If you’ve spent any amount of time lifting weights, taken a break for a bit, and then started back up again, you probably noticed that you seemed to regain strength and size much quicker than the first time around.
Well, this isn’t your mind playing tricks on you-the acceleration in progress is a scientifically verified phenomenon often referred to as “muscle memory,” but what is actually going on?
Neurological mechanisms can explain the rapid regain of strength, but not muscle size. Do muscle fibers have some sort of “memory” of their previous, more conditioned states? Or is something else responsible for these effects?
Let’s find out.

So you’re saying u can gain muscle after 20 years of non weight lifting?

Went almost a year and now gained back almost in 1 month its pretty Amazing Thankfully.

That really gives me hope. I've recently had surgery and will be allowed to lift at 6 months, but no shoulder work for a year. It began to give me post-op depression because I would always get compliments on my muscles and body but after two weeks of not working out, I already feel smaller. But to hear that you went almost a year (much like my situation) and you gained all your muscle back in about a month gives me hope. Thank you.

Really? That’s dope bro. I’m about to get back into it myself. Haven’t worked out in almost a year. Hopefully I can gain it back just as fast.

I got incredibly sick from a staph infection last october. I was bed ridden for 3 weeks, not eating and not really moving. When I got out of the hospital I had dropped from 175 to 140. I thought it was going to take me at least 6 months to get back to my pre sickness days. I didn't even take me 2 months. I was amazed at how fast it came back.

Thank you for the video. I've always been fairly skinny and decided to start weight lifting 3 years ago. Lifted for 1 year, gained 40 pounds (20 of which was fat, ate way too much). Then I got an injury on my shoulder that caused me to quit. Now, 2 years later I started lifting again, irregularly and without proper diet, but at least 130 grams of protein per day. I gained 6 pounds of muscle within the first 4 weeks and got noticeably bigger. My girlfriend loves it. I'm lazy and quit working out after 4 months but it's nice to know that whenever I do I can gain muscle back fairly quickly, even after so much time has passed. Muscle memory is definitely real.

DutchLiam84 a natural lifter will never be able to gain more than 1.5 - 2 lbs of muscle per month.
@christru22
@christru22 6 лет назад
CBXR750 it probably wouldnt take 4 weeks, but If you gained 4 pounds in 4 months, it would probably only take 2 months, maybe less to get back to that. It took me a month in a half to get back what took me 4 months

Your whole body has fitness memory. It goes with muscle as well as cardio health as well. Regaining my wind by running happens much quicker than the first time I ever built it up. But any memory only occurs up into the point of your last highest state of fitness. Then it’s like new territory again. Many will falsely perceive this as a “plateau” when in fact, they’re progress has slowed because your body is in uncharted territory, so your progress at that point will be at the same rate as the first time you ever worked out in your life.

Very refreshing to watch. I’ve put so much time, work and dedication the last 3 years. I 6 weeks ago I had a ac separation injury while biking but I’m still keeping on my diet, keeping fit and active but I can’t lift much weights with upper body so I’ve lost a lot of size and its definitely been messing with my head. But keeping positive and keep thinking one day eventually can train back to it again and watching this videos is reassurance. Thank you.

I'm a 57 year old woman, only been back in the gym for 1 year, 6 months, after not working out for over 15 years, lost all my muscle mass when I lost 62 lbs., intermediate fasting. I had no hope...Well, I'm ecstatic! My muscles have returned and my biceps are even larger. Muscle memory is REAL.

I was a bikini athlete and quite muscular. I went through a bad 4years where I could hardly train due to sickness. I even went on medication which made me catabolic. Incredibly in just a few months I’ve bounced back to ALMOST exactly what I used to be. Nutrition is important though.

I was aware that the "memory" was there from training hard then taking time off, training hard again. This was the explanation I was looking for. Thanks for spending the time to research it.

As someone who has taken Testosterone Enanthate I can say 100% I have noticed that since stopping usage of the drugs which would probably be a good two to three or more years now, recently getting back into the gym after about 3 years off, only in the last few weeks of working out again that i have gained a notable amount of size and that my body is responding to the workouts phenomenally.

Its interesting to note that even patients who have suffered severe brain damage from strokes which results in restricted capability to remember, recall or recoup prior brain abilities can recover significantly, if not completely, by training the brain to bypass the broken pathways and build new neural pathways that eventually establish new brain pathways that allow reconnection to areas of brain that were previously inaccessible due to damaged connectors, or pathways. It takes months of hard work and specialized trainers knowledgeable in neuroscience to achieve this rebuilding process, but the outcome can result in a patients partial, or full recovery of pre stroke mental abilities.

Interesting fact: I stop training for one year and I would never get my biceps to grow and they would be platued for two years at 12.5". Started off at like 10". Anyways after that year of not training I was back to 11". Then I hit the gym and in 6 months I was making better gains then before . Arms blew up to 14" flexed. It might have to do with mToR being reset when I wasn't training. Would like to find out more about It

Have you worked with middle-aged men who haven't done regular resistance training in at least a decade? Do they regain muscle faster even after 10 yrs than a similarly aged person who has never lifted? And how noticeable was the difference? Trying to motivate my dad.

Yes it does don't listen to these fools. As long as you've got at least 20% body fat on you, running a caloric deficit and lifting will give you those gains back. Watch any body recomposition video.

Hey Mike I read a article of Brad schonfeld about on much total weekly sets is good nd in article he says 10 to 12 sets So mu question is 10 to 12 sets is good for every body type Means Ectomorph body type Or volume is little bit high If intensity is high Or what's totally sets in a week u prefer for ectomorph body type
@MikeMatthewsFitness
@MikeMatthewsFitness 3 года назад
10-20 sets per week per muscle group is generally good depending on workout experience. Check these out: legionathletics.com/how-many-sets-build-muscle/ legionathletics.com/body-types/

I lifted pretty intensely in high school while in a constant caloric surplus. I quit lifting for a year post-high school, then went back to the gym, lost a ton of body fat and built all my previous muscle back within about a year while in a mild caloric deficit. Muscle memory is totally a thing.
