Calvin: “The Visible Church as Mother of Believers
But because it is now our intention to discuss the visible church, let us learn even from the simple title “mother” how useful, indeed how necessary, it is that we should know her. For there is no other way to enter into life unless this mother conceive us in her womb, give us birth, nourish us at her breast, and lastly, unless she keep us under her care and guidance until, putting off mortal flesh, we become like the angels [Matthew 22:30]. Our weakness does not allow us to be dismissed from her school until we have been pupils all our lives. Furthermore, away from her bosom one cannot hope for any forgiveness of sins or any salvation…”
Luther: “Therefore he who would find Christ must first find the Church. How should we know where Christ and his faith were, if we did not know where his believers are? And he who would know anything of Christ must not trust himself nor build a bridge to heaven by his own reason; but he must go to the Church, attend and ask her. Now the Church is not wood and stone, but the company of believing people; one must hold to them, and see how they believe, live and teach; they surely have Christ in their midst. For outside of the Christian church there is no truth, no Christ, no salvation”

By the way, I totally slaughtered the quote about the car and garage at 3:10 In my defense, this was YEARS ago. But it is actually attributed to Billy Sunday: Going to church doesn’t make you a Christian any more than going to a garage makes you an automobile

For it is written, Rejoice, thou barren that bearest not; break forth and cry, thou that travailest not: for the desolate hath many more children than she which hath an husband. For more on this topic, No King But Caesar & The Return Of The Melchisedec is available online at Advantage Books. Peace to all.

The Reformed do believe that baptism and the Lord's Supper do something. It is in the Westminster Confession of Faith, which is still confessed by Presbyterians. Some have forgotten it, but many haven't. Unfortunately, the 3 Forms of Unity are a little less clear about the direct and link between the sign and the thing signified, so the Dutch Reformed have forgotten more than the Presbyterians.

Why do you keep appealing to Calvin, and Luther as an authority?
@FrSteveMacias
@FrSteveMacias 7 месяцев назад
Several reasons. 1. They are great scholars in the vein of Western/Augustinian theology. 2. Their writing here is persuasive and hinges upon a Scriptural hermeneutic. 3. They are recognized as Reformation bulwarks and cannot be dismissed as “Roman Catholic propaganda” 4. Historically, the English Church appeals to them and their influence can be seen throughout our formularies and prayerbook. 5. It makes Papists and Orthobros shudder.

@@FrSteveMacias oh I'm shuddering Luther There are almost as many sects and beliefs as there are heads; this one will not admit Baptism; that one rejects the Sacrament of the altar; another places another world between the present one and the day of judgment; some teach that Jesus Christ is not God. There is not an individual, however clownish he may be, who does not claim to be inspired by the Holy Ghost, and who does not put forth as prophecies his ravings and dreams. Even Martin Luther saw the inescapable principle of fragmentation and disunity that lies at the heart of sola scriptura. In a letter to Urlich Zwingli, he complained bitterly about the doctrinal anarchy that was even then rampant among Protestants: "If the world lasts, it will be necessary, on account of the differing interpretations of Scripture which now exist, that to preserve the unity of faith, we should receive the [Catholic] councils and decrees and fly to them for refuge."😂😂
