I like PY150 and similar PY129 with Prussian blue PB27 and with Indigo. Interesting greens. Thank you for very wide comparison.

PY150 + W&N Payne's Grey for a cheeky quick 'holly green'. Daniel Smiths PY150 disperses so wildly, you can make a grass green shade with it, paint a horizontal line of it, then paint water above it and watch the grass grow before your eyes. Try it :)

Thank you for sharing this tip! Winsor and Newton Payne's gray and New Gamboge are two main colors that I keep on all of my palettes. The latter is comprised predominantly of PY150 and is my favorite yellow/quin gold cousin for mixing greens. However, it NEVER dawned on me to mix New Gamboge with Payne's Gray. Mind blown and thank you for sharing! 🎨

For a long time my favorite pigment for mixing greens was Azo Yellow Green Py129. I find both pigments very similar in their properties, and both make great greens and interesting red-oranges.

I agree PY150 (or PY129) are very useful colors for mixing (not only) greens. But I find myself lately using bismuth yellow very often, when mixing greens. And I really love it. I know it is not as transparent as PY150. But I find the versions from Qor and DS not too opaque. 😊

I'm in the PY129 camp too 😄 I considered getting PY150 based on the recommendation of Kimberly Krick (because of the huge value and temperature range), but I don't need more yellow - it's my least used color. And then I discovered PY129 acts like a proper yellow in portrait tones as well 🤯 and that sealed it for me. I like to allow colors to mix on paper in my travel sketches, so a pure yellow wouldn't work for that. PY129 on its own is the color of foliage and grass hit by sunlight. It's also great for shallow water.
@jennw6809
@jennw6809 2 месяца назад
I enjoy PY129 too, but PY150 has a special property of pushing away other pigments. Spattered wet on wet on darker colors, it is magical -- it is like sprinkling fairy lights on your painting. Except DaVinci's for some reason, which doesn't seem to spread like this, but I've experienced this in all other brands.
@NelaDunato

@@NelaDunato It's very fun. It just occurred to me that if you have some oxgall or synthetic oxgall, you could add it to just about any color (for instance PY129) and get the same effect?? I'll have to experiment.
@jennw6809
@jennw6809 2 месяца назад
A secret property of PY150 is it pushing other pigments out of the way in wet-on-wet, as if it contained a lot of oxgall. Spattering it over darker wet pigments is like lighting it with fairy lights. PY129 doesn't have this property! One caveat, for some reason DaVinci's brand doesn't seem to do this, but all others I've used do!
@tiscance

PY150 was also my favourite pigment for greens, until I tried PY129 and now it’s my favourite one. For me PY129 makes more realistic greens and PY150 more vibrant greens. I have both of them in my palette, I use mostly PY150 for sunsets and light parts of architecture

My favorite green mix is actually Green Gold, PY129, and a Phthalo Green Yellow Shade, PG36. This is the mix that Van Gogh uses for their Sap Green which I keep on my palette. However I also keep Winsor and Newton's New Gamboge as the primary yellow on my palettes. New Gamboge contains PR150 and PR209 and reminds me of a softer version of Quin Gold, but it's still tints out to a mid-tone and very light yellow making it very versatile. I also enjoy using this color with phthalo greens. The red slightly knocks back the green creating a very natural sap green color, and the glowing quality of PY150 makes greens look alive. If I didn't have space for PY129, I would definitely keep PY150 over the former on my palette since I can easily mix what looks like a PY129 by adding a very little amount of green to PY150 but you can't mix PY150 from PY129. Nevertheless, both of these Azo colors are phenomenal for mixing greens!

Nice video. PY150 is the only yellow I need. I once mixed a bunch of greens with PY150 and also PY151 for comparison, which is super clean and transparent without the earthiness. In mid-dilution mixes they all looked exactly the same.. So I don't see any need for a "cleaner" yellow in the palette. Lately I have been into mixing phthalo greens with oranges for deep olives. They definitely stand up to those phthalos -- try it out!

PY150 is my favorite yellow of all time. I have many tubes of each brand. I use it for painting light. Mix a little PO48/PO49 and you get the literal color of light. And yes, I did stock up on Quin Gold in various brands when it was announced that PO48 was being discontinued, lol. I will be able to mix my own quin gold with my favorite pigments until I die....and then some. And my favorite color is green. Kelly green is my favorite shade of green, I have so many clothes that color, lol, but for paint Roman Szmal's Autumn Green is my favorite green paint of all time. Ever. Point blank. Period. I think you definitely need to visit greens. Not being a green person is simply not acceptable🤣🤣

Kind of unrelated to the video, but since it's in the topic of greens, do you happen to have W&N's Cobalt Green? They have an uncommon hue for PG50, a "minty" cobalt green that I haven't seen in any other brands. Holbein and Shinhan have similar hues for their Cobalt Greens but those are mixtures. Have you tried the hue before?
@PaintinHiding
@PaintinHiding 2 месяца назад
i have tried w&n's cobalt green PG50 from their dot card. it doesn't look minty to me. looks just like other middle green cobalt greens made with PG50 (like roman szmal's cobalt green light and lukas's cobalt green). as for holbein and shinhan cobalt green hues, i agree that those are more 'minty' in hue and i can only assume they might have been trying to replicate something between cobalt green and cobalt turquoises. who knows~

@aleahlrb 2 месяца назад
@@PaintinHiding Oooh that's really interesting! I remember getting entranced by the hue when I first saw it featured in Kim Crick's W&N video. I managed to find a tiny 5mL tube of the colour in an art store ~2hrs away from me. It has an old packaging tho (likely 2014-2016), so I wonder if they changed the pigment they use since. If this is the case, I'm going to regret not getting the 14ml tube coz it's becoming my new favourite green. 😥😥 It's almost similar to PG18 when diluted, but in masstone, it stays very pastel.
