So glad you made it. My husband came from Mexico in 1989 in a similar way ( even though his story changes, lol) I know it wasn't easy. Now we have two beautiful daughters and the youngest has a way with dogs.

That "sense of happiness, gratitude, love and creativity" you speak of I can relate to, although I never tried to put it into words. It's so nice to hear. My daughter struggled for her life for weeks leading into Christmas. Despite her struggle, I felt that same way. She made it, and is now 6 years old. She loves dogs, and begged for another one this Christmas. We have a German Shepherd already and they are the best of friends. The miracle of Christmas absolutely exists, and your story validates it even further. Thank you for sharing.

What a beautiful story, the people that crossed your path were Ángels sent to help you out at the most difficult times that you were experiencing away from your love ones, not only being alone, trusting strangers, with an empty stomach, no money and the fears to be found and deported at any time. Mr. Milan, I have nothing but the utmost respect for you. Many times I have encountered people coming across the border as I lived very close to it on the US side, not too far from where you ended up. I know firsthand the struggles many have encountered. You have taken your opportunity and turned it into a beautiful thing for all of us to learn by. I only hope you will continue the good work you have done.

I had that same voice tell me to help horses. I did this for 36 years. I just retired last year. I truly believe that God imparts to us each a gift. For my sister, it is singing, for my brother it’s being an electrician, for me it was horse training. I unfortunately had to fight with my family ( especially every time I had a horse hospitalize me) to live my dream. I hurt like crazy now, but I can’t regret a single day, year, or injury. I spent my years fulfilling the gift that God gave me. Thank you for recognizing your gift and sharing this with us! Love you Sir!

Thank you Cesar. I know your story is true because it made me cry. I cried to remember my own journey just months after yours, to California. Mine was entirely on this side of the border, but my guiding star was the same. I car camped with my two small children and their father from Chicago to Pacifica CA. All along we were what is now called homeless, but as with you, it never felt like that. We were just camping. Upon arriving in Pacifica, we made a camp on the beach and even though my husband was black, our presence there was never questioned as it would be now. I left my family there on the beach while I went into San Francisco, found a job at a travel agency where the owner saw my desperation and gave me enough of an advance on my salary to get an apartment in Oakland. My husband left then, he had fulfilled his mission, and eventually my children and I worked our way across two bridges to Marin County, one of the richest spots on earth, but of course with room for "servants" in low income housing. I got my real estate license. My daughter is now a massage therapist and my son a professor of African Studies. It would seem that both of our journeys were perfectly timed and that the wondrous flow of life washed us up in all the right places. That tall, skinny guy and the short, balding travel agency owner were our saviors then. God's will is done by men and women every day, unnoticed, unrewarded and the only action worthy of our status as humans. All we can do is remember and like you, learn to trust.

It's interesting to me how a being venerable allowed you to understand the mindset of a dog better. Merry Christmas back at you big guy.

Cesar I think this angel man who took you across the border gave you the gift of seeing and recognising how we ‘broadcast’ our emotions - but put you in the position of what most animals are in that need your help. This man knew you were fearful, long before you did, he was your pack leader and knew the water would calm you and knew his actions would influence you. You didn’t perceive that, and to this day this water is a question for you, but looking at all your work, that man is you now. He showed you how to handle fear and knew what would be needed to get you across that border, gifting you the perception of total reliance and trust that an animal needs with its owner. You are using all the skills you use now. What a beautiful and important story.
