UK and do all the paperwork. So they leave it to the customer to buy the stuff in the EU and the customer has to bring it to the UK at his own costs and has to deal with customs. That is also a part of the driver shortage as more UK drivers need to pick up goods in the EU that were delivered before.

@@johnl9234 I agree with you, normally they would wait seven years upon EU membership but instead there was a flood of cheap labour that the British government did nothing about, even took advantage of, and then on exiting the EU also did absolutely ZIP resulting in the chaos the UK is in now, which is entirely down to Brexit. As evidenced by the lack of problems in Europe and Northern Ireland. to qualify that by lack of problems, I mean a running supply chain, obviously there are definite problems, and a profound lack of services especially in the UK which the government also did nothing about regarding HGV drivers. @@serinadelmar6012 Serina delmar! Only partly to do with Brexit. We used 20000 EU drivers who have all left. We are still 80000 short. Why? It is not through retirements only. Many have decided to quit. We could have been given some incentives in the government letter we all got,such as scrapping the CPC for older drivers, not requiring us to renew our digi card and reduced income tax on over-time. Just a few points that would go along way in addressing the driver shortage. And what does Boris do? Expect the industry to sort it out! Like tomorrow!!!

It is a VERY stressful job, not to mention the personal family time lost, when being on the road for extended periods of time. I can never forget a surprise visit from a friend of mine, who was a long distance(Canada, USA, Mexico)driver. He drove what we call Tractor Trailers in North America. The tractor cab hooks up, to a fifty-three foot long completely enclosed trailer. I accompanied him, on a trip to a warehouse, near my office; I remember looking at the cab's main right hand side exterior mirror, as he backed up this monster, towards the loading dock. We are expected to be professional when being lectured to by VOSA and the police, we are despised by car drivers who want to get to their destination 5 minutes early. @@edgeyt1 Trade is a way to allow economies to focus on their comparative advantage and - in some cases - to provide meaningful additional choice and competition to the market. But the UK has no comparative advantage in cream donut making. At least not that I know off. And mass-produced donuts that are days old at sale are commodities, i.e. very little additional choice can come from having a British supplier. Which leaves competition, but the brexit barriers to trade make the UK less competitive overall. Unless the workers start earning significantly less than any comparably trained employee in the EU ... this is not a real competition. This is the kind of trade that will not survive. As will a lot of the supply chain trade in unfinished products, at least those going to the EU.

Presumably if there was as big and lucrative a market for those donuts within the UK, then the company would simply sell them there in the first place. With the Brexit-increased trade barriers, it is likely that this particular supply chain (and millions of others) will simply shift to an easier flow with longer shelf life.. e.g. The German donut company that sourced from the UK would simply change to a supplier elsewhere in the EU. Or the UK supplier transfers jobs and production into an EU country in order to continue trading there.

As 22 Yr old on HGV I can tell you to prepare for even worse shortages. Avarage age of drivers is around 60 yrs and retire faster than can be replaced. People aged 20-30 stay unemployed, live with parents, or work for £9hr. I worked 4hrs recently and my rate is £170 a shift. That's £42.50/hr. Back home every day, working the same hours as my mechanic mate or even less, never had problems with any stops or services or never slept in a truck. Yet people still chosen unemployment over filling well paid vacancies for Truck drivers. Typical van driver does 10-15hrs or a day with 120-150 drops, truck driver can do as little as 1-4 drops (can get 8-12 but usually they are close by to meet driving times limits, anything more I wouldn't work for thay company) and 8-10hrs for nearly double the money, think people, look for companies that also care about the drivers and HGV work is actually a great and well paid career.

It's because in todays world, most products are made in very large quantities by big expensive machines. This allows those products to be produced very cheap. The downside is, that it requires more transporting of those produced goods to where they are needed. But those costs are often still lower than having higher production costs. (this mainly depends on fuel costs though) In this particular example, those donuts likely cost somewhere like 0,10£ to produce per donut. Let's estimate that a truck carries 10 000 donuts and it costs 1000£ in labour, fuel, truck mainenance, etc... for transport. (2 day trip) So that's another 0,10£ per donut. If those donut's are sold for 0,5£ each => 3000£ profit for that one trip.

The industry bears a lot of the blame for the shortage, most are unwilling to train drivers up they want a qualified driver today but not willing to do it themselves.

@@donmab I'm a LGV driver, yes you need to be qualified, to become qualified you have to pay upwards of £1500 just for class 2 then the same again for class 1 so £3000 total just to pass the test that is not the governments fault (lots of things are but not this) then when you apply for jobs they want 2 years worth of references, how exactly do you get experience if no one will give it you? obviously now you can walk into a lot of places because of the shortage but that is going to mean a lot of inexperienced drivers on the road.

You can't "train drivers up" like you can with other industries. They either have a license, or they don't. You could take inexperienced drivers on, but you're likely to have vastly increased insurance and damage to vehicles and goods, not to mention missed time slots. I used to work in logistics, and drove all over Europe for around 5 years. Another thing is the terrible state of UK truck stops - it's abysmal compared to Europe. If you try to save money (around £50 for parking and food in a UK stop) by parking on the side of the road, you're likely to have the trailer slashed , diesel stolen, and possbily a £100 fine from the police. Why would anyone want to live that life any more? Brexit has of course fucked things up beyond belief for JIT deliveries too.

My uncle a lorry driver from Pakistan came to the UK in the 80s and worked as a lorry driver in the UK back when lorries had more freedom on the roads of UK but over the years he told me the job has become stressful as rules of the road changed and developed.many no go zones for lorries and speed traps increased on roads mainly London which has the most speeds traps such as the A13 dual carriageway where speed limit is 50 then suddenly goes down to 40 and 30.

