I literally dropped everything I was doing to watch this, worth it

I love this animation so much! Budding artists and animators, I recommend paying close attention to these moments. I've made some notes here. 0:00 - song begins 0:02 - One of the most charming intros to an animatic I've seen in a while. Notice that Yashiro's little head-bobbing movement is actually just one image, with a distortion effect applied on. The moving musical notes add a little more to the 'bounce' of the song. 0:08 - Using Hanako’s ability to float is a fantastic staging device here, as it unique to this ship alone. The number of musical notes increase as Yashiro sings. The additional text on the screen, such as “how the heck did you get here” and *giggles* are even more comical in this animatic because it’s not in the lyrics; pretty similar to the manga way of adding in bits of text to the main action in a panel. 0:20 - A nice sequence of actions right here. When Hanako takes her book, notice the speed lines to create a sense of movement and speed. The transitions between each shot involve a quick little movement that adds so much life to an otherwise static scene. 0:27 - Hanako’s “punching, kicking, and putting me down …” Using bubble clouds was a very efficient way of reducing the effort needed to animate this. Imagine having to draw out a whole scene for each of these! Using simplified images also adds to the comical nature of Yashiro’s ‘punchy’ behaviour. Hanako’s slightly sad expression at the last one adds to the personality of these characters in the video. 0:34 - Their movements go together, in sync, and with the rhythm of the song. Yashiro snapping her book shut with slight exasperation and Hanako pulling on his hat with a smile is the perfect summary of their interactions in this scene. Notice the transition to the next scene involves both sliding the artwork downwards, as well as a background colour change sliding upwards. 0:52 - Again, the artwork is simplified to match the especially lighthearted tone of the chorus, saving a lot of time for the animator. 1:28 - some movements are paid very close attention to, such as the flick of Yashiro’s hand. Also notice that there isn’t any background art, but the whole animation still feels natural due the full use of the screen, as well as the use of negative space. Never neglect your composition. 1:47 - Yashiro’s hair movement here is also incredibly well done. There’s one frame for her hair as it’s being blown by the wind. This image is moved across the screen, giving the illusion of movement. Her hair succumbing to gravity is done with simplicity, but tricks the eye into thinking that her hair has dropped so fast we missed the movement. 2:00 - The fill of a desaturated pink here gives the illusion of the background being well lit, while Yashiro’s presence is blocking some of the light. Works well for making us seem like they’re in a real environment, as well as drawing attention to her introspective comment. Her hair movement is created by changing the opacity between the frames to come. 2:09 - Those bubbles on the background add to Yashiro’s dreamy fantasy. However, when Hanako interrupts her, the camera zooms back a little, the bubbles vanish, and her expression changes. Conveys the idea clearly to the viewer in an unobtrusive way. 2:30 - what a cute moment. There’s really nothing else to say here. 2:56 - In addition to the main dialogue spoken by them (the lyrics of the song) the little text on the side adds so much personality to the characters. The little movements for the giggles add a lot of life to otherwise dead (cough cough) characters. 3:02 - It’s not like I like You!! Okay? 3:05 - There is no movement between the frames, but it still gives the illusion of movement. Note the use of anticipation before Hanako actually points at the blackboard. The ship is a simple sketch, but is enough to convey the idea. Simplicity is often funny, as memes have shown us many times before. The use of dark maroon colours surrounding the candlelit table give the feeling of darkness without using black, which might’ve been a bit too strong of a colour in this case. 3:59 - some less action-filled scenes to give the viewer some space to breathe. 4:12 - Lol. I’ve already said everything I wanted to say, these techniques are used in more than one scene tho. OTHER STUFF Lip movements are actually done according to the lyrics. The animation cuts corners in many places, without us noticing. It’s great to learn and use these in your animation so you don’t keep working for a ridiculous amount of time. Easily one of the most well done aspects of This animation (in my opinion). If you would like to observe how the animation has reduced the amount of animation required, simply rewatch the video while muting the music. Often, the music can give an illusion of movement itself. Only three or four colours are used, and NONE OF THEM ARE BLACK. Following the original style of AidaIro, they are dark pink, maroon, and brown colours. Does wonders for the softness of an animation. Many of these images are lifted from the original manga. USE A REFERENCE GUYS, it will save you a lot of time. That’s how this animation is so spot on with the art style. You can train yourself in a style, but it’s just about efficiency when you have to draw fifty frames for an animation. Thanks a lot, this video was really fun to analyse!
