Once, an uber driver tried to tell me a joke (that I did not recognize as a joke) that started “what is hard water” and in response I just start explaining my personal understanding of Hard Water (as opposed to Soft Water). When I finished he looked kind of embarrassed and said “ice”.

I probably would have done the same thing, explaining the literal meaning of hard water. 😂

Did you laugh? I ask because I am not autistic but I would answer the same way you did but when presented with the punch line, I definitely would laugh.

Every one would but the intent of the joke is whether when presented with his answer, you do I mind flip, realize his answer is slso valid and laugh

Can’t really have fun around literal thinkers it isn’t enjoyable you have to constantly watch what you say and explain a simple meaning it’s draining

For me, being a literal thinker and a visual thinker means interpreting something literally and immediately imagining that literal interpretation, which can result in some pretty funny images and this totally happens even when i already now what is meant. Also i like to jokingly allaborate on literal interpretations a lot, which some people like to go along with, but some will just think i didn't understand them. Despite me having a hard time to understand sarcasm, others will have a hard time understanding my sarcasm, which is really interesting and i've seen it happen with other literal thinkers as well.

Yes, I add a serious sounding joke on top of their joke and they think that I didn't get the joke. My sarcasm seems to be different. I have had people tell me that I have no sense of humor and other people have told me that I should be a stand up comedian.

Once I was telling my roommate, something exciting and he exclaimed, “let’s go!” After a few seconds of confused smiling at the enthusiasm, I asked him, “ok, but where are we going?”

One time I was sitting down with some friends senior year of high school talking about what colleges we might go to. I asked, “so why are you choosing that college?” She said, “oh because it has a nice atmosphere”. Then I asked, “oh yea I guess being away from the city, there’s less air pollution”

When i was young and I lived in Pennsylvania, I remember my parents saying we will be taking the Philadelphia Turnpike And in my mind, I interpreted it as a corrugated pipe that we drive through and I was very excited to see what type of structure this is and was disappointed when it was just a highway.

to me (auDHD) the literal thinking is intimately tied to visually picturing what is said. It's almost like im seeing a visual representation for every word / couple of words. and that usually ends up being very 'face value' or literal. if I try to turn that function off, I almost can't think at all. I think this example sums it up pretty well: when my friends and I would sing along to songs in high school, the accompanying actions that I would make were the literal meanings of each word in the song, they weren't interpretations

Yeah once a friend was talking about something unfortunate that happened to her and she was like "isn't is funny how life is?" Like a rhetorical question but i was like "no!" which made my friend laugh so hard and i was just sitting there confused :( Anyway thanks for this video especially the funny ending 😂

I'm definitely a literal thinker! I relate a lot to your examples and have had similar situations. 😂 I finally learned that a lot of times i have to ask someone to rephrase the question or to reword it in a different way (I remember telling a friend before that I'm a literal thinker and thats why I ask her to rephrase things a lot.. and that was before I realized that I'm on the autism spectrum). The ending of your video was hilarious with the examples! 😂

its so funny to look back on things in retrospect. just before my first job interview I was googling tips and read that making good eye contact and taking notes shows that youre confident and eager to learn or whatever. so during my interview I maintained continuous eye contact the whole time while simultaneously taking notes (without looking down whatsoever) all throughout and ended up looking super weird with a bunch of extremely crooked to illegible notes 😂

Why wouldn't someone ask, "what are some of your favorite movies instead of favorite movie?" What if we did that kind reasoning with, "Are you single?" My ADHD, OCD, dyslexia, truth telling and sense of justice says these are crazy expectations. I don’t think your thinking was out of line at all ❤ I love sarcasm and jokes but I guess I believe people wayy to much!

14:08. That's a great example. I still don't fully understand but it hrlos. I mean a definitely am not autistic and definitely don't take everything literally. You present to me, like another aDHDer, like me. This is true despite gaos in, age, sex, country and race. I can't detect your autism but i can detect your ADHD because i am ignorant about autism unless its extreme. What's confusing is, even non-autistic people can take individual sayings or expressions wrong. I don't understand the why. What I do know is, I have gotten into several arguments with people who were autistic ans who probably actually with me but disagreed with my WORDING. They saw distinctions i didn't as much as they might miss abstract links i was trying to imply. The gap in perception was the source of miscommunication and conflict. It would be invalid for me to claim they were the only ones missing something.

Since discovering I'm autistic, I'm more aware that sarcasm exists and can better decide whether or not someone is being sarcastic.

Detecting and delivering Sarcasm can even be a challenge for non-autistic people. NTs often take me literally when i am sarcastic. I used to hate my dads sarcasm. I sometimes miss sarcasm but i do catch it most of the time. I have adhd. I am not autistic. I am an abstract thinker.

10:42 I would have thought that too. That is too serious of a topic for her to imply selfishness. No wonder I have so much shame and feel bad. There is a scripture that says, "view others as superior to you." Not think about others interests too or others can have different superior qualities then the reader.