I think you're assuming that common sense applies to such decisions to make/stop making 'stuff' anywhere. The EU's lack of borders made it easy to transport that stuff around willy nilly. Now it's rather more tricky. Consequences that were ignored by those who should have known far better.

Having to go to the toilet anywhere but an actual toilet as a HGV driver in the UK should be enough to indicate the industry needs changing. It's no wonder Europeans don't want to work here. I'd take less pay for the treatment that is given in other countries. I'm not a HGV either, but if I was to become one it'd be with the sole purpose of getting a working visa for another country in order to move out of the UK. Surprises me that I've never heard of people doing this often. Have you seen New Zealand? Absolute postcard of a place. They have a HGV driver shortage, quite easy to get into that country with such a skill; something I'm very tempted to pursue.

@@goatlps It is due to Brexit. The current rules are the ones that apply to any third country that is not in the EU. The UK is not in the EU. In fact UK has a more favourable position than most 3rd countries as it has a deal with the EU that avoids tariffs. Without that tariffs would be added to all this bureaucracy and customs duties. It amazes me that Brexiteers are surprised by the rules that apply to 3rd countries. They could have looked this up at any time in the last 5 years.

It's so crazy, how things like donuts and milkshakes travel across multiple countries. I'm pretty sure there are people in Germany knowing how to make donuts and people in the UK knowing how to make milkshakes. Transport is simply to cheap, if companies decide to produce this stuff thousands of kilometers away and let lorry drivers chauffeur it around. I'm pretty sure if lorry drivers got unionized and organized together for better pay or even just clean restrooms, prices would raise and many clients would think twice if it's really necessary to transport things over these long distances. The current driver shortage is probably a really good time to demand better working conditions

I used to live and work in England (little town called Kirkby near Liverpool) back in 2007 and while on a night shift in late 2007 I read an article in a magazine. It was about how Europe (then including England) would be short well over 100.000 lorry drivers by 2015 and that the pay for this job would go through the roof. For a short while I thought of becoming a lorry driver lol. I never forgot about that article and how true it's been. I assume the shortage is way worse now. Hats off to this beautiful strong lady 🎩

Germany and other countries obviously do make their own doughnuts, but UK ones have been competitive. Unfortunately, we can see that the competitive edge has been blunted by Brexit. Nonetheless, against the odds a UK company still manages to sell to the EU, but many others will have given up.

It is less about competition but more about giving customer different choices. So the manufacturer in one country also delivers to the retailer in another country because they have focused on other products that have higher demand in their area. Its not that they can not do it, or can not do it at the same price, but the other product is not their focus. Germany produces enough beer and exports a lot, but still other countries sell beer to Germany, just because the consumer likes the choice of different brands, not because it is cheaper or better.

I wonder what we do actually value in the UK because we have roads that are either like dirt tracks or are so congested that it takes hours to get anywhere. I hate driving now even just on short journeys in my local area so I can't imagine how tough it is to drive large vehicles for long hours on those roads with little in the way of facilities when you do get a break.

You're not wrong. The world is quite insane. Green beans from Africa too, flown in by jet and avocados from South America. You couldn't make it up. I've started growing my own fruit & veg. It's the only sensible answer. My tomatoes in the garden are still ripening thanks to climate change ! Really, they are in mid-October.

@@TheWitchInTheWoods Who actually NEEDS those damned pumpkins anyway ? Leave them to rot I say. A friend of mine just showed me some blueberries from Peru btw ! They're large. Back in my youth much produce we ate was locally produced and consumer products were usually made in Britain rather than China. I wonder how much global climate change is due to transporting food and other stuff absurdly long distances ?

Coming from Sweden to the UK I can say the difference is worlds apart. And I don't even live in a heavily populated area like London. Not just is there way more traffic, which is unavoidable, but the road planning itself is under-dimensioned and plagued by old ideas and influences. Instead of making intersections based on high flow where cars follow lanes, slip lanes and bypasses so that they never need to stop the UK main roads are filled with TRAFFIC LIGHTS. In the middle of a busy dual carriage way: Traffic lights. In a roundabout? Traffic lights. Not to mention the small streets riddled with cars parked absolutely everywhere. It is hard enough to get pass in a car, let alone an HGV.

Iv been driving trucks twenty years and have enjoyed the job and done well for myself. My only complaint is or was the amount of agency work. Multi nationals and big corporations have relied on using drivers on zero hour contracts for years. Tesco, Sainsbury's, DHL etc. Now they can't and have to offer fulltime paye contracts. So it's a win win for the worker for now.

@@oleole27 first of all I'm Irish not English. Second of all he's not my PM because I don't believe in this farce that people call democracy. Finally wtf are you on about. Yes less drivers means there is more demand for local drivers and wages are going up in the industry. There is a shortage in the US too and they have the same thing, less drivers = better pay for drivers. Have you got a problem with people getting paid descent wages? Have you got a problem with people being paid more than 12 euros an hour, whilst having to sleep in a cab 5 to 6 nights a week away from your family. Again wtf is your point? Guess what yes protectionism works. I've seen it on this case and I've seen it as a seafarer. In Iceland they protected their industry and fishermen make great money, 3 to 4 times what we could make in mainland Europe Ireland or UK, why because to work for an Icelandic fishing company you have to live in the country and be part of the community, otherwise you won't get a job, which means there is no one coming to work for low paying jobs and people living locally get proper descent wages. It's pretty simple to understand.
