Necessity may be the mother of invention for Chadwick Johnson, but opening Photoshop is still just a pain in the ass. In this APTV exclusive, the Hundredth frontman explains his approach to being the self-taught designer behind the band’s aesthetic-creating everything from t-shirts and hats to the band’s iconic crossed keys logo and the cover to their latest record “Rare.”

As someone who is a graphic design student I do understand much of what this guy is saying hut at the same time disagree with a lot too. I honestly can’t stand how anyone can just open Photoshop, or one of those sites like Customink and just make shirts. You have no idea how hard it is to design something. I’ve spent hours moving the word “the” around on an artboard. And I get not everyone can afford to hire designers, but believe me there are plenty of college students who would be happy to have the work to build their portfolios and clientele. It’s not all about making shit that looks cool. Yes that’s a large component but on day 1 they tell you “The job of a designer is not to make things look good. You get judged based on how well you can design something that solves a problem.” I love most of their merch and their album cover is really awesome. But then they have stuff like their “Trip Tee” and I look at the typography and want to punch the person who designed it bc it looks so random and without purpose. I respect that these guys are doing shit without any training and honestly most of their stuff has been really good. But there’s a reason why people go to school for this shit. It’s not easy (which no one said it was) and it’s not about making stuff look cool.

i aggree with a lot of points you made but i also think you should keep a bit of naivety when designing something. If you do something for yourself why not go into the job totally open-minded, that's how you get something different from what everyone else does.

cocopunk1486: I'm a design professional as well. I'd suggest you think about the market in which Chadwick is designing and his approach starts to make more sense. Band merch is all about looking cool, to get people to buy it. It's fashion over function, so designing something heavily conceptual is good for advertising, but maybe not as much when it's on a shirt or poster. I also think there's something to be said about Chadwick not overworking a design, and really just letting it be whatever he thinks is beautiful. You'll come to find the formal education in art schools is a very rigorous one to make you the most marketable and conceptual artist you can be, but the business world is far more watered-down. I'm very impressed by Chadwick's ability to create so much great work without a design background and under such time constraints.

Rui Carneiro: I agree, I think their merch feels more fashion-driven than band merch. I wish more bands took this approach to their merch design. It seems every band T is a black T-shirt.
