Muscle Memory Explained (Animation)

When muscle fibers expand, cells in the tissue known as stem cells multiply rapidly and combine with the fibers that are already present to generate a greater volume in the cell. Strength training and other forms of physical fitness result in the addition of new nuclei to muscle cells. Even after extended breaks in training, these additional nuclei remain. Muscle memory is produced as a result of these nuclear additions. As you start to train more, sufficient nuclei will be transferred to your cells. When you resume your training, your muscle cells will remember this process, and you will regain your previous size. #animation #Shorts #muscle #workout #exercise

I wanna add that I was in the “best shape of my life” at 32. I was jogging five miles/day Taking adderall. Eating probably a 1200 cal deficiency. I went from 300 to 215lbs. In around 8 months. Then I got depressed as we do and gained it back. I never thought I’d reach that again. Now I’m 36. I’m eating 200 plus grams of protein and shooting for around 2000 cal and 10k steps a day. @JJTIP_TOE

What people commonly refer to as muscle memory isn't located in the muscle at all it's in the brain. When you do any action for example like play a specific guitar chord progression. You send neurons down a neurological pathway in your brain, the more you play that chord progression the more a substance called mylin develops on that neurological pathway. That results in a stronger and faster connection required to play that progression faster and effortlessly. I learned this from a book called the talent code, a great read investigating why people become great at various things and how they do it.

They're talking about a different type of "muscle memory" in this video i believe he's talking about how your body will regain lost muscle fast if you already had that muscle before but just lost it, like being on a long break from training, and then suddenly regaining all your strength fast in just few months of training. But with the "muscle memory" you're talking about, i completely agree.
@Zeratsu
@Zeratsu 2 года назад
@@ducket1748 yea I think in this video the author calls this process incorrectly. I think "reserved muscle" is more suitable because if you quit training the muscles can't just get vaporized, they're still existing in a form of a "raisin" without sufficient nutritions and other "juice". And if you start training again you stimulate them, you wake them, and you start eating better, your appetite is growing and your muscles will now look like a fresh "grapes", full of "juice". Sorry if I explained in an odd way.

Well I just started lifting again after four years and at first I was shocked at how weak I was, but only 1 month in and it's like noobie gains x100. Your strength will come back faster than you would think possible. I've gone from 127lbs to 145lbs in a month and still see large gains in strength day to day as well as being able to already see a huge difference in my physique. Crazy how amazing the human body is.

I broke my arm about 6 months ago. Lost a ton of strength and muscle in the process. It honestly was depressing thinking about all my hard work over two years seemingly going to waste. I learned about muscle memory and found it hard to believe but as I healed and started lifting again I am already stronger than I was when I broke my arm. The muscle atrophy in my arm was almost disturbing but your body really does amazing things and with time and dedication you can get back to where you were in no time.

If you are reading this muscle memory effect is legit. I trained regularly for 4 years since I was 15. After that a lot happened and I didn't hit the gym anymore. Now I am 2 weeks in and increasing my weight in all compound exercises in a heavy manner. I started low to let the passive structures adapt to the weight, but the muscles can definitely take a lot more weight. I hit the gym with a friend of mine and did a 1rm test, after two weeks of training I could lift my bodyweight easily in all of the compound exercises except military press ofc.

Facts, I wanted to see what is what like to be fat so I quit working out for 2 years and sat for 8-16 hours a day. I gained 45lbs (160 lbs-205 lbs) and thought that was fat enough and started running and lifting again. My first run I jogged 3 miles and got some nasty shin splints but kept going. My first day back in the gym I was lifting a little over half of what I used to be able to. It took about a month but I lost 35lbs weighing 170lbs and I'm back to lifting my usual reps and weight. One thing I noticed is my metabolism is a little slower than what it used to be and my cognitive function seems to be slower as well. But that could be correlated to aging two years.

"Muscle memory is a form of procedural memory that involves consolidating a specific motor task into memory through repetition, which has been used synonymously with motor learning. When a movement is repeated over time, the brain creates a long-term muscle memory for that task, eventually allowing it to be performed with little to no conscious effort."

I've had a herniated disc the last year been working out on and off through it. I'll be getting a microdiscectomy next month and it's nice to see how I'll be able to bounce back after so many interruptions

Yes this is absolutely true, even if I take a break for a couple of months all it takes is a couple of weeks of hard work to get back to top form. But I have been an athlete for most of my life.

Fun fact: this is speculation and we actually don’t know much about what causes muscle memory we just know it happen

This is cool but recent research afai remember also says this could be due to epigenetic reasons instead of the / just the nuclei theory.

No such thing as muscle memory. It’s the neurons of your nervous system that control muscles and cells. So it’s “nervous system memory”

It blows my mind because I literally have fast muscle memory. I did a few years in the pen, use to work out heavy then stopped when i got out. I just recently started back and realized it doesn’t matter what type of workouts I do, I instantly can see a difference & no I’m not talking about the PUMP you get from working out i actually see long lasting results off the rip. It’s a great thing, but it kinda makes me stagnant because I know I can always work out for a few weeks and still look fit as hell

I like to use the analogy of a path through a grassy field. First time you cross it there is no path yet, but if you go the same way through the field again and again ...

As a biologist I find it really important to say working out does not give your cells multiple nuclei …
@Hans-lp3qh
@Hans-lp3qh 2 года назад
So what is the thing that give your cells multiple nuclei? The mind-muscle connection and repetitive actions/patterns?
@Gvozd111
@Gvozd111 2 года назад
Exactly. I’m not a biologist at all. This is just common knowledge. Nuclei carry genetic information. Nothing more. It’s ridiculous to assume cells grow additional nuclei when we exercise

yeah, I wasn't a huge person or gym junkie, but I am approx 1 to 2 weeks, I looked really fit again... stopped for a few months with a back muscle issue and was blown away! I blew away and people said, where were you.. I told them, I was blown away
